Were you born too Late?

There's a poem like this, called "Miniver Cheevy". I'd link to it, but I can't paste, so if you're interested, google it! It's a very good poem. Miniver grew up enthralled by the days of old--knights and chivalry and damsels in distress. He felt out of place in his time, and so he shut himself up in his fantasy and drank his way back to Camelot. While we (hopefully) don't drink ourselves back to another era, some of us may feel as if we're born a bit too late. We love the romance, or the aesthetic, or the look of another decade or era--we're kind of stuck in it. I'd call myself a child of the fifties for the most part--while I love other times, I get giddy when I hear that good old rock and roll, I collect 50's prints, and I plan to remodel my room in 1950's high style. I love the atomic age! (I also love the 1800's--the pure science and Victorian chic and /Nikola Tesla/. :D) So, how about you? Were you born to late? Which decade or era can you see yourself in?

I wish I had been born in the 19th century - that was a time of class and exciting change. The railroad, the engine, the telegraph and so many other inventions were just being started then! It was also a simpler time. They weren't concerned about having the latest gadgets. It was also a time where life was more predictable - things didn't change everyday and society was not so open to the radical wildness that it is willing to accept today. I wouldn't want to be born any later though, because of disease and the hard work needed just to survive. I love the gracefulness of the Victorian era - the blue and white china, the tea, the dresses, the fox hunts, the horse and carriage rides, and even the steam boats and trains! There was also two options available during that era - civilization or the adventurous frontier. Today we only have boring civilization. This was also the era before weapons of mass destruction, like nuclear bombs. Also news was slower back then so you were not bombarded with negative headlines on all sides. I am critical of technology today. For the most part I don't like it and its effects, and in some cases I am a bit scared of it. I so wish I could have lived before the time of automation and complicated internationalism. I want to live in a time where books where books and people had real friendships without a screen between them! Where's a time machine when ya need one?

It was also the time of Nikola Tesla, my favorite inventor ever. :D I love the 19th century as well. There was a whole lot in that day and age that we've lost. Life may have been harder back then for a lot of people, but I might like to have lived in the Victorian age. Like you said--a time when books were books.

It may be idealism - but the past is so charming - 1800's or 1950's. And you are right - it seems to be that the people who lived through the eras we idolize did not consider them so fun. I bet someone somewhere in the 22nd century will long for our time. "Thing's were so simple then - they only had to deal with those primitive touch screens and 2D internet!"

MyLot's a good argument for living in today's age! Glad you have fun with your mom; enjoy that.

I don't feel it is correct to think that we are either born too late or born too early because this is something which is not under anybodies control. Moreover if you believe in incarnation then all these just don't matter. Off course i do sometimes feel that i should born during a certain period.

*facepalm.jpg* Apologies if this sounds blunt or scathing to you, but please don't reply to questions you do not intend to answer directly.Nothing I said had a single thing to do with incarnation. I simply asked if there was an era of time that mylotters liked better than their own--a certain aesthetic or "vogue" that suited them better than today's. I also happened to share what I feel is a very good piece of literature. That being said--I know that when we're born isn't under our control, nor do I think it should be.

I wouldn't say that I was born late. I like the era when I was born as there were so much memories in it that I cherish. But if I am able to go back in time, I would love to visit the time when my parents were young that time and while they were courting. Just like in the movie "Back To The Future".
