Hello fellow mylotters. I took a walk today, but it was very hot. When I returned from my destination I kept walking because I wanted to check out a store I thought was closer for some reason. I walked a total of 2 1/2-3 miles only, and after the first mile I had been sitting in a restaurant drinking coffee and water for awhile. After I was home for about 1/2 hr in the yard, I began feeling dizzy, disorientated and nauseated. To tell the truth I was a bit worried it might be a little more serious than just too much heat.
After I drank some water and juice, I took a shower and laid down for a little while in the air conditioning . I started to feel better after an hour or so, and within 2 hrs I could eat something. I went outside to smoke and after a little while in the heat I started to feel weird again.
Have you ever got sick from the heat? How did you cope with it.

Thank you yoyo. I did read the discussion. It is amazing how quickly this can happen. When I left the restaurant, I only walked about 1/2 hr. This is how quickly someone can become ill.

Yeah, I know. Since I'm not as young as I was once, I can't stay out in the heat more than 15 minutes or so. Depends upon what condition our bodies are in as to how we will react. I'm not in such good shape anymore. Heat stress and heat stroke can sneak up and really do a job on us.

It is amazing how our bodies change. I used to get so overheated and sweaty I could not stand to be in the heat. Then I went to a gym and worked out very hard and it somehow changed my body chemistry; I don't get so unpleasant in the heat. Now I like being outdoors in the sun and enjoying my garden. Though I have noticed this year the heat is getting to me more than it did last year.

I think I've been close to heatstroke but never actually had it. I just went into a cool room and drank some juice and ate something.

I am glad you were able to get out of the sun so quickly and get hydrated. That is very important. It is good you did not get sick!

To keep properly hydrated in this weather stay away from Coffee and other caffeine drinks, including Gatorade. Plain water is the best hydrating fluid that one can get.
If you can you should quit smoking as it decreases the amount of O2 your heart gets and causes it to work harder.
Heat stroke and other heat related illness are nothing to fool around with. You did right by getting to the shade and AC as soon as you did.

It was beginning to get a bit scary, with everything moving around and the nausea. I knew I was in trouble! Thank you very much for the advice.

Are you not having heart or lungs health conditions? Is it the first time you feel that way?Well, too much heat especially if you're not rehydrating yourself may cause heat exhaustion to heatstroke. If you're suffering from heat exhaustion, you may feel nauseated, headache, weakness, dizziness and may vomit. If you have a heat stroke you will have a high fever, difficulty breathing, hallucinations, seizure or coma.Maybe what you feel is just heat exhaustion. We really need to drink more fluids if we are doing rigorous activities under the hot sun.Do not also skip the possibility, that you may have a heart attack on that time because it almost have the same symptoms with heat exhaustion. As you mention that you feel ill again after you smoke which is one of the risk factors of heart and lungs health conditions, plus it was triggered by increased physical activity. It's better if you decrease or much better quit smoking.Try to have a complete medical check up as possible.

That I am aware of, I am healthy except for cholesterol being a bit high. I guess I just had heat exhaustion, not a heat stroke. With a bad heart, wouldn't the symptoms be more consistent? I was getting worried that was happening, and after I had a warm shower I felt better so I figured it wasn't a heart attack.

I get migraine headaches even for a very, very short while under the sun. The sun's heat is not to be taken for granted nowadays. I just heard of a friend who just had an attack because of a heatstroke that he was actually taken to the hospital. When I go out, I make sure I am protected. I don't just put on sunscreen on my face. I use an umbrella no matter how near I am heading for. Drinking lots of water especially before and while you are out is very important because dehydration is one of the main causes of heatstroke. So next time shield yourself from the direct heat.

O my, are you allergic to the sun? I hope you do continue to be careful when you are out. How is your friend? I hope he is ok.

I have had this happen t me often enough to know that you were very close. Another big problem is the ozone. If it is high that day (you can check you local weather services online for the readout) you need to stay in or at the very least do all of your out side stuff before 11am. after that the ozone just gets worse. YOu will get sick to the stomache a headache have to go to the bathroom get dizzy black outs and more. I hate it. It gets better when it rains as the rain washes it away and replaces the air with good ions. Tree also help quite a bit with the way you feel during the heat. Pine trees put off the most.

Thank you. It is hard to keep out of the heat of the sun, isn't it? I love my garden, and I love getting tan. It is killing me now that I cannot walk because of the heat. Hopefully it will cool off soon. We are due for about a week of high temperatures. The overall heat index has us at over 100 degrees Fahrenheit each day during this heatwave. The air is still, there is no breeze so it makes it seem hotter.

rosegardens oh yes you had heatstroke and you must now stay out of the sun and drink plenty of fluids to rehydrate yourself. stay where its cooler and do not go outside til the next day, and of please try to stop smoking as smoking kills the heart muscle eventually ask any cardiologist as he or she will tell you the same. I watched my hubby die and could do nothing to help him he had destroyed all b ut 20 percent of his heart. he had only hours left to live. do not be a victim like that please.

Thank you. Today is hotter than it was yesterday, and I am wondering if I should walk for my Avon route. It is not far and if I keep hydrated and eat I should be ok. Terribly thirsty today though.

Quit smoking...you do all sort of exercise and Smoke. So what is the use of you hard work. Your body will not able to take all this at once. one way your body is trying to get stronger, other side you yourself smoking and chocking. Please think of your self. Quit Smoking.

I could have ended up in the hospital from heat stress and possibly developed heat stroke. I was very close to getting very very sick. My internal organs were beginning to overheat. Yet the only thing you have to say is in regards to smoking.

Hi Rosegardens, I am sorry to hear about the heat stroke. It does happened to me as well. Here at our place summer is terrible and we had severe power cuts, so inside home we would have high temperatures, so when i come out of home, the sudden rise in body temperature causes me dizziness and feel of vomitation.
I avoid myself walking on hot summer, rather i would cool my body temperature take a cold shower twice a day.

Goodness, that is awful that your power company does not fix the overload so you can be comfortable in your home. Drink lots of fluids and put a wet rag around your neck to help keep you cool.

Thank you. Gatoraid or something similar is very good in moderation.
