What would we do without gadgets or tools to make things easier?

When we have colds and allergies hubby and I like to eat fresh pineapple. If you buy it peeled and cored it adds a lot to the price. Yesterday I found a pineapple gadget that cores, peels and slices all at once.I bought a pineapple and I used it today. I will admit I went in and still cut more from the inside of the peel. I use my blender, and food processor, and lots of other things to make life easier. I sometimes have to stop and think about my friends in other countries or people who lived fifty or one hundred years ago and how they managed. Of course, they probably did not have food that was not native imported as much. What tools do you use a lot in your kitchen? Are there some foods you eat that are a challenge to prepare, but you do it anyway. I think we get used to things being too quick and easy.

I prefer a manual can opener. A lot of things come with a pop top now. I have opened a can with needle nose pliers and a screw driver once.

My husband got a really interesting gadget from an infomercial. Ever heard of the "slap chop?" It's great, and he uses it for everything. It makes chopping onions, and all kinds of other things, a breeze. He makes a lot of dishes with chopped food in them, and the thing has saved so much time for him.

I have a spring loaded chopper that I have had for years. I think it is very similar to a slap chop. I will have to look as Wal Mart has lots of the "as seen on TV" things.

I've never heard of one of those things... I'm going to look that up. I use a food processor for chopping things up right now.

Living on my own I've simplified things a lot. I tend not to go to so much trouble preparing meals that I need to use my mixer or food processor. It's a lot of trouble to get them out and set them up too - my kitchen is small and not very user friendly. I use my blender for smoothies when I think of it but otherwise my favourite/most used gadgets are my whisk and a chopping blade that does an excellent job chopping all sorts of veggies just how I want them form pumpkin to cabbage...it's so much easier to use than a knife.

If I was alone I would probably do the same. I have had so many people in and out of my life over the years, I do not think I have ever been alone. When I was first married the first time was the closest, and I did have a much simpler life with fewer gadgets then.

You are on to something there. To be honest, nowadays, if it's not easy to prepare, or takes more then an hour, we usually aren't going to prepare and eat it unless we go out somewhere. It's sad how we've all gotten lazier when it comes to this. I know my grandmother and her mother and her mother before her had to do things by hand, and they enjoyed it. Instead of making made from scratch biscuits, which are very delicious, we can just pop into the store and buy a can that says they're "made from scratch", I'm sorry it's just not the same.
The modern kitchen tools are very good though and can make our life simpler and even healthier, but we can't forget to enjoy those things that may be hard to make but are more delicious and somewhat healthier as well.

I agree. Actually our predecessors considered cooking to be somewhat of an art. My husband's dad was a cook and baker for part of his life, and passed that love down to hubby. He said that we eat with our eyes and our nose long before we ever put any food in our mouth. That is one reason why if we go to a restaurant and we do not smell something delicious we are not likely to enjoy the meal. Many of our moms thought of cooking as an art. I am afraid I do not do that as much as I could.

You're right, after all it was more of an art, you had to do things by hand, you had to kind of "explore" and "experiment" and recipes were more of a hand me down type thing, or something the girls would talk about, now we can just look at cookbooks and that takes the fun out of experimenting I think.
Smell does have a lot to do with it, I know I feel more apt to go back to a place where the atmosphere is enjoyable and the food smells good as well, we admire the food from afar is right, before we actually taste the first bite.

We have a juicer in our kkitchen. We use it to get ginger juice.
Without these gadgets, life would be a little bit harder, imagine you have to spend a couple of hours to extract juice manually. But wth the use of these devices, you just have to put things inside it and wait for just a few minutes and poof in become coco krunch!! haha

Yes, we are spoiled with those gadgets that make our works and life easier. Before cooking rice is a manual work and twice processes but the rice tastes nicer. Now we can just put in the rice together with the water in the pan and it's done. Before to get coconut paste we must do it manually that when we have to get so many pastes our arms become numb. Now with a machine you can do 20 coconuts in a minute.

What do you use coconut paste for? It sounds good, actually. I still bring the water to boil before I put the rice in, and I have started using whole grain, brown rice again, because it is healthier. It takes three times as long to cook, but I prefer it.

I would have to say my mixer, though it broke on Father's Day. (I got until July 22 when the warranty expires to exchange it) I love it because it has a kneading attachment which is much easier than to stand and knead it by hand...

It seemed expensive at the time. It was called an Oster. I know that Sunbeam bought it out. It does take up a lot of space when I have it out, and I got one free from our reuse section that I want to give to my daughter. Originally it had blender, mixer, dough hooks, meat grinder, and a salad maker. Then they came out with an Ice crusher, and I wrote to the company at one time to see if I could purchase one and by then they did not have that, but I was able to get a food processor to go on it.

Hubby and I have a food processor in which we use often however, before we had it, we did all the cutting the old fashioned way, by hand. Another thing we have and use often is the slow cooker. It makes our meals so tasty!! Without it, we'd have to use our oven and on a low temperature for a few hours and then turn it up to get it really hot to be on the safe side. You know, I don't understand how these other countries can be so far behind. I know they are but how? They've been around for thousands of years longer than the USA has been so they should be advanced ahead of us. Sad, isn't it?

Some populations choose to do things more traditionally. I also think that if they do not have a reliable source of affordable electricity then they are not as likely to have as many electrical gadgets.

I don't have a lot of gadgets in my kitchen other than my microwave, toaster and a little chopper--I don't use the chopper much but it's handy when I do. I don't know what I'd do without my cutting board and French knife. What I use the most isn't a gadget but a paring knife that was part of a set we were given when we were married. When we divorce I kept that paring knife and he took the others. I use it for so many things I'd be lost without it.

I have a favorite knife as well. I am sure I could do without some of the gadgets. I have some that are gathering dust that I just had to have.. I do like my Forman grill and also a little sandwich grill I got at the thrift shop. I would rather put my sandwich in there than drag out a big skillet or griddle. Forman grill is wonderful for many meats and I have known people who cooked veggies on there, grilling them and making them flavorful.

I had a sandwich griller, too! It closed down on the sandwich and mashed it a little but it came out crisp and perfect like a toasted cheese sandwich should be..I left it back in the desert when I moved, I really miss it!
I had a little Foreman grill but my son and his friends used it and left it a mess--it was really hard to clean and the plastic drip "pan" was often overfilled and spilled onto the counter. Eww!! Guess who had to clean it up?! I might get one now that I live alone, but it would have to be easier to clean than that one I had 5 years ago!

I thaught the cherry pitter was quite the modern marvel and yet it has been around for hundreds of years. I cut my pineapple by hand. I always wanted a juicer but never got one. I think our main one is the microwave. We didn't have one for along time and having one is really nice. I think we get spoiled. If we didn't have electricity what would we do?

I love to have tools to do my kitchen work. But a pineapple gadget is not one I´d buy. In my super they have the tool and peel it fo free. But I prefer to bring it home without peeling it and I use the peeling and core to make an awesome pineapple juice. You put in water peelings, core, water and sugar and set to boil. Besides the awesome refreshment, the house gets that incredible pineapple smell. YUMMY!!!
I mostly use the blender, a hand blender, the juicer, the water heater and of curse the small electric oven. I use less the coffee maker, the yogurt maker and the grinder.

I will have to try that with my next pineapple. That is why id process my pineapples at home. I can sometimes make the top grow roots. I sure hated to waste the core. Thanks for the idea. I use a hand blender often. I make homemade yogurt in containers in my crock pot.

I so wish people would throw less of ature´s bounty. Do try the pineapple juice: it´s a lot better and cheaper than artificial juices. You know that pineapple is very healthy although I drink the juice because I like it. Place in the pot all that you think it´s not edible, except the upper leaves.

I do use most of the gadgets I have bought. I have consigned my vacuum cleaner to the rubbish bin as my helper finds it convenient to use a broom. The other gadgets that I use are washing machine - very useful, grinder - which I use for masalas that are stored in the fridge for use for protracted periods, water boiler, pressure cooker - indispensable, cake mixer - very useful. I do not use the vegetable shredder which I have still to open!, my mixer comes in handy for certain jobs but not all and may be a few others.
But I will never do away with our grinding stone which can grind stuff that has coconut in it. The electrical grinder comes in handy but nothing like using the grinding stone.
For me no food is a challenge. If I get the urge to prepare it I shall leave no stone unturned to produce it but ofcourse with my helper around.

I like to make things in large quantities and use them. I have not had an opportunity to use a grinding stone, although I have seen them. I have a number of gadgets I inherited from my first husband's grandmother that do a lot of the kitchen jobs that we usually use an electrical appliance for, only these use a hand crank instead. Very hand for things like camping or road trips if we cook.

Firstly you are speaking of my ultimate favorite fruit. There are many fruits that I will not eat but let me at pineapple and love to eat them. My boyfriend will not eat Pineapples so anytime I do buy a whole one I have to eat it several times before it goes bad as I am the only one that will eat it.
I don't use many kitchen gadgets as I do cut and peel almost everything by hand. Would a blender count? lol
I am wanting really bad a bread maker for a long time, but have to wait for now.

I am terrible when it comes to eating fruit. I will not eat anything with skins on them. To eat oranges would be a chore as I sit and peel the skins off. Imagine what it is like for me to eat grapes. lol.. won't do it as it is too much work for me to peel off the skins. My boyfriend says I am nutty like that but have been my whole life.

Ohhh I love fresh pineapple.. there is nothing in the world like it! I've never seen one of those gadgets. I LOVE my garlic peeler. Ok its a rubber tube you stick the garlic in and rub but it works awesome.
I use my cheese grader alot - i had an electric one thats awesome too but hated having to wash all the little bits. The blender is nice for drinks - margaritias, smoothies.
I've seen my sister make her own baby food with her food processor...where she'd have to spend ages mashing and making sure its all the same a food processor makes it smooth and fast.
I'm gonna say the thing id miss the most is...power. It sure makes alot of things in our lives run. ALOT of people would be cold in the winter without power to run the furnaces in their homes!

I really do believe we have got so used to using this tools to help us make eating and preparing food easier. I feel like that is kind of a problem as far as not "working" for our food any more. Before these inventions you had to hunt, clean, and prepare. Now the food is handed to us on a silver platter and I feel we really do not understand how lucky we are. Also like you said about importing foods, they did not have to worry about learning how to eat those foods because they were not available. It's really amazing how much the human race has developed over the years.

I recently read a diet book that basically talks about the fact that people were saying they were "fat" in the 1800's even when they were not, but that we really started having obesity and health problems after about 1950, with the development of TV dinners and boxed and canned meals, and extra fat added and extra sweeteners of all kinds. If I use a tool or gadget I want it to be to improve the quality of my diet. Like peeling a pineapple, which I could never grow here, but it really is healthy. I think things like meat grinders, and slicers help a lot as well.

Pineapples are strange aren't they? How do you know when they are ripe? You can't go thumping them like water melons! The tins have rings, but the whole pineapple has that woody core in the middle which you can only determine it's extent by having a good chew!
As for tools, I have one particularly large knife which only sees service on pineapples - or until I decide to murder someone.
I need some gadget to behead and gut anchovies. The smallest ones are the tastiest but with 120 plus fish in one kilogram, that's a lot of micro-surgeries!

Oh man, I can imagine the anchovies. Hubby likes those. I look for a pineapple that is showing some golden color and the top is still firm and fresh looking and it smells good. The one today was so very good. This device took out the core, but I still gnawed on it a little. And I did still find some good fruit inside the peel. Now that would sound like a real meal, anchovies with fresh pineapple on the side.

Hi GardenGerty , I have been off the site for about a month or so, and it's good to be back, I have to agree with you to a certain extent, while it can be a good thing to have many gadgets that make living in today's world easier and not as hectic or as time consuming as things were a long time ago, I think to it certain degree, it can make a person too hooked on the modern conveniences available today, and not use the skills that we have used, like say peeling a potato or any kind of fruit that has a peel on it, of course there are the peelers that one can use by hand and then there is the old fashioned method of using a knife and peeling it that way. I think hundreds of years ago most of the foods we have and prepare today just may not have been available then, and with cooking gadgets like a turkey roaster, microwaves, crock pots and or slow cookers and many other modern day conveniences, it just does not take as long to prepare foods today. The same thing could be said for the many different gadgets used in the home to keep it clean and organized. I don't know about you, but at times when I watch the infomercials and see new products being introduced and offered for sale, I am amazed at them and wonder, now why didn't I think of that? I also must make another point here as well, with a lot of these new gadgets there are hidden dangers that one must be take into consideration when using any new appliance, or cleaning product. Many people have been lost their lives or been injured by not reading the directions on how to use these new gadgets and or cleaning products so they can be used safely. Sometimes we as consumers pay a high price on the conveniences of these products in more ways than one.

Hi, Rubie Perl. Yes, this pineapple gadget is a hand operated device, but I kept rotating it backwards so it did not work. No written directions, just a picture. That could be another discussion. They say we spend more time cleaning house now than we did fifty years ago, due to having all the gadgets.

I will bet half of that time is spent trying to figure how to use the new product by either reading the instructions or looking at the picture and the other half of the time is spent cleaning up the mess made while using the new product. Good to hear from you GardenGerty

I have gone a little farther with this device, now, or rather with my pineapple. I have a citrus juicer that reams out the inside of the citrus, in fact I have an electric one. I took the end of my pineapple and cupped it down over the center part and juiced that, and then I cut the remaining rind into sections and did the same. I had the juicer out as I was juicing some fresh limes. I made a sugar syrup to sweeten the juice and diluted it for a pineapple limeade, as well as adding cherries and the pineapple core to the pitcher. Voila! Pineapple-cherry--limeade. I also think it would be neat to serve fruit on skewers stood in the shell of the pineapple or a fruit salad chopped up in it.
