I have a great idea for a new invention for the shower, but I have no idea where to turn. I have done an internet search for help on this topic, but I don't know which companies are reputable that I can trust and what steps to take to try to get my product actually designed, manufactured, and marketed.
Does anyone have any experience or expertise in this area that can offer me assistance with where to go and what steps to take to get started? Thanks in advance!

My only 'expertise' in this area comes from editing a book about it... but at least I can tell you this much:
Write it all down. It's vital to have written records of your idea.
Photocopy it and send it to yourself in the mail: it's fallible, but it's a great way of proving when you had the idea.
Figure out who benefits and what the competitive edge is for people producing your idea - it'll be easier to sell it to them.
Is it fully-developed or just an idea? If it isn't a developed idea, you can't patent it and you'll have to rely on NDAs and other such unreliable methods to keep potential manufacturers quiet.
Once it's developed, make sure you register your intellectual property rights - this will usually involve a patent search to make sure it hasn't already been invented and will cost you money.
That's the very minimum. There's a lot, lot more involved in bringing a new product to market, even if you're not making it yourself: market research, target audience, all that stuff.
If you're serious about the whole process and don't mind spending a bit of money, get a book on the process. The only person who's work I've read is this one: http://www.howtoinvent.info, so I can't recommend any others. I know that one covers everything, from developing the product right up to making and selling it yourself (should you be so inclined).
I'm sure there are plenty more available out there!

Just found another book, though I don't know if it's any good: http://www.lulu.com/product/ebook/the-inventors-pathfinder/5765043?productTrackingContext=search_results/search_shelf/center/3

Thanks for the info. I don't have a lot of capital to invest in the product is the only problem. I will certainly look into the avenues you provided.

The most important thing is probably protecting the idea (and making sure it's actually new!). That way, whoever ends up producing it has to acknowledge that it's yours. The problem is that, as soon as you talk to someone about it, they might go off and design a slightly different version and pretend it's theirs. Difficult.

I dont know where you live but here in Canada, we have a tv show where people like you can come over and ask for money or partnership with Canadian Millionaires. They accept the offer or refuse it. Im sending you a link so you can watch some videos of how it goes. Some people are partners with some of those millionaires and are doing very good with their businesses.

We do have a similar show here called "Shark Tank" but... I was thinking of something a little more feasible than going onto a television show. Thanks for your ideas and input, though! : )

First I will say protect your product...do not trust...period! Now, the only thing I will suggest is like the guy that went to whamo with his invention for a new water car wash thing for children...go to one of the major companies that produces the products like that...and tell them you have an invention and ask if they will sponsor it and pay you for your invention. Make sure you get money for each one that sells or something like that...or a hefty lump sum to begin with. Don't get cheated by them saying well they have to do all the rearch and the patents and ....etc. They have people to do that and really it's not a big deal. They can pay you what your invention is worth.

Sorry I don't but I would suggest going to the store and looking at the products they have, the one brand that pops out at you in that "darn I should have thought of them / they are well known" way, you should take the number for and call them. They may be able to direct you in the right direction.

That's definitely something to think about. Thanks for your suggestion!
