Sugar is present in nearly everything. It is hard to imagine soft drinks without sugar. It is hard to imagine sugar disappear from cakes and ice-cream. Many of us add sugar to our coffee or tea without a second thought. Even many fruit juices contain sugar. What if you have to do without sugar for a week? That means eating and drinking items that have no sugar at all. Can you still enjoy life? Do you think you can live without sugar?

I rarely consume sugar by the way I eat. So in totality I use very little sugar. If it didn't exist I would not use it at all. I may indulge in something that contains sugar a few times a year when visiting or at a wedding or something like that. Sugar is addictive and hard to do without.

It probably starts with mothers adding sugar to baby foods and once addicted it is so hard to do without sugar. Then there is the sugary desert at the end of every meal. No wonder so many children are addicted and hyperactive.

Hi scheng1! So true about the sugar situations you state! Last night something was brought to my attention which surprised even me. A friend read the ingredients on a box of salt and one of the ingredients in salt was sugar!

Hi 1hopefulman, yes, agree that sugar is very addictive. It is hard to know that we have sugar addiction, yet when we do not sugar in most of our food products, we do not like the new taste. I think if all the cakes, ice cream and chocolate do not contain sugar, sales of these products will drop drastically. Everyone is so used to sugar hidden in food stuff. I think those with diabetes have to go out of their way to get food without sugar, or just take natural fruits with natural sugar content.

Maybe some can, maybe some cannot. For me, I can't since sugar tastes sweet. I like sweet flavor and would be adding sugar in drinks like tea and juice.

Hi Alphenor, same here, while there are some things I can do without sugar, I cannot imagine tea without milk and sugar, or ice cream without sugar. Even though I know that we eat way too much sugar, but it is hard to imagine life without it. I think most of us will suffer terribly if sugar price increases so much that we have to cut down on it.

In fact, the price of sugar had increased in my country since from last year, so i try not to use too much sugar. But, i discovered that the drink and food that i consumed without much sugar would taste plain and not delicious at all.

Well yes, I do think I can live a week without sugar if only I cut out all the sweet items from my diet. My daily tea would be the only sufferer…I tried tea without sugar (for health reasons) and spat out after the first sip…after that, to hell with health, I had to have my tea with enough sugar in it. So if I leave out the daily ritual of tea, then there’s few other food that is absolutely necessary and has sugar in it…I’ll just stick to the normal diet of rice and pulses and veggies and fish…none of these require any sugar while cooking. Even breakfast of bread and eggs and fruits require no sugar in it. However, I do know that I would not survive without salt.

haha, Sudiptacallingu, you have a nice lesson about the different types of sugar! I think most of us only know sugar in the form of table sugar, but forget that we take in sugar all the time from fruits, nuts, potato, rice and bread. Even honey is basically sugar with other minerals. I think you have enough sugar from your simple diet. The table sugar is just added to let you enjoy your tea. You may like to drink Chinese tea instead, since nobody adds sugar to Chinese tea. If the Chinese tea comes with jasmine flowers in it, the fragrance of jasmine is enough to stop you from thinking about sugar.

I guess my friend you forgot that all foods have simple sugars, from the very fruits and veggies we eat, even rice has simple sugar because it is carbohydrates.. you must have forgotten about lactose, fructose and other types of sugar content in the food that you eat.

Since the price of sugar had gone high in my country, i had tried to cut-down the usage of sugar in my daily routine. But, it makes my food and drinks tastes not delicious and looks dull. So, i think we still need to add sugar to our food. Even to a cup of tea, i still need to add some sugar to it. I think i can't drink my cup of tea without sugar in it. Seems like, i can't live a day without sugar in my life, too.

Yes, you are right. Actually, the manufacturer adds more sugar is to preserve and make them last longer. My mother ever tried making pineapple tart with added little sugar but guess what? It didn't last long and tastes not really delicious.

Hi Myfb2009, oh dear, I cannot imagine pineapple tarts with little sugar. I think we are very used to pineapple tarts with rich butter taste and sugar. Guess what! The only time when I was in Genting, just a couple of weeks ago, they started selling moon cakes already. I tried the moon cake with less sugar, but it is still very sweet. I do love to eat moon cake, even if I do not take it every day. I have booked another trip to Genting. I think I will buy more moon cakes, since there is still a twenty per cent discount if we buy now.

Hi Myfb, you will feel even more miserable if all the cookies and jams contain less sugar. I think during the festive season, most of us take in too much sugar. I like to eat pineapple tarts, even though I know that the sugar content is way too high. The sugar does not come just from the pineapple. The manufacturer also adds in too much sugar to the tarts to make them taste better and last longer.

Sugar ,sweetness .If that is not there then only we would know what is its importance. It can be sweetness in life ,it can be sweetness in the food. Yes see we have some quality of sugar in everything we take ,there is salt also .If we try avoiding the sugar which we purchase from the shops or avoid the sugary food ,then also i think it is not that hard because we can make our selves with the hot hot and spicy things.,which are of many varieties. If we make our selves used to somethings then we feel that is only tasty. Coming to the sweets , icecreams or cold drinks we can not imagine them without sweetness.Choclates look so horrible without sugar it will taste just as if we are eating only bitter things and soemthing that is really hard to taste. Take everything but in limit. Then only we can enjoy everthing .

Hi Umabharti, even many spicy food have some sugar in it. Over here, some rice items have sugar too. Even some curry dishes contain added sugar. I cannot imagine how anyone who buy food from the stalls or the supermarket can get away with food items without sugar. Many people add sugar to the jelly or soup to make it sweeter and nicer. It is just part of life to have sugar in nearly everything. I think if we eat more natural fruits and nuts, we take in sugar in the natural food instead of table sugar.

Sugar is a product from sugarcane. As always we can not take out the sugarcan juice and add to all the items we make the manufacturers done the help of producing sugar for all of us. Sweets are made from the sugar and jaggery. So are there any sweets which are not made with these items.

Hi Umabharti, in some countries, they make sugar from other sources, not sugarcane. Just too bad that the manufacturers do not add those vitamins and minerals from sugarcane when they extract the sugar. As it is, sugar is just calories without other useful vitamins and minerals. I have not drank sugarcane juice for a long time. Talking about sugarcane, and I have an urge to drink sugarcane juice.

Hi Simplyd, yes, I agree. Those pastries and cakes are especially nice when we eat then during the festive seasons. Just too bad that the side effects of having too much sugar include weight gain. I think many people do hot even realize how sugar is hidden in cakes, fruit juice, chocolate, muffins, and other desserts. If only there is little side effect of sugar, then we would definitely enjoy life more.

Hi Simplyd, yes, that is true. The best is to drink some water before we never eat anything, so that we would feel full and eat less. Fortunately there are many choices for breakfast that are better than cakes and muffins. The only time when moderation is hard to practice is during the festive seasons. That is the time when all our favorite food contain too much sugar. For us Chinese, nearly all festive occasions means added sugar. The Mid Autumn Festival is coming, and moon cake is one of the items with too much sugar. Most of us enjoy moon cake with Chinese tea. In a sense, that is not too bad a combination.

It's up to us to moderate ourselves in eating those cakes and pastries. We know it's bad side effects so we should be cautious in not eating them too often. Also, after eating them, we should see to it that we also drink lots of water, to down it.

No I could not because there is sugar in fruit. I take my coffee and tea without adding anything. But I will also have chocolates and even the dark chocolate contain sugar. That also means for a week, I would not only have to avoid candies and treats like brownies and squares that I only have on special occasions, but also avoid eating berries, strawberries, blueberries that I love. So it would not be just cane sugar or beet sugar or the frutcose glucose that is bad for you and makes you gain so much weight around your belly, but the normal fruits that are good for you.
@suspenseful (40193)

You did not state that. You just said without sugar. If you had said without cane sugar, that wold be understandable, and then you also have to state without beet sugar because here in Canada, much of our white sugar is beet sugar. I think if you had excluded the sugar found in fruit as remaining in fruit, then you would have made it clearer.

haha Suspenseful, if I were to use Sucrose, Glucose, and other names for sugar, I think nobody will comment on this discussion anymore. It is funny how everyone knows about sugar, yet they do not really know the sources of sugar. I mean, most of us know about table sugar, which is mostly cane sugar, but not many people know that corn syrup is actually sugar as well.

Hi Suspenseful, actually the sugar added to coffee is quite different from the sugar in fruits and nuts. It is very different from the sugar in honey or molasses too. I think it is hard enough to get rid of added sugar, such as those white sugar from the processed food. Actually we can still survive without taking in the cane sugar, but I doubt we will enjoy life as much.

Hi Yugasini, yes, that is true. Hi, Since this is biological need and even though we do not take sugar in its raw form body gets supplied from the food we eat. Since sugar is an important element for our existence and if we stop eating all possible foods/vegetable/fruits that contain sugar our body would start revolting and the possible result is we die of disease cause by lack of sugar in our body.

Hi krajibg, sugar is known as an empty calorie food. That means sugar has only calorie, and nothing else. You cannot get even some vitamins from the sugar, or any other important minerals. The only thing that sugar does for us, is to provide energy. If we do not use up all the energy, then we get fat. I think in culture where people take in too much sugar, and do not exercise enough, you will notice the percentage of overweight people. We are not even talking about other side effects of over consumption of sugar from our diet.
@scheng1 (24649)

10 Jul 11
Hi Krajibg, actually there are different types of sugar in natural form. The sugar in fruits and nuts in the natural form is different from the sugar we added to coffee and tea. I think our society has relied too much on sugar to sweeten many products. it is hard to imagine a world without added sugar. Imagine the cookies for festivals without sugar, or jellies without sugar. I think the relative low cost of sugar is one factor. That is why so many people have weight problem.

I will be hypocrite if I said no because all of the food that I intake contains simple sugar. I am Asian and we eat rice everyday, rice contains simple sugar because it has carbohydrate. Even if you eat pasta, there is still a small amount of sugar in it. From Simple carbohydrates ,Glucose, Monosaccharides, Disaccharides, Fructose, Galactose, Lactose, Maltose and sucrose. So meaning fruits and veggies have contents of sugar, so no matter what we do these sugar exists in our food although they have certain levels and people should know how to limit also their intake of sugar particularly if they are diabetic.

Hi RBBantiles, it is very encouraging to hear that. You must have a lot of determination to succeed in healthy eating. i think most people do not even want to give up sugar, even though that is the best way to lose weight. I think some people are even addicted to sugar. If they do not have enough sugar from processed food or beverages, they would feel moody and snappy. I wonder at your struggle in the beginning of your new diet. What is the motivating factor?

13 Jul 11
Hi RBBantiles, sugar alternatives are out for me. I do not trust those sugar alternatives, since these are relatively new products. It would take years for the side effects to surface. At least I know the danger of excess sugar in our body. I think I can do without some processed food loaded with sugar or reduce the consumption. Most of my daily intake include natural food without adding table sugar. I think I have not reached a stage where I craved for sugar.
• Philippines
13 Jul 11
I'm blessed with a curiosity for things, an adventurous taste, and a stomach that is not easily vanquished. Because of the drive to know, I got to find out about sugar, its function in the body, and in what other foods and forms it can be found. So, those other forms I also take to substitute for my sugar intake taken in the form of sweets or sweetness. Taking sugar alternatives begins as an experiment, then becomes taste-forming and sometimes a habit. While doing so, you have left sugar aside, if not behind, which is good for health.

Hi Humanicon, it is nearly impossible to exclude all forms of sugar. Nearly all the natural food have certain sugar. Even if we exclude fruits, we still have simple sugar in the form of carbohydrates. However, most people understand sugar as the white table sugar we add to enhance the taste of cakes, tea, and coffee. Not many people will associate that with the sugar in carrots, potato, honey and rice. Even then, it is hard to avoid table sugar. This particular product is present nearly everywhere.

Actually when I mention that fruit juice contains sugar, I have in mind the carton of fruit juice on sale in the supermarket. if you check the ingredients, you would notice that sugar is added to enhance the taste. there is a things that many can use instead of sugar: honey. honey is healthy , and one can make sweet food with it. I am used to mix some honey with pure tahini (tahini is like a minced sesame with sesame oil) did you try mixing some honey with cocoa ? (cocoa is a brown powder that all the chocolate stuff is based on , but it's not a chocolate) hey , and what about all the fruits that are sweet ? did you try freezing a peeled banana in the freezer for an hour ? it comes out like an ice-cream. man , I think we can have a better life without sugar.

Hi Stringer, yes, there are many natural food which contain different kind of sugar, not just the white table sugar. While I like honey, I do not fancy adding honey to coffee to sweeten it. I have cooked a mixture of different beans, and then add honey for taste. It is very nice to have a healthy dessert. Having said that, it is nearly impossible to avoid table sugar. The only way is to go all the way out to avoid it, and stop buying things with sugar in it, such as cakes, chocolate, ice cream and others.

Does that mean no honey? D: I try to keep sugar to a minimum, since I'm trying to lose a bit of weight (I have successfully cut down my soda intake; I was up to two cans a day; now I can go without one for close to a month! Yaaaay). I still enjoy sweet tea now and then, I've switched to unsweetened green tea (I can't drink unsweetened black tea). But no sugar /at all/? I don't know if I could manage that. I enjoy sweet things too much! I'd probably be down to my green tea and water for drinks. It's tough for me t think of something sugar free to eat right off the top of my head. Anyway, I wonder if you were counting artificial sweeteners as well when you said "sugar". I may despise aspartame, but that doesn't mean other people don't. *Shrug* Sugar is something that we take for granted, I think. I can't imagine life sugar-free. Since natural fruits contain sugar, it's generally ill-advised to cut sugar out entirely. However, the confectionery goods are easy to cut out, when it is required in life. Soft drinks do come in diet, which once you get used to them aren't so bad. One could learn to enjoy more savory flavors more often, and for a "sweet tooth" could resort to products made with substitute sweetener. I could live without sugar quite easily.

From what I have read: Sugar is actually one of the most essential nutrients in our body. It is absolutely the only fuel that the body recognizes. If you were somehow able to completely eliminate sugar from your diet then you would stop, like a car that ran out of gas. Ever hear of hypoglycemia? The problem is figuring out what kind of sugars to eat and which ones to avoid.
