it says that the activity is required?
what is 'execused absence'

It means that if you do this activity, it's going to count toward your absentee record, i.e., you'll be counted absent for the time you're doing "this activity".
An excused absence is when you aren't in school, but you have a recorded reason: a doctor's appointment, a field trip, things of that kind.
The activity is completely optional; if you do the activity, though, you won't be excused from your classes.
