Man may be evicted from apartment due to his autism

I was watching cleveland news and they were talking about how a man with autism hums all the time. He was given a warning by police and told that he may be evicted because he hums all the time. Psychological tests prove that the man does not even know he is humming. I would think that an advocate should be appointed to this man because there is a law about throwing people out of their apartments because of mental illness or developmental delays. This type of thing is just wrong.

I babysit for a little boy with autism and he is such a great boy! Yeah he does things that other kids don't do but he is so sweet and cute. This makes me mad because I think of him and what if that was him. There is nothing wrong with humming and he probably doesn't know he's doing that. It's so mean and unfair!

It is mean and unfair. They said that the other tenants are complaining. My son has PDD-NOS and a really bad obsession with badges. We have to distract him because otherwise he will do nothing but play with badges all day. He will draw them and cut them out, find plastic ones and put them on his clothes and even stick all his stickers on something as a badge. We sent him to a camp for kids with autism and the second day there they told us he got in trouble for taking all the other kids badges from them. I said "oops we forgot to tell you about the badges."

Personally this is Wrong, and worth suing and fighting for. Does the landlord or manager of those apts not know the rules? And for something as small as humming? I have lived places and had to put up with way worse than that with nothing ever really being done. Sounds like the landlord just has something in for this person. You would think if he has a Caseworker they would be in on the scene and fighting for him and this situation as well.

Perhaps they could find him a more suitable placement. I understand that the law prohibits discrimination because of mental capability, but he is actually disturbing others or they would not be evicting him. They can evict people with schizophrenia if they are loud and disruptive and the police have to be called. It is a shame, and I hope he does get help.

They said his humming is disturbing the peace because the neighbors are complaining. Someone should step in and help this man.

And how loud is this humming that it's disturbing so many people? When I hum it's rare and I'm pretty quiet. I think as long as he is not hurting anyone and or disturbing them in a rude way or via a means he can control that's one thing but this is quite the another.

How terrible for this to happen to this man. He has medical records to substantiate and wonder if he can sue if this does indeed happen. I hope he can get some family support to fight this for him.
Yes I too feel this is wrong, how bad can humming be. I am sure he can't be doing it from the top of his lungs. Wow how heartless of the landlord.

I thought the same thing. How loud could humming be? I have lived in apartments and had much worse neighbors that yell and argue all the time and you could hear it through the walls. It just seems like discrimination.

hi linda,
i find that too harsh for the landlord to evict him. yes and wrong. there has to be some humanitarian gestures for people with handicap.
i know it is a bad thing to wish, but i wish they have that kind of illness too for them to know what it is like.
