Why Do I Find This Penguin Story So Sad?

You may have heard about the Emperor Penguin that got lost and ended up on a New Zealand beach.
He has been given a name..Happy Feet.
But I guess eating sand (mistaking it for snow) is the bit that's upsetting me right now..and the fact he got lost in the first place.
I love Emperor Penguins and I just find it so sad that one of them became stranded like that..all by itself.
I feel the same over stranded whales, dolphins and the like too.
I shall leave you to read the article. At least Happy Feet is alive after his ordeal but I'm not convinced he will ever return to Antarctica..probably some zoo or other will take him in.
Not the same.
He wants to be with his friends.

Yeah I saw that. They said they were going to let nature take its course. Sad.

How is the penguin now? Has he been released?

That's the ideal scenario but I bet the zoo has other ideas..

Now that Happy has been exposed to areas outside of his home habitat, he may have picked up a bug, virus, disease or some such which would decimate his colony were he to be sent back. I can understand taking precautions. So, yes, I think he will not go home again.

If he's given the all clear though I reckon he should.

Yes it is a sad story. I can understand the reasoning for not sending him back home. If he has caught some sort of disease that could wipe out his population it would be horrible. I do think they should try putting him in a similar home environment. Poor penguin.

Sad but so many times MAN will mingle in something he shouldnt. I hate it when I see scientists tag wild animals. They capture them, put them to sleep, take blood, take samples and then they stick a tag to their ears. For a turtle, they glue a receptor onto their heads. Can you imagine the stress those animals go through and all in the name of science and making life better for them? Scuuuuze meeee but thats bull as far as Im concerned. I saw a documentary where they took out a female bear and her babies who were hibernating, only to tag them and then put them back. The female was put to sleep before they took her out, weight her, took some blood, blah blah, then the babies were awake and Im sure the mother could smell humans all over her cubs when she woke up come spring. Why would they do such a thing is beyond me!!
I saw that story on the news about the penguin who got lost. There were people all over the beach to have a look. That must surely stress the poor thing.
Why is it that we're so stupid when it comes to animals? Why cant we respect that they are living creatures who think (I know they do) have feelings and feel pain. You'd think that the way they handle those animals that they dont feel pain......well they do!!
Sometimes Im ashamed to be a human. We need to start acting like it soon.
Oh sorry I got carried away lol.

Don't worry about getting carried away, go right ahead some more lol.
I know what you mean though, we're absolutely useless at looking after animals - especially the wild variety.
Leave them alone I say!

Well they are trying to rehab it at a zoo, then, return it to it's home. Who knows... maybe he'll end up living out his life comfortably in a zoo.

Oh poor Happy Feet! I see they are going to allow Happy Feet a 3 month stay to recover. Poor guy he must have been pretty sad and sick all on his own.
I am glad he was found though and will give him a chance to return soon.

If it were me I'd prefer to die as I'm not in my proper habitat. I don't think he'd be happy in a zoo and I have mixed feelings about him being kept alive for the public's benefit rather than his own.
I guess I like seeing them on nature programmes. I've been brought up on them and Emperor Penguins are one of my favourite animals, in the wild that is.

If they get to rehabilitate him they could either take him back or put him in a wonderful zoo.
I am from Missouri and we have the most awesome Penguin house. The zoo made a wonderful natural habitat for them complete with cold and ice and even the water.
Not all zoos are just some small place to keep an animal penned up.
The St Louis Zoo was introduced by Marlin Perkins who loved animals so much he wanted them all to be in a natural surrounding.
I would rather the penguin to have been found and able to be cared for than just ending up on the beach and die.
I would love to know how he got there so far away.
But there are wonderful zoos. Not all but some that really do respect an animals natural habitat.
I now live in Panama City Beach Florida and we have a very small zoo pay an ridiculous price just to get in, and its so sad to see how these animals are living. I would love to move them all to the St Louis Zoo!
I found the site so anyone that loves penguins can view our wonderful Zoo.

If you ever visit there you will not be able to see everything in one day. I used to divide the zoo up in 4 sections and take my children to a section at a time as they grew up so we could go over and over again and just spend the morning have lunch and then tuck them for their naps. It was awesome.
Anyway hope you will enjoy the link and the videos1

Cheers, I will look at the zoo link sometime. I still think all animals should be in the wild though, wherever possible but you're right, there are some decent zoos out there, unfortunately there aren't enough of them.

I have seen the news about this penguin as well. I think it is currently going to take a third operation and I hope that it will recover after this operation and return to antartica. I heard that an explorer has already promised to take it back to where it comes from if it recovers.

Really? That would be awesome if the explorer could return the little guy back to his homeland.
It's not looking good though is it?

My heart goes out to Happy Feet. How come he was separated from his family? How is the poor penguin recently?I think nobody can follow up on him. I like penguin too, they look like gentlemen that wear swallow-tailed coat and are always calm and unhurried.

As far as I know he's had a third operation so I don't know how much the poor thing can take..he's been through so much as it is.

Oh wow! How sad that this penguin ate sand thinking it was snow. It must have been so thirsty and hungry. I’m glad though that he is now getting the help he needs to recover and maybe get back home after some time in a zoo. I’m happy that the animal has been rescued, but I am like you… I am sad that it went through so much in it’s life and got lost.

I find it difficult to comprehend why there is only one of them. You know what I mean? With whales, etc, their friends end up beaching on occasion as they're concerned for their friend. I do know that Emperor Penguin numbers are down as food is becoming more scarce for them. A horrible thought crossed my mind that he's the only one out of his group to survive.
I wish I could get into his little head to find out what he's been up to!

ARGH! Such a Cute Penguin EATING SAND!?!?!?!? If I have one, I'm gonna cuddle it up.
but it's a total miracle that a penguin is still alive even though it got separated from it's friends. In wildlife, a lone penguin can be a prey you know! Cheers for the medic team for saving the penguin.

I have been following this story and a few hours ago I heard and saw the penguin's progress! I feel really happy for the penguin! Alot of the stuff it ate, like sand and twigs, have been removed! They say the rest will probaly pass out on its own! Happy Feet looked so much better! I hope Happy Feet makes a full recovery! I hope Happy Feet finds a happy home! If it is back in Antartica or in Seaword,in San Diego! I don't think letting Happy Feet back out to sea to swim back to Antartac isn't a good idea! That penguin might not do it! Happy Feet is better being taken home or finding a new home! This is a story I want to keep following! I want to see an happy ending!

I'd much prefer it if he were back in the wild but it would be tough for him to re-adjust, I would think. It's like some whales that beach themselves..go back out only to return to the same beach to do it all over again.

Oh that is indeed a very sad story. Yes, the poor fellow might not be able to go back to his natural habitat but he will live safely in the zoo maybe. However, living safely doesn't mean one can be happy. I can just imagine if i were in the situation of that poor penguin. I would be thankful for having survived but I would surely miss my friends and the rest of my kind.

No-one really knows what they get up to in the oceans as they spend a lot of time in there. I only hope he hasn't got a mate waiting for him in Antarctica. Doesn't bear thinking about.

Awww, that is kind of sad. Animal stories always get me so emotional just because they're so helpless and cute. I feel bad that the penguin got lost, I can't imagine how that even happened. It's sad that he most likely won't go back to his home with his family :( Hopefully when he gets taken in by a zoo he'll be able to fit in and make some friends

There is all this talk of returning him to the wild but I can't see that happening - realistically. It would be a coup for the zoo to keep him as he'd be a major attraction - rather like Knut the Polar Bear in Berlin, I think he was kept..and we all know what happened to him.
