I Need A 2nd Job!

United States
June 3, 2011 6:08pm CST
I'm totally at a loss right now. I have no idea what to do. I could really use a 2nd job, but the economy isn't that great and I am a single mother of 2 kids, so what am I supposed to do? I'm tired of not being about to make ends meet every month. Does anyone have any ideas on how a single mom could make some extra money?

I think working 2 jobs is kind of difficult sometimes. Have you tried asking your work if they could give you more hours? If not maybe you could get a different job that offers a better amount of hours. OR you could also ask for a raise!

I agree with for3verfamous, you see if you look for a second job, you'd have to have additional expenses for gas and of course the travel time could wear you down. On the other hand, if you just get more hours from your job, it'll be more convenient and you wouldn't need to adjust for another type of job. Good luck!

If you enjoy writing online, you may want to take a look at this site. It is a site where you can write brief reviews, at home when you have the time, on a variety of topics and get paid. You can write reviews about things that come across in your day-to-day activities, shopping, movies, restaurants, hotels, travel, and so on. Best wishes to you !

Have you tried to babysit other children of working parents? That is an option. Maybe you could do it at our own home. I personally, earn my money from the internet by working with alot of free sites. It is really good for a second job income.

There is a site called, "Mom's town". Check it out at http://momstown.com/. They give advice on a lot of stuff and even on finding ways to earn money. It's legit.

I'm sorry to hear you're in a bind. I have an idea. Maybe you can look into working at a summer camp. That way you'll have work and maybe your children can go for free or reduced price. Also, another idea is to become a lunch lady. Many moms around here do that.

Well, I can understand that one about having it hard to make ends meet. I am Married, and due to a lot of Medical issues I have that sometimes takes a lot of the extra $$ we have. I have found a company I am with online/offline that I am making a little extra from, and it varies each month how much I can do. But there are the months I struggle due to more higher expenses, so I can relate. Just remember if you are looking for something online do your homework first to see if it will be something right for you.

Can you write a book? No kidding!!! If you have a novel, a cookbook, non fiction, whatever, write it all down, format it, and the self publish it on lulu.com. You can then market it, and get it into book stores. Hubby has three sci-fi novels published, and I have a cookbook out.

I just dropped down to one job. I have been working 2 jobs for almost a year and I was just getting too wiped out. I could probably use a second job still, but it was just too hard on my physically. Summer time is coming up and a lot of fast food places need some part time summer help. You could try that, but like another poster said you might be paying in child care what you are making at the job.

Look hard at your finances first, you may not need a second job. How much do you spend on entertainment and can you cut it down? Do you buy clothing when yours or the kids' are not worn out? Do you spend money on your nails, hair and other personal things that you could do yourself or do without? Do you subscribe to cable TV--dump it! Can you trade down to a simple pay as you go phone and cut down on conversations instead of having a smart phone with a big monthly bill? If you still need money after you cut out all the things you honestly don't need but only want, try a local convenience store, they always need people. But if you're going to be paying for child care you may as well forget a second job--the wages will be eaten up by taxes, child care, transportation, etc. Overhaul your budget first, see what you can cut and you may not need a second job. Good luck!

I totally agree that a 2nd job would be eatin up by daycare and transportation. So, I really can see where a 2nd job would help out in the long run. My finances have already been cut, I have no cable or sattilite, I haven't had that in over 5 years because I couldn't afford it. New clothes for me and the kids, although we need some new clothes, I can't afford those either. Nails, hair, etc? I always do that stuff myself to save money, but it is just that now gas, daycare, lawncare(which I would do myself but I don't have a mower and definitely can't afford to buy one), doctor's bills, and probably more bills coming up soon as my daughter might have to have her tonsils out. It just seems like when it rains, it pours! Thanks so much for your advice! :)

I would suggest doing some of these type of sites online like the social networking ones that you can earn money from. And apply online where ever you can. Plan days out applying and keep after the places you would really like to work for to see if they will hire you. And when ever you are out and see a place that is taking applications APPLY. Read up on interviews so you ace each one. Keep a log of the places where you applied and call them back and keep a updated application with them.
