Wow! My grand mother asked me to teach her how to use computer. I was really a little bit shocked. I told myself it really takes time before she can learn very well in using computer! But wow! UNBELIEVABLE! she is using her facebook now. is it IMAGINABLE to you? I'm actually watching her right now. I don't know what she is looking for? she makes me laugh. LOL! It was just different. would you? Have you imagine your grand mother using computer, surfing on the web, watching videos in youtube, chatting or even playing games? :D

Advanced age doesn't equate with being stupid you know. I think she was very brave to ask you and to do so means she must very much want to learn. The most avid user on myLot is in her 80's...check the myLot population down below and look at the tab "users by rating" and my friend Hatley will be there at the very top.
Your grandmother is not old really either...someone 20 years older maybe but someone in their 70's is not young but neither are they decrepit or past everything. They can still have a keen, sharp mind at that age and I think it's wonderful that she is wanting to learn something new.
My father is living alone and quite well and will be 98 at the end of this month.

No. None of my grandmother's use the computer at all. Trust me, they don't. My grandmother is 74 years old, I think, and she does not use the computer. She has asked me many questions about it though. I think that it is very exciting to see your grandmother learn how to use the computer. There is nothing wrong with learning how to do something for the very first time, at any age.

Yes, it really seems unbelievable that people from older age group still interested to learn new knowledge. Even recently, my grandma had asked me to teach her how to search for olden days movies through Youtube. I just teach her once and now she comes online and searched the movie herself. She said it is interesting and fun to learn computer. I must agreed about it with her...

I think sometimes we get this idea that 'old dogs can't learn new tricks' is more than a cute idiom, that somehow this is universal truth.
In reality, the only old people that can't learn new tricks, are the ones who specifically choose to never learn anything new. Either they have refused to learn anything new for so long that they can no longer do it, or they simply don't want the hassle.
The reality is, old people have a ton to contribute, and can learn new things, and do great things well into their 80s.
Harland "Colonel" Sanders was 65 when he started KFC, and prior to that he was just a cook. All he did was cook chicken at a small service station. By himself he went around to places trying to sign people up for a franchise, a business system he had no experience in whatsoever.
So yes, grand ma can use a computer for sure. Many of my online friends are older people, playing around and having fun online. If you think about it, social skills are the same no matter the age or the medium :)

Learning at any age, computer or anything else, is a good sign for mental health. Learning is a way to keep brain in action to build up new connections between memory cells. Learning at older age prevents Alzheimer. Your grandma is to praise for her activity. Her ability for computer is a sign of good brain health. Help her to keep on like that!

That is excellent! I know others like this which is really encouraging. The guy next door to me has gone 90 and for the past 10 years has had his own computer and knows quite a lot about operating it. He doesn't look much older than about 65, so he is very young at heart. _Derek

Lol!!! At the age of 19 i can see why you think that is remarkable. Surprizingly we older people can learn as much as you younger people can. I remember when i was your age i thought 50 was old, but now i reached and passed that age i see that its not old at all. Seeing that many people live to be 100+ i belive middle age begins around 50. Im now confused as to when old really begins. Anyway thats great she wants to learn the computer. So many older people are scared of it or something. Learning should never end.

Leaning will not be limited to age. In my country here, there are computer classes for elder people who are above 60 year old, they will learn how to use computer from the basic to using the internet. Since computer became a necessity in our daily life, I think everyone should learn how to use computer regardless of age.

Just imagine what people can do with a little bit of will power. It's amazing that your grandmother wanted to learn computers at that age and it is a joy to know that she is now able to do quite a lot on it. I sincerely hope that I am as enthusiastic as she is, when I reach her age, if I ever manage to reach that age.

What ever you do don't teach her because she is old (no offense) and she won't take all that in and get probaly confused. I say hire someone to show her the web life. My advice is to get her an ipod touch or ipad and let her have at it!

I couldn't imagine either of my grandmothers doing that...but then again they passed away some years ago...
My mom's a few years younger than your grandmother, and although she's played video games before, she has no interest in learning the computer. I'd really like her to learn and I think she'd enjoy it immensely, but I just can't seem to convince her to get involved. My father on the other hand has been using a computer for years...long before I ever got one!
Happy mylotting!

My grandmother of approximately the same age does not even know how to use the telephone. She keeps pressing wrong buttons.
If she ever proved to learn at least a bit from computer, I would guess that is judgement day and we wouldn't be having much time on earth anymore.
By the way - using facebook is considered computer knowledge now?

Wow This sounds interesting that your grandma is really showing some interest in Tech well its a good sign that she wants to learn new things at this very age of 76. Well tell you about my grandpa he wants to become hero not like an actor but wearing jeans meeting new people having fun with friends on weekends and iam like my god my grandpa is active.. even iam finding things strange but i have grasped something is that during old age they want to make the fullest use of their lives even from your conclusion it shows the same thing. Old people when they sit home they get bored and want some serious activities so that's why they want to make something interesting. anyways Good luck with your grandma in teaching Computer and learning how to use it. Do it! it will make you as well as your grandma feel better.

That is amazing! I applaud your grandma for having the courage and the work ethic to learn something new at her advanced age.
It is not unbelievable but it is truly amazing.
Normally it would be very difficult to teach people advanced in age new things, especially when it is related to technology. Did you have a hard time teaching your grandma? I applaud your patience, regardless
