I've been living in a rural place with much of a province type of setting. My apartment is situated as being surrounded by grassy areas and farmlands. Whenever I stay at my place, I can't help but get annoyed of all the bugs, nts and mosquitoes all over. Can you guys suggest ways to repel these bugs away? I don't want to use insect sprays because it'll just take away some time I could use for relaxing to waiting for the foul odor to get off. I've also tried chalk solutions, but after sometime the bugs can still walk freely on those chalk traces.
I hope you can help me with this matter. The more environmentally friendly the solution the better. Also It'll be nice to get a practical and easy solution out. The insect bites and "invasion" makes me cringe every now and then.

i live in a rural city. pretty much the convenience of access to commercial needs and wants but in a small town/ rural setting. although we don't have farmlands nearby, it still is greeny in parts.
because of the rainy season, more bugs are abound. we have to keep the area clean with no stagnant waters for mosquitoes to multiply. but that doesn't keep them away much. hehe
ants are pretty persistent. soap-scrubbed floors can keep them away for a time but they do come back. when all else failed, my mom used malathion spray. it does smell so (if ever you would use it) i would suggest that you spray it on the area just before you leave for the day so that when you return, the odor will already be gone.
for mosquitoes, it would be nice to have your doors and windows screened. if not, natural mosquito repellants are neem trees and citronella plants. when the mosquitoes really bug me, i shower and use an anti-microbial soap with neem tree extracts to keep them away. or you can use off-lotion.
often, moths come in thousands also during nights before the rain. as they are attracted to the light, i turn off the lights in the entire house and just keep one outside so they will flock there. it's a feast for the frogs. but as their life span lasts only for a single night, they won't bug you come morning. but you have lots to sweep afterwards.
what other bugs do you have there?

malathion is a liquid solution that is used as an insect spray.
do you have curtains or blinds? to shut off the lights being emitted inside the house or when you are using your laptop while mylotting.
lizards help out by getting their fair share of tiny winged bugs. of course they were not toilet-trained so somebody's got to deal with their poop. lol

A lot of bugs really in different variety. form moths, crickets and the fouls smelling critters. The winged bugs often circles the lights. Afterwhich, they die and the ants are coming after them. I grew tired of sweeping them every time! And yes! those ants are very persistent. I can kill their trail using the chalk but they keep on coming back. Their bites are killing me everytime! I always turn off the lights, however, I work with my laptop and the screen lights attracts them. Annoying while I am myLotting!Haha!
Another concern for me are lizard poops. They drive me crazy! So? all I can do is just always clean up? Maybe the solution to my problem is to get a maid for rent.
By the way, what is malathion?

And I'm just the lucky guy who was tasked to deal with those poop! Haha!
Anyway, I have installed blinds in my windows but I usually open my backdoor for fresh air because it is freaking hot when everything's closed. That's where they enter. My only solution when I am using my laptop is to open the lights outside so the insects will go there. However, it is not a surefire way to repel them because some of the bully insects really wants to annoy me. Tsk,tsk..

That has been our problem before in our house. We like going to sleep with open windows for fresh air to come into the room. However, insects and mosquitoes would come in too. Even geckos would come too.
What we did is have our bedroom windows and door screened. From then on, unwanted insects cannot come in anymore.
In addition, my mother in-law would sometimes burn the leaves outside of our bedroom, when we are at our work. The smoke drives away the insects.

Long time ago, i used a certain brand of gadget that drives mosquitoes and even insects, away. It is plugged to electricity and you will put a small sim-like thing which will emit in the air something that drives the insects away. This will be replaced when it is consumed. But i find it expensive since we use electricity and we have to buy that sim-like thing.
Hence, we resorted to screening the windows and the door to our bedroom.

Can you tell me what gadget is that. I think that suits me better. I am not really staying at my place for the whole day. I usually am staying there during nighttime, so I guess the electricity cost won't be that much.

Yeah! the very same problem as mine! However, I don't own the apartment and I don't really know how long I will stay here. That is why I am hesitating in investing for door screens. Good for you that you got someone able to generate the smoke to drive those insects away. Any other suggestions you can share? Thanks!

I have a little thing that can be plugged on the electricity mains and will repel mosquitoes and insects by generating an ultrasound frequency which is barely audible from humans.
It was not expensive at all, but to tell you the truth, I am not sure that it really works. But I was never the kind of person who will be bitten by insects constantly. I just use it because their buzz and flying around me annoys me much when trying to sleep.
Have a nice day!

I think I've seen that somewhere. Yeah! from Home TV shopping channels. I would love to try that one too. Can you please elaborate on why you think it isn't that effective? Your opinion will help prevent spending on an ineffective stuff. Thanks!

Hi... Ill suggest, always clean your surroundings. Always clean your canals, so that the mosquitoes will not stay there. And you may suggest to your municipal to conduct fogging in your area or barangay so that all mosquitoes will not leave there. Maybe it will not cost higher, maybe its minimal.

Yes, I think good environmental hygiene is what you really need.Be sure to keep left over food properly and throw your garbage daily and keep it covered.Be sure to cleanup food pieces and wrappers anywhere in the house. You can also try fumigation for flying insects.

You two got me! I'm honestly not a cleaning person. Never been meticulous with my place and I know I am messy most of the time. I only do general cleaning when I can't live with my mess anymore. Haha! I believe the ants invade my place due to my mess. But the other bugs, I don't think is due to my mess. They are actually from a nearby farm and grassy area here. Most of the time I'm getting the "invasion" problem when the rain pours. I'm from a rural area and the municipality isn't that dependable here. Can you suggest just the practical ways I can prevent it through my own means only. And thank you for pointing my cleanliness issue. I need that to drive me to clean my place now! Haha!

I think yo need cut off the grasses around you house. If your are concern of insects from the outside, you have to install screens in the windows and doors so the insects cant gain entrance.I also heard some plants which can drive mosquitoes like Marigold,it's a natural insect repellent with a strong scent. You can plant this kind of plants in your back yard.

Thanks for your suggestion ray8500! However, I'm not a fan of mosquito coils. I only use them to light up firecrakers and fireworks during New Year's celebration. Haha! And I also would like to avoid any burns or fire that it may bring. As mylesnarvaez mentioned, my room is a bit messy (just a bit! Haha!) so I wouldn't like to mess with something that burns too. Your idea is still much appreciated!:)

You can try to put door screen and window screen so you can avoid them to come in your house. But always make sure the the screens is always close. Now,there are also insect spray that smells like a perfume. I think you can also use them because it don't smell bad and they said that insect killer like that is not bad for our health. Here in our place there are rackets that you can swing in the air and when the insect get a touch to it they will die because of the electricity that coming from that racket.

Thank you for your response bubuth. However, this discussion of mine is already months old. My problem about those bugs, ants and insects is already history. That was my problem before when I am still living in an apartment. But now, I have changed address back to our home. Now it is more comfortable for me because there are no infesting bugs and insects in here. But yes, part of the reason why there are not much insects in our place is because of the screen. We have screens all over the place for all windows and doors. Yes, I have used that racket that you are referring to. That is the one that twitches any insect that is being drag onto it. Yes, it is quite a nifty way to drive away the bugs.

Hiee Friend Well i too live in a rural place and when rainy season starts there is a whole lot of bugs problem and mosquitoes specially. We have sprays in our house but we dont use it much at odor is disgusting. But now we have brought some environment free sprays with odorless and that works fine, if you are still uncomfortable with sprays then you can install window nets they are the best way to prevent bugs in getting into your house also during evening close your main doors and any windows if they are kept open that's the main source of bugs to get in as they are attracted more towards light. Apart from all these you can purchase the electric shock bug killer which has a neon tube installed in it with a small steel electric outlets It works in such a way that it attracts the bugs to it and then get shock this probably the best in defending bugs. Hope i have helped you thank you.

A nice response here! You realy nailed what I want to hear. I have yet to look for those odorless sprays but I am still doubtful of them due to health concerns. I'm planning on installing window screens maybe. But still, I usually open my back door and windows to let the evening breeze in. Hmmm..maybe that electric shock bug iller will do the trick during my sleeping hours with off lights. I'll check for a good one later. Now maybe you can suggest something when I have my lights on and doors open? Door screens is a bit hefty for my budget. Haha!

If not the insect spray, you can set up one of those electronic mosquito killer, with fluorescent lights, it attracts mosquito closer and electrify them. Also, you can set you a mosquito net on your bed while you are sleeping. I know they are annoying, but since you are living such area, it seems unavoidable during the summer time. It is worse during the hot temperature too.

I not use anything for mosquitoes because they not hurt me because my blood is bitter but they hurt my sweet and danger husband so they use the bat for killing them.

actually i can make them away from when with air only, but that is the easiest way to push them away from us,but when we really need to kill them then we should use a killer chemicals,in the house only mosquito, ants and cockroach stay most of the time.

yes is a great problem of now a days.in the use mosquito net on the window panel it will not pass the mosquito and insects because in evening they enters in house in large volume, use some eco friendly room spray, apart from these tell your maid to use floor cleaner such as (liazol) and (dettol) floor cleaner, these will decrease the entrance of small worm, insects etc.

Well mosquitoes, bugs and insects can be veru irritating and many a times diseases can be spread by them. its very important that necesary preventive measures are taken and taken at the right time. i have often used pesticides to get rid of them and it works most of the time. you could also do a complete pest control of your house and that could also prevent them from coming. pest control needs to be dont on a regular basis considering that you are staying in an area where there could be a lot of bugs. hope you get rid of this problem as soon as possible. good luck..
