An overwhelming majority of voters nationwide want members of Congress to take a pay cut until the federal budget is balanced, and a plurality also thinks the president should chop his salary in half until that time.
The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of Likely Voters shows that 82% believe members of Congress should take a 25% pay cut until the federal budget is balanced. Only 14% disagree.

I think this is only fair as these are the people responsible for getting our country into the financial mess we are in. It is my opinion that they should be held financially responsible. Do you have any other ideas how they should personally have to be held responsible?
BTW to trash the source will not really help much.

The problem is waste and fraud. Members of Congress need a salary, or most of them do. So let's cut waste rather than salaries. Get rid of the leased cars we pay for and make them pay for them, ditto for their drivers. End the pensions--a congressperson gets a pension after just ONE TERM!! No more Cadillac health care, let them pay for their own. No more life insurance, franking privileges, congressional gym and free parking. We spend MILLIONS on this crap to pamper the people who bankrupt the country and grind our Constitution under their heels.
Presidential perks should immediately stop, too. If he wants to take his wife to New York, let him pay for it himself, immediately and not on a tab. Campaign trips should be out of his own pocket, too, he's been on more than 30 of them in the past couple of months and WE paid for it as far as I know.
I could go on and on but let's get real and make some significant changes to cut waste and fraud. If we got rid of that, we'd probably have a surplus.

Excellent points! We tend to forget about all of the perks they get and many times they are out of the building more than they show up to do actual work! We all just figure there is nothing we can do...it is what it is and will not change. Wish I had a real answer to change the system!

You're right. Government employees all over the country at the state and local levels right now are contributing more to their health care and pensions and that includes people like me making under $40K a year. I don't see why the bums in congress, making 6 figure salaries, shouldn't have to do the same thing. Since they are making hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, they will still be making more than a good number of CEOs even after a 25% pay cut.

I absolutely agree that their salaries need to be cut or even eliminated temporarily. None of them "need" that income, since most of them are well off. None of them need it as badly as our senior and disabled citizens, which they threatened to not pay.
Cut perks, yes, and their "retirement" plan which pays them an enormous sum over the years if they've served only two terms.
It seems to be easy enough for them to cut our income, so why not theirs?

I've always thought politicians had a cushy job...getting paid way to much money for what they manage to accomplish! I think this is a great idea! It might actually give them an incentive to do something besides talk.

The very least the scoundrels in Congress should be required to do would be to take a huge pay cut. It would be great if they, who continue to profit by our loss and their complete and utter dereliction of duty in favor of greed, personal gain, and power-mongering would be required to pay us back some of what they have stolen from us. I just read that Nazi Pelosi's net worth is up 62%, not bad for a criminal seditionist who spouts inanities, like "pass the bill to see what's in it". Why is she allowed outside an institution and why are so many Americans foolish enough to allow such "inmates to run the asylum?
As to the usurper, he should, after being handed a l-o-n-g prison sentence, be required to pay back every single cent he stole from us with interest. Trillions of dollars for his "date nights", whims and fancies of his fraudulent self and Madam fistbumper and her servants, and all of our hard earned dollars to keep his vital records sealed, and our monies stolen to subsidize and empower our enemies. That is the very least penalty he should pay for deliberately destroying our economy through his Muslim jihad mission/Adolf Hitler defined terrorism - hit the economy to render us a third world nation and remove all of our freedoms and sovereignty. As Henry Kissinger said, Soetoro will lead us into the NWO. Of course he should be removed before the coup de grace.
Returning all he has stolen with interest, including the fake Nobel Prize money, will be "no sweat" for him since his Soros/Strong/Arab backers have infinite supplies of money.
His DNC co-conspirators, including Pelosi, Reid, Frank and their ilk, and criminal "administration", gunrunner/Muslim protector Holder, tax cheat Geithner, liar/anti-American Napolitano, criminal Elena Kagan, racist Sotomayor should join him - any of the other major players, as well, be they Democrat or Republican.
All of them should be held to account with proper penalties for their criminal, treasonous actions. In an honest, truthful, and just world they would not be allowed to get away with murder, figuratively and literally (Lt. Quarles Harris, Jr., Jim Miller, John Wheeler III, to name a few of the underinvestigated), like Casey Anthony did.

Not only should they be the first ones who take a pay cut they also should have their health care benefits cut and their free health clubs, pools etc. Don't they get free healthcare for life (MUCH better than anyone on Medicare gets) by justserving ONE term? They are outrageous in what they want the working people and the disabled and the old to accept but don't ask them for any sacrifice.

There is a circulating e mail that suggests that they have term limits, no pension from their time serving but rather receive Social Security, and should have to have whatever health plan the rest of us end up with. I think those steps would save some money as well.

Yes I agree it would save some money and perhaps they would enjoy feeling like the rest of us when we have our existence threatened.

That is definitely a good idea. When I think of the money politicians make, and the problems the country is having, it's unbelievable. Now, I'm up here in Canada, but my husband is an American, so this will affect him, if they don't come up with something, fast. Why can't America be more like Canada? Our economy is doing fine!

I think if only doing one or 2 terms they get ut and work like the rest of us and not draw a wage like they do whn in office.
also give up some of the stupid programs they have cant remeber what some were but things that the gov. has put in that uses up way to much moeny and cut obamas trips and bowing to people

There is an email circling the country that is too long to post here, that gives some great ideas on what Congress ought to do to get the respect of the American people back again. It does not ask for a pay cut per se, rather they should be paid only when they actually work...lol That would be quite a pay cut. They should get the same health care as the rest of the nation, which in a lot of cases is ziltch. They should not vote themselves pay hikes...duhhh. Pay increases should either be tied to SS increases or 3% a year whichever is lower. I vote for the SS increases...Ziltch again. They should only be allowed to hold 2 terms and cannot pull a retirement. Sounds good to me.

I once got a list in an email that showed all the stuff that we as tax payers pay for. And I learned at that time that they vote themselves raises and all kinds of things I hadn't realized. It is rediculous. With all the problems going on right now they should cut their own salaries since it is astronomical as it is.

I have already said the pres shouldn't take pay nor the congressman or senators alike.
Most of politicians are crooks anyway and have oodles of money and could live a life time with what is in their savings or financial ventures.
YEp, let them take the heat since they are the one who got us into this mess and I know cuz I've it about 55 years......
If the government and it's "people" would take cuts, we could get back to at least somewhere called square one with no problems.
They can vote in their own raises and take us poor folks to the cleaners, let the goveernment suffer for a while.
