I teach dance, since 1973. I am a good teacher and take pride, as a teacher, parent and grandparent, of being a good and fair teacher. These parents, and this teacher are horrible!! I cannot believe that Lifetime TV put this trash on tv and that there are actually people like this out in the world. That is my take on it. Tell me what you think. http://www.mylifetime.com/shows/dance-moms/

I hope it is just to put them to shame and bring to attention how some of us out here in the population are very bad influences and should be sanctioned as any body with their heads on straight would do. Why on earth would they allow this. A disturbing topic.

Very disturbing and it puts the rest of us dance teachers in a bad light. Also, those moms, though maybe they are not that bad in real life, but made to look that way, also hurts the dance business, where most of us are nice.

I caught some of this show a couple of times. I was horrified. I cannot believe that this is seen as okay. I mean some of those kids are physically ill and they are being pushed beyond even what is expected of athletes. I wonder when these women see themselves on TV if they will feel any kind of regret. It's sickening.

A lot of it is not real, and scripted, because I know people who know those people, but still, even if it is not all true, why present people in such a manner?

hi nanajanet I watched about half of that and I got so mad and disgusted I had to quit and turn it off. those moms are idiots and that teacher is a fat nasty tempered slob. what they are doing to those children is horrid, horrible, the one scene had them all got up like little s.l.u.t.s, I mean it s.l.u.t.s. I do not think this garbage should be on the air, its sad, its traumatizing and disgusting too.the moms are usin those kids. I really dislike that so much.ugh.

Amen to that. I would never let my child dance in such a situation nor would I teach in such a manner.

I haven't seen the show and don't plan to watch it. I watch little television (and am leaning toward going back to not having a television again when we move to our next place). Reality television is usually farther from "reality" than any of the fictional shows. With a bit of editing, even rationale people can be made to look like lunatics. Plus, reality television feeds on extremes. The average person isn't interesting enough to bring in the viewership. The reality television-watching public demands extremes. Then, people can villainize or root for the "characters" on the show as they see fit; plus, watching "bad" people on reality shows gives viewers a way of feeling better about their own lives. As for Lifetime airing such a show, it is exactly the sort of thing that I would expect that network to air. Of course, the show could just as easily be aired on any of the major networks and most of the basic cable channels. Just about all of them have taken to devoting much of their schedules to programs that are on this level or just a step or two above.

The only "reality" (which, as you say, it's not) tv I watch are home improvement shows, cooking shows, and some of the performing shows like American Idol, Dancing with the Stars... etc.

As much as I agree, it does give a pretty good insight into the world of more "competitive" dancers. My younger sister has been dancing as a little girl and so I've been to my fair share of big/prestigious dance competitions. There really are teachers who are so intent on winning (and the money that comes with winning top prizes at competitions) that they don't actually care about their dancers. They see them as tools, a means to an end (a bigger paycheck). There are also moms out there, who are over critical of their daughters and constantly push them beyond their healthy/normal limits. However, I feel most sad of all for the those little girls. At such a young age you can already see that they don't love to dance the way the average 7-13 year old dancer at a more "low-key" studio loves to dance. That's probably the saddest part of all. Taking something these little girls probably loved and then ruining it for them, or at least warping their view of it.

I trained, top competitive dancers for years. Never, ever, did we need to treat anyone in such a manner, just to win. Kids will learn how to treat others in how you treat them. I fear that they will grow up to think that it's normal to treat others that way.

I haven't watched this show, and I don't plan to. However, I did see a long commercial promoting it and found it absolutely upsetting to say the least! That teacher is 'evil, rotten, cruel and nasty' lol. If I had girls interested in dance, she would be the last person I'd entrust them to. And, those mothers that see how she acts have to be a little crazy for letting their children continue there. It's bad enough that those kids dance their hearts out and have to be belittled that way, but to show them being humiliated by an adult on national tv...well, let's just say I think that makes those parents just as cruel. I hope this show doesn't last, and not to be mean spirited, but part of me hopes that sadistic teacher loses a lot of business along the way.

Hi nanajanet, after long time I got chance to talk to you. It is very great that you are a dance teacher. Do you know oriental dance specially Indian dance. Indian classical dance has great tradition. What type of dance you teach? I like Western Ballet dance. I know little about Western dance . I hope in the next discussion you will give idea about this subject.
