Philippines is not a celebrity country so I guess only filipinos read our discussions here. Every resident of this country, citizens or foreigners, experience differently from each other. Each of us is unique, not all of us are alike though some may have gone the same way of life. Some experience easy and comfortable life while others who are less fortunate are really hard up. Now, there are some criminalities and calamities that we heard on the news. It's really frustrating. We wanted to help but can't because of lack of finances. We work in order to live only because no extra savings can be made due to the rampant price increases, etc. We can not blame our fellow filipinos who go abroad to earn and sacrifice their family in order for them to survive. Well, that's our life. Are there some remedies for these problems?

Did you know that sports illustrated did their swimsuit edition in the Philippines in their last edition? The place they did their photo shoot was beautiful. You may check it out on youtube. I have been to the Philippines, and i agree each one of you is different. It may seem you have a general culture, however, each island has its own uniqueness. Each island has its own language or dialogue, and each island has its own difference when it comes to wealth and styles of living.
Though it is obvious that there are places that are considered to be beautiful in the Philippines there are also places that are rather poor. But, this is apparent everywhere you go in the world, as the quote ," the rich gets richer and the poor gets poorer", always hold. Nonetheless everyone in the Philippines are friendly. Perhaps the most friendliest people in the world.
My advice for success, is to work hard, and never give up. Always be first to create and take action, never be the last. You may have heard of this from other people but its true. Study hard, but do not study from the front page of the book to the last. Study outside the book, use the book as a reference to help you succeed further.
Cheers and goodluck.

One remedy I can think of is to alter the mindset of Filipinos who dwell thoughts on how pathetic the Philippines could be and yack, I mean verbalize these thoughts soon as they find venues where audience is not a problem. Point is, calamities is global, and funding in America or the Arab countries or Africa is as difficult... That is why the image of the Philippines had been tarnished. Filipinos who had gone a little higher on the crab climb speak as if this country is hopeless. No matter the accolades brought in by so many well meaning and talented and brave Filipinos, few unkind words eradicates these all.

Hi Eileen,
You have good points there. There's no point in saying that this country is hopeless, I do hope and envision a greater Philippines. But the call for education awareness is crucial. Education to obtain competence not just title or diploma. Statistics of DOLE would say there are a lot of jobs available for Filipinos but why are there still much more unemployed Juan? Because of lack of competence, or not meeting the standards required by the companies.
Another thing, Mantis got a point too, we voted for these people in the government so we can't put our fingers on these government officials. They are appointed by US so to speak. So we have to work our way here, education would be of great help.
Hello Masang,
Yes, it may have caused our poverty, (previous colonization), but it's already a SUNK COST, there's nothing we can do about it, so we have to work out for the better instead of pointing fingers to others. Why not point your fingers to yourself, and say, I shall be the change I want to be. Aight? there's no need to debate or argue about who's to blame, let's just make the change we want to happen.
LET's do our part.

If we review the Philippines History, it's the colonizers or foreigners as one of the causes of poverty in the Philippines. They colonized us for their vested interests. To get and own our natural resources Even, if our government officials are Filipinos but look at the owners of big businesses: Foreigners even fish cages owned by foreigners. It's the Filipinos can save the Philippines not the foreigners. Hard word and self-discipline like that of the Japanese, Chines and Koreans are good examples to follow.

One tough solution to all these is STOPPING GRAFT AND CORRUPTION.

yeah! rampant corruption and lack of discipline of those uneducated ones drive the Philippines downwards. I hope we Filipinos can be tough enough to fight the greed and undisciplined few who wreck our own country. I hope each and every Filipino will help in stopping corruption!

I could see a little help if the new generation will embrace the idea that education is important. There are a lot of unemployed Filipinos now because they don't have enough qualifications or credentials to apply for job posts here. Even on internet there are a lot of opportunities. So we have to be educated. Competence is important. Thus education should be prioritized.
We don't have to go to private schools or universities just to have it, because there are good public schools now.
Though I do agree with you, that some of our fellow Filipinos got out of the country to work, because they are underemployed here or underpaid. So to get what they think they deserve they have to venture on searching for greener pasture, which they think is only found in another country. I salute them, for enduring those sacrifices for their family. I for one, might consider going abroad if I don't get much here in our country.
Let's all start to help this country starting from helping ourselves. Getting what we want by using our gifts and talents. We can't just put our hope on anyone for something, we should take part in the change and goal that we want to see or achieve.
Cheers!

We just can't put the blame on them though. These government officials are elected by the people. Appointed by the sovereign people of this republic. So in the end we have to do our part. And valuing education takes a great role too. Our government have educational programs though, I graduated and obtained my degree using a scholarship granted by the Commission on Higher Education.
It's more of us looking for resources. My main point is, we can go pointing our fingers to others for who's to blame why we suffer like this, or we could start doing something for what we want to happen. Let's make it happen.

Its all true.
Well I guess the only solutions to these problems in our country is just helping each other like tree-planting to avoid calamities.. and about the financial problems, I guess if we Filipinos are just hard-working enough, our country would be rich enough to sustain our needs.. But still, there are a lot of corrupt officials sitting in their position doing nothing but using the money which should be for the people of the Philippines.
There's still no cure about this, but I hope by us Filipinos working and helping together with our president, it is possible to change this!

Hello pahak627. The philippine economy is reeling under the impact of global recession. Poverty in the philippines is a major obstacle to the success of future generations of the Filipino. I think, almost a third of all the population of the philippines lives below the poverty threshold which is due to natural disasters, poor agricultural productivity, high Filipino population growth, and unemployment rate. As the economy sinks further and unemployment continues to grow, a social explosion is building up as working people find it increasingly impossible to make ends meet. Filipinos are people of hope, work ethics and resourcefulness. I am hoping that we can all work to break the cycle of poverty in the Philippines. Honestly, I do not know how but I am still hoping that the government may find ways to ease the problems of filipino people. Good Luck :)

If government officials do the right job and never involve corruption, I surely say our country will rise and will compete to other country who are among the riches country in the world. But, as long as the corruption still there, our country will no hope for any development.

we cannot blame the government officials because they are not there if its not for our vote during the election....
government officials have done nothing wrong...
the Filipino Citizen is wrong....
one wrong move during an election is 6 years of Ramadam to make the belt hold strong

I think, everyone of us has its own share of responsibilities. The Filipino citizen should vote wisely and pay taxes religiously. The elected officials should do their sworn duties. Maybe, if Filipino people will be responsible enough, then we may be able to conquer poverty. :)

Yrah it feels as thoigh we do not have much of a choice. Even if we want tohelp each other out it often boils down to each one of us... We ought to do things our way and we can no longer rely on our government... That is why many go abroad because they lost hope already in our current system

Being OFW who working here in Middle East, I can say that life in our country is terrible if you haven't decent job. Aside from that the political style of our country is not acceptable to other country who is among of the most corrupt in the whole world. It's not easy to work abroad but we did it for the sake of our family and for the future of our children. Frankly speaking I want to stay in the Philippines but the opportunity in our country is less compared to other country.

remedies? these problems have been in existence for decades of years and if there is a solution it has to start first within us..and also change all those who are in the government.

if we the civilians first to start the changes, it will only be lucky for the corrupt Government Officials because their income increases....
the more honest we pay the tax for the government,
the government the more the merrier and glad for our honesty...
the more they get corrupted money came from us....

Well I guess I don't know what the problem is. Why are there no jobs? What policies do you have that are preventing you from growing?
Look at Hong Kong. It's a tiny island with little room, and no natural resources. Yet they have a huge massive economy, and people are very wealthy.
So what about your country is different? What are you doing that is killing your economy?

How can we improve our lives?
The reality is very clear- our government is doing their best to improve our economy, but the sad part is- how many percentage of those good people sitting out there really wants the Philippines to rise up again like what the country is 3 decades ago.
Blame it to the people who wants changes and freedom as they called- and this what they got.
Where are those people now who rejoice after "peoples power" ....do they help the whole country to be a good one?
Whether they admit or not- life before is much much better compared today.
Where Philippines is an exporter country in terms of agricultural-now we import everything to sustain food.
Philippines ranked as number 7 in education - thu we still ranked today as number 2 starting from the lowest.
Yes Philippines is still on top with education literacy compared to other nations-but when it comes to quality education...we lost.
We can never blame other career professionals working overseas- it is for their family's future and it's not having crab mentality or what- they're just being practical.
Who want to see your family dying when you can have greener pasture outside the country right?
Still- our country is much better place to live compared to other countries...check out the net.
have a great weekend ahead.

Philippines is a beautiful country with rich cultures, natural resources and good people. But the problem nowadays based on studies, Most Filipinos are hard up and financially struggling because they mismanage their finances and I'm not exempted to this. Most Filipinos are intelligent but illiterate in terms of financial management. One factor is lifestyle. Many Filipinos are fond of gambling instead of saving money, many have cellphones, many have credit cards, families who have relatives abroad prefer to buy appliances and other unimportant things instead of investing and saving the money. As a result, these people are one day millionaires. Many Filipinos have a lot of celebrations like birthdays, fiestas to the extent of borrowing money just to have this thing. We can still celebrate without spending much. Another thing is that we always see the negative side of the government which result to criticism. One former U.S president said: "Do not ask what the government can do for you but what you can do for the government." Instead of murmuring and criticizing, let's do our part. If all Filipinos are positive thinkers then our life would be better. I believe in the law of attraction. If we always think positive then there is a domino effect: a better life. And we have to save also. If one can save P5.00 a day instead of buying a load everyday then it would make a difference. Instead of riding a jeep, walking is an alternative if it's a walking distance of course. Instead of going to Instant Food chain, we better cook our own food just to save. Instead of using the internet for games and useless things, it's better to have business on line. Instead of going to different malls which at times can tempt us to buy unnecessary things, go to free amusement parks or just stay at home in order to save. Look at the Filipino Chinese, they become richer because they save even a single centavo. We can do all of these if we practice self-discipline. And above all we pray to God to guide us how to manage our finances. God bless the Philippines!

Maybe, another problem we should look into is the self discipline of Filipinos. Really, I am disgusted of the way some of our fellow countrymen behaves. Lowly and uneducated Filipinos drive the whole country down too and it seems there is no motivation for them to pull their weight to a better Philippines. I always realize too that it really is hard to live in our country with all the problems here especially corruption. We can make a difference even in our own little way by being disciplined and behaving the right way. I hope those greedy politicians hears us here.

so sad but true. as of now we can not do anything to relieve our fellow citizens out of poverty here on our country, but perhaps if we, as individuals makes a step to develop our self-discipline and self esteem can contribute a small change to our community, we could actually heal our falling country, by these small changes we made and we will continue to make to ourselves. Instead of looking at the big picture why not try to focus first on a single line until we make-up and rebuild the whole picture.
