Why Do We Always Crave Foods That Are Bad For Us?

I started off with good intentions. I WAS going to eat an apple but I'm sat here munching a small pork pie instead. Why? Because if I don't get in there fast John will eat all 4 of them, therefore depriving me of my..er..share. However, I didn't think to myself, "I know, I'll eat one of my apples..that's MUCH healthier for me" as John doesn't eat fruit, but I ate the pie instead. I feel really guilty about it now. Why are we attracted to the unhealthy options? You know, I never sit here and think, "Mmmm, I quite fancy eating a lettuce or a few sticks of celery, wouldn't that be great?" Instead, I think, "Goodness me, I'd really love some chocolate..especially since it's on offer!" You know what I mean? There are never incentives for (most) of us to eat healthier. It's fine for those that can afford to go in high end stores like Waitrose but for the rest of us..it's an expensive option to eat healthier foods. Do you have cravings for all the wrong foods? How do you cope with them?

Though I am a very healthier eater and routinely watch what I eat, I can honestly say that yes at times I do want all the wrong things, so what I try to do is not buy them at all. It is much easier to get to if it is available as not having it around makes it easier not to be tempted. But do not be so hard on yourself as changing our eating habits must be slow. But we have to concentrate on what we should and should not eat and have some sort of plan and work with it consistently.

The thing is..I stop eating one "bad" food and go onto another one. I shall give you an example. I told John to stop buying me sweets, especially Fruitburst chews which I can become addicted to if I'm let loose on them. He does buy other sweets but not every single day so, obviously, I don't eat as many lol. Now, I have "discovered" a new crisp (chip) and they are called XL Cheese by Golden Wonder. Before this I only ate Walkers but I was noticing how greasy they were..and Golden Wonder's are much better taste-wise. Don't get me wrong, I don't eat loads of packs a day..it's just I thought I was getting somewhere with the sweets and now this with the crisps. I could ask John to stop buying them but he would bring stuff in for himself (like more pies, etc) so I don't like being left out. I realise this is stupid but I've already cut down on the booze (twice a week instead of nightly) so I tend to eat more now. Ironically, the booze is pilsner lager which doesn't have sugar in it. I don't want to turn into an "alky" either. If we went out now and again (at night) I wouldn't have these cravings. I guess it's boredom! Also, if there was decent stuff on the telly I wouldn't eat either as I don't eat when watching it..only when I'm on the computer. What a strange soul I am lol.

Its very good that you live a healthy lifestyle and you tend to eat healthy food and yes if the bad or junk food is available easily we tend to eat more and if is not then we won't eat that junk food.A very good idea.

I've studied nutrition for years and I find that education is probably the best weapon you'll ever have in terms of fighting cravings. What you know - and I don't mean reading a few articles, I mean studying the actual effects on the body, nature of addictions, how diabetes work, behavoural science/how our mind/body respond in today's society, that sort of thing - can and will affect your mindset or attitude towards the unhealthier choices that are available. I find myself automatically thinking of the damage such-and-such would have on the body, which actually helps me to make healthier choices when I purchase something. Refined sugars and white flour/pasta/rice are addictive in nature, and basically empty of nutritional value. Sure they'll fill you up, but the filling feeling won't last as long as whole wheat products (whole wheat flour, whole wheat pasta, and brown rice) would. Sugar basically turns to fat as the body doesn't know what to do with it, hence the fluctuating bloody sugar levels. Natural sugars are fine like molasses, honey, stevia, and fruits. When we give up the junk our bodies will go through withdrawals in the form of cravings. If we continue to make healthy choices in the long run, the body will actually detoxify itself from the chemicals/refined/processed products. Soon, the cravings will lessen. Anyway I'm rambling too much, LOL but as I said education/research on the subject will definitely help you make healthier choices in the long run.

I tend to be a person who craves the savory and creamy foods. My younger sister once commented that the reason our brother and I had a harder time with our weight is because he and I prefer mayonaise type dressings and she loved mustard.I like mayo and tomatoes as a sandwich. She would eat yellow mustard on bread. I think it is the texture that does it for me as well as the taste. Interesting tip I have read recently is to spread hummus where you would like to put mayo. I also am trying and enjoying a wide variety of mustards now.

Perversely, I am hungry now which defeats the object! Nah, seriously though, you guys talk a lot of sense and Masihi..don't think you're rambling..you're not as I was genuinely interested in what you had to say. I can tell you have done a lot of research and that's to be welcomed. Is it true that if we chew and savour our food for longer, that can help too? I tend to be a fairly fast eater (for a woman anyway) but John hoovers up his food and I'm glad he doesn't sit at the table. Actually, maybe he should because he'd put me off mine! My Mum is a very slow eater and she's rarely overweight but there again she has a physical job and she's always on the go at home, otherwise (she says) she can't sleep!! My Dad is overweight but that's booze related. He hardly eats anything at all..has extremely small portions. My brother is at an ideal weight because he has a physical job too. His son is overweight because he's out of work (like me) but DOES want to work. John is annoying in the fact he hardly ever puts weight on although he doesn't have the same sweet tooth I have..mainly savoury I would say. I've also read that sandwiches can be more fattening than take-away burgers due to all the fillings these shops insist on putting in them. I can honestly say I've never bought anything from Subway and I might try to twist John's arm in buying some ace bread (I love those soft croissants with bits on them) and see where it leads! John loves mustard but only English, never French!

I think sometimes if we just stop and think of why we want the "forbidden" food, we can find a good substitute. For instance, when I want chocolate, I'm usually tired and looking for something to make me feel better. When I stop and take a short break, drink a glass of water or get some fresh air, I often quit even thinking about chocolate.

Eat some fruits! (in a non-ridiculous quantity) And yeah, water suppresses appetite and has zero calories! (as long as it's simple water and not sugar flavored :P).

If you are really craving a food you should go ahead and have a really small portion of it. Otherwise you will eat all kinds of other things trying to make yourself quit craving, and then you go ahead and eat the craved item anyway. In your case, though, you were not craving it, you just did not want to be left out. In that case, if you have already eaten an evening meal, you could save the pork pie for another meal in a covered container so John does not see it and eat it. I will admit, though, that an apple, with peanut butter, really satisfies and fills me and energizes me. It is not the first thing I think of though.

I cope with the cravings by just giving in. I've developed a sweet tooth over the past three years or so. When I was a kid, I wasn't allowed to indulge too much. Then as an adult I was just too busy to make the sweets. Now I want 'em and I can make 'em so I do. We finished my latest cake a couple of days ago so now it's time to make something else. I've laid out a recipe for a ricotta pie, got the ingredients and ready to go. I do have some apples in there though so maybe we'll go for the apple crumb pie.

I have just always kept baking supplies/ingredients on hand. I suppose if I had to get them all at one time, it would be expensive. As it is I just have to restock one or two items at a time. I nixed the ricotta pie and mixed up some zucchini bread batter for two loaves. I'll give one of them away. Just got about 30 more minutes to go. When my loaf is gone, I may opt for the pie then. I stay right around 125# year round. Since I was so ill three years ago, I don't seem to have too much trouble staying below 130#. I only eat once or twice a day (not counting a few snacks here and there).

I really need to see a pic of your baking accomplishments! Yes, you hit the nail on the head; I don't have the ingredients to hand which is why it would be expensive to stock up, so to speak. Proper cooks stock up as they go along but I just have the basics and that's it. At least I don't eat TV dinners though..I'm not that bad!

I love apple pie or apple crumble, both of which I have made. Unfortunately, it's very expensive for the ingredients for baking. I know this is a poor excuse on my part but it would take "an arm and a leg" to stock up on stuff I would need..and we end up whizzing through the aisle in the supermarket without picking anything up! Compared to my formative years, I am overweight, no doubts about that. However, it makes no difference if the food is good for me or not, the result is the same..."excess blubber" lol. My husband can eat and drink what he likes but only puts weight on in the winter when he's out boozing whilst playing billiards or snooker..then it all comes off in summer. This is frustrating as my weight seems to stagnate and I'm not getting any fatter but there again, I'm not getting any thinner either! Life's a b*tch lol.

We crave these foods as they are loaded with addictive chemicals. Preservatives and sweeteners, binding agents all have addictive qualities which make us want to buy these products again over and over. I have said it before and I will say it again. Anyone can eat healthy foods cheaply by growing their own foods. There are so many videos showing us how to do this in any climate that there really is no excuse . It just takes a little time and work.

Craving foods and eating them is not so bad if you do not eat too much of the food. I read somewhere that craving for a certain food means you really need that food because the organism asks for it. It's about vitamins or proteins or minerals that are lacking. I use to crave for the so-called forbidden foods but I do not ignore them. I came to the conclusion that little food from all kinds is better than exaggerating in eating only some foods. I usually do not eat salami but when I crave for it I eat about three-four times a year.

Yes, I know what you mean! And "health foods" are expensive, though eating healthily is actually cheaper, as others here have noted. I've brought this up in another of your discussions recently, so I won't bore you with it again. As for your title question, there's an excellent response to it on Dr Suzanne Gudakunst's (American)website. I can verify the research, but I'm not too keen on buying the products she's selling. Essentially, the parasites living in our bowel (mostly from the meat that people eat), secrete a certain chemical that tells our brain that we "need" a certain food at a certain point in time in order to feed these parasites. We think we get what we want, but in reality, they get what they want in order to survive. It's compounded by us making a mental habit of buying & eating these foods. If it were up to me, I'd go to your health professional & see what they can prescribe you to rid yourself of these nasty little creatures. This is not a standard "de-worming" treatment though. There's much more to it. I don't have cravings for certain foods anymore, so I'm not the best authority on how to manage the situation, except to say that if you eliminate the cause, leave the pork pies to John, there will be no need to discipline yourself regarding these cravings, because they simply will not be there anymore.

Are you saying that everybody who eats meat has parasites in their bowel? I'm shocked! So how come veggies don't have them, I don't understand.
• Adelaide, Australia
16 Jun 11
Sorry Janey, should have expanded on that point more. Cultivated vegetables usually have much fewer parasites on them by the time they reach us than does irrigated / non-irrigated grass that sheep, cattle, etc eat - amongst other things. Sheep & cattle in particular eat a lot of grass in their lifetime which contain these parasites. These parasites are concentrated in the animal's flesh & fat that people then eat. Cooking does not kill them or even stop them from breeding, so they arrive on our plates loaded with these parasites in all stages from egg to larvae to adult. Rawbill1 has some lovely YouTube videos of the process demonstrated with before & after cooking close-up videos of bacon. I guess everyone is different, so some who eat meat will have more parasites than others, even some vegans will still have some. Certain herbs will eliminate certain parasites, as will certain fruits & certain vegetables. Other types of fruit & veg will also just encourage the parasites to grow & breed. The slow, but cheaper way to eliminate these parasites is to stick to a well-balanced plant-based diet for as long as possible. Alternatively, there are health centres, resorts & spas popping up all over Europe & the US that hook you up to a machine that flushes them out of you with purified water. I've had it done to me here & it's not very expensive, it's painless & you get to see the results! Hope this helps.

Laying aside that it is an expensive option to eat healthier foods,in real life ,not everyone go out of the way to eat healthier. Most people eat what they like and can get. Here, many people, especially young man, like to go to the sidewalk snack booth. Not that the foods over there are rich in nutrition, but that they are attracted by the taste of foods and aura.

Yes,it happens very often to me to crave for some pork or many other unhealthy types of food, and I think the main explanation lies in the fact that unfortunately the foods which taste really good and make my mouth water are generally those who affect our health the most.I must admit that even if I knew that if I accepted to be a vegetarian I would live more than 100 years I would prefer some juicy meat to the dull vegetarian food from time to time,so I think it's impossible to avoid unhealthy food all the time, but I try not to exaggerate with it,that's how I try to cope with my cravings.

Yes, it's like we only have chips (fries) once a week from our local fish and chip shop, so we don't eat greasy food prepared in the house. Because everything bad is good. You know what I mean? Fried food always tastes better then broiled, grilled, steamed, etc. Because chocolate bars, doughnuts, and cookies are better tasting than fruits and salads. Because beef tastes better than fish. And so on and so forth. Plus, I find that when you are on a diet, the food and dishes are actually more expensive to prepare. Aaargh! :(

Yes, you're right there. Junk food is still way cheaper (and easier to get around here, to be honest) than the healthier options. If the shop round the corner from us started stocking up on apples instead of sweets they'd get no-one in the shop so they stock the junk because people want it.

That's because they are SO GOOD!! Grease, fat, sugar etc...those are all things that make food taste good! Take it out and things don't taste good! You can get used to something supposedly more healthy but no one can deny that it TASTES better with these things in it and if the bad stuff didn't cause you problems, you'd prefer eating it for the flavor! I just don't torture myself and eat in moderation. Plus...you have to stop the craving... or you will eat even more....those celery and carrot sticks aren't going to satisfy your hunger or a craving for something good. So, eat a small "something good" and then add the sticks! Donald Trump said it all recently (I wish he run for president!) when they picked at him for eating his pizza with a fork instead of his hands. "this way, I don't eat the crust and that helps in the calorie department" (paraphrased!)

Hello, Janey. We do it because that's the way life is. If lettuce was a comfort food, nobody would ever get fat. I'm lucky in that I don't do chocolate or pastry, but I do love crisps and Pringles, so I try not to keep them in the house, on the premise that if they're not here, I can't eat them. It's so hot here at the moment that all we're eating is salads and fruit, and I'm swimming twice a day to keep cool. I've lost a few pounds already, and we had visitors last week, so we had several meals out, and far too many drinks. So the advice from Auntie Sandra is - if you want to lose weight, move to Spain!
