VLC will play everything without having to have extra codecs. It will also play streaming TV, video or audio direct from the Internet. Windows and Linux versions are available. This will be the only media program that you will ever need. It is free of charge!

VLC is awesome, and I use it as my fallback.
But i play most things with media player classic. It doesnt use as many resources, so i can play HD movies on older cpu's

Just download a free VLC player. It plays any format including .avi.

I always use BS Player to watch .avi files. I like it because it's easy to use and to put the subtitles. The only problem is that when you download they install a toolbar that is pretty bad and took me a long time to be able to uninstall, so when you download BS Player don't forget to chose to not install the toolbar.
