We have been friends for over fourty years! She three years older than I am. I was school chums with her sister. We know eachother so well. Been through alot together. Her two marriages and my well.....several. She lives in Oklahoma and I live in Idaho. SHe lived here for many years and then moved down there where the rest of her family lives. SHe has a big family-two sisters and four brothers. I loved that because I am an only child. Her son died this year of cancer.
She is so cute! SHe has been nervous about getting a computer. She recently retired and with her retirement money she is paying off bills, bought her a car and surprised me lastnight by getting a computer. Tonight we hung out online for awhile and I helped her navigate around Yahoo messenger and email. She's alot better than she thinks she is.
DO you have a friend or acquaintance that has finally gone online?

I think it's good when one of our friends finally makes the move and manages to get online. I have a couple of older friends who have just about managed to work out how to send an email, and that is fantastic because it means that we can communicate for free instead of having to pay for phone calls every couple of weeks. We can now chat to each other a lot more, and it feels as though we live together rather than the reality which is that we are actually living miles apart and unable to see each other more than a couple of times a year.

With the internet now days people who live clear across the world from one another can be friends and use the web cam and emails to stay in touch. It is great!

I agree. The Internet brings us all so close together now. I have friends all over the US, Canada and Europe and Asia. I love it.

I have an aunt 92 years old. She had never thought of getting a computer although ages ago she had been a secretary and knew about typewriters. But all of a sudden, her oldest son and all his family moved to another country. She would not miss the growing up of her granddaughters nor check on everyone! My cousin explained, she bought herself a computer and learned all there was to know and there she it! I bet she knows more than a lot of us know here! I admire her and I´m glad your friend took that step.

I think that all this new technology is wonderful, as long as we don´t become addicted to them. Sometimes I worry for myself

That's great! She is going to be opened up to a whole world of information.
My grandmother was the one I was so tickled about being online..lol...that has been a few years ago though. It took a little while but she was emailing me like crazy before I knew it.

She is so funny. She says she keeps bumping her cursor and just arrives on Facebook or something. She is very slow at picking things up cause she is afraid. I have been writing instructions out for her on Yahoo and then figure she can go back and read over our conversations if she has trouble. She's picking it up and doesn't realize it. I wish I was there to help her.

No, not now.. but my brother never wanted a computer. We used to have to write snail mail all the time and he said he wasn't interested in getting a computer or anything whenever I asked him about it. I finally got a letter from him one day saying he got a computer and is online. He plays a lot of pool online for money.. he's good at it and has friends all around the world. He has since written me lots of emails about stories of his/our childhood he wanted me to write for the web... he doesn't do the writing himself.. so he has really enjoyed his computer for the last few years.

That is great that your brother has gotten online. Sometimes I think people are really afraid to make that change over.

I think it's great you BFF finally got a computer. She will love having info at her finger tips when she needs it.
I tried for years over ten years to get my mom to use a computer because she was like me alone all the time, no friends around anymore or anything. Being alone can do a lot to you so I tried to get her to have a computer. I would buy it for her. She constantly told me no, that she would never be able to use one.
Now for the past 3 years she has been using the laptop I got her for Mother's Day. She likes her computer and uses it everyday.
I went to her house and spent a week or so and taught her the basics, the rest she has taught herself. She has done really well...I knew she would!
I recommend everyone have a computer even if they don't use it a lot.

My parents are starting to enjoy having a computer and being online
Dad is really enjoying Facebook right now because of Cityville and Mom has found old friends also through Facebook. Dad is using a new desktop, Mom has a new laptop (which I envy so much hahaha). Good for them!
I think it's great that you're friend has accepted the wonders that a computer brings. It's also great that you're helping and encouraging her.
Cheers!

I think it's wonderful your friend is coming online, and she will have a lot of fun and just think of all the new things you both can talk about concerning computers and the internet. In reading about this , it brought back to mind, how I finally got onto the computer/internet myself back in 2000, I learned most of what I needed to get onto the internet and how to access some sites from my youngest two daughters who were in Middle School then. I really had not intended on even getting on the computer, since I had gotten it for them, but the more they got online and I began watching them and asking questions about the different sites and finding out what email was, before I knew it I was online. My knowledge has grown since then, I consider myself still a novice at somethings on the internet but I am not as afraid of making a mistake like I was back then. I guess you could say I was a little bit afraid of it. I am so excited for you and your friend, she will have fun and you know, she will probably end up showing you some new and exciting things about computers and surfing the various sites.
