Zoos are often controversial because many people believe they are necessary or even harmful. If properly managed, I fell that zoos have a lot of value. In fact, I believe zoos are useful two main ways:Educating the general public and advancing scientific research. Zoos can be wonderfully educational places. They provide a safe, controlled environment to learn about a specific species. Children can feel safe exploring the world of chimpanzee there, and adults can learn about and see types of birds they have never seen before. Unlike in the wild, there is no worry of being physically harmed by an animal. What do you think are other uses of zoos?

I want to know how many people go to zoo to study about animals? I always watched biologists in jungles to study about species, but not in zoos. Putting animals behind bars just to see them is not humanity. I never seen african, japanese, chinese and many more people from various countries. Should I have a zoo where there all types of species are kept in cages?

Yes people go to zoo and study and do research. Students go there and study about different animals. If we go to the forest to see such animal, it will be difficult to find one and it is also risky. But in zoos, without any risk, students can directly go there and study them.

About 90% people go to zoos just for enjoyment not for study. For rest 10% we are punishing animals. A free animal's behavior would be definitely different from a caged animal. How can you study?

I see them as entertainment because the animals serve that purpose. However, there is also the issue of caging wild animals and not letting them run free in the wild as they should. But on the other hand the animals get excellent care in most of the zoos. So I guess there is more than one way to look at the situation.

Yea wild animals are caged but as you said they get excellent care and they are same too. They are free of predators. They will have to protect themselves from predators if they are free in the wild. They might have already lost their life.

it depends on the zoo. some have horrible conditions, and are not fit for the animals to live in. it also depends on the animal. some are not suited to captivity. first of all, when thinking about the conditions for the animals, in the wild there are many species of animals whose habitat range will be dictated purely by how far they NEED to travel to meet their needs. some animals territory will only be large if it needs to be. if they are within 100 yards of food, water, territory and breeding possibilities, they might never leave that 10o yards, and be perfectly happy with that. other species need to range further in order to display their natural behaviours, and their needs are not met by providing their basic needs in a smaller area. some wild animals naturally only have a small territory. and they can do very well in captivity, as they have everything they need, and they are not cramped because they would have the same range in the wild. so as long as the animals have adequate enclosures, and are not animals whose needs are greater than a zoo can provide, then there is no harm done. so on to the good that zoos CAN do. first, and maybe least, is education and entertainment. none of us NEED to see these animals, but it gives us pleasure, and can inspire us to go on to help the wild counterparts of the creatures we see. but by people paying money to see the animals, the zoos don't only fund the care of their own animals. many help to fund charity projects that help to maintain the wild habitats of different animals. help to prevent threats to the wild animals. and many have captive breeding programmes where a viable gene pool is kept going between many zoos, so that if the habitat should become more stable, there can be released animals that will help prevent inbreeding in the wild. where habitats are more stable, some animals are bred to be released and help maintain the wild populations. so there is some harm, where animals are kept in inadequate conditions, or their mental, social and behavioural needs are not met. where zoos provide adequately in these areas, there is a lot of good they can do. if they see visitors as a way of raising money to care for their animals, captive and wild.

As with you, I believe that zoos are wonderful for educating the public about animals that they might never see if they were not in a zoo. As I live in North America, I would never see a giraffe up close if it were not for the zoo. I know my children have always enjoyed a trip to the zoo and I see no harm in them at all. I believe that zoos also are a wonderful way for children to see how animals should live within their habitats.

Zoos are also important for the research opportunities they provide. Research is safer and easier to conduct than in the wild. Scientists can feel secure in the confined area of the zoo. For example, while conducting a medical experiment in an open field, scientists have to worry about both the animal they have to work with, and also other animals nearby. In zoos, however, they need only worry about the research subject.

I agree. In today's environment, atleast the animals in the zoos are safe. Animals are let out in open spaces which is of course enclosed as I have seen in the mysore zoo in India. The animals need to be protected because man is crazy enough to hunt them to make money fast like the crazy hunt for nagamanikyam in kerala, where the snake was killed to get a mythological gem believed to be located in the hood.

You know that today many people don't have a chance to see the real wild animals in the big city. And don't you think that it is sad that the children can only see the animals from TV rather than seeing them in person? So the zoo is a good place for people to know more about animals. It is lots of fun, especially for the children. I love China

yes... zoos are very good for educational purposes. little children can see the real animal that they knew before, but only in books. we can learn, from close, about their behaviour. BUT..... and this is a big "but"! i can't think of the importance of zoos because then i think only about us, the public. i have to think about the animals, too. and i wonder if animals like zoos or if they feel hostages... there are little zoos in which i know the answer: animals are suffering as they have no space and treatment there is bad. i just would love to ask the animals how do they feel in big zoos and if they like it. if just they could talk...

You points makes lots of sense. We really don't know how animals feels. May be they like to be a free bird than a bird in the cage though it is being taken care of. It would be very great, if one can communicate with animals or understand their feelings.

i appreciate the existence of the zoos. this way children have the chance to see the animals and learn things about them without going to the wild forests or such. i beleive this is a safer zone for the children.

Zoos are necessary in today's world. Because many animals are dieing from smugglers and other peoples. If we need to protect the animals we need to improve zoos. Not even in urban we also need to develop in rural areas. And also major use of wood in forests also decrease the animals growth.

For us to know that Those animals in the zoo will no longer exist in the future if we dont take care of them!
