Can anyone advise what to do to a laptop that is not allowing the Microsoft word documents to open, plus its suddenly running really slowly. I do have an antivirus from Mcafee but someone recommends Security Essentials. Anyone has anything to add that might help? Plus where are some good trusted websites I can order reasonably sized(15")and priced laptops from.

Well Mcafee is really bad anti-virus , so go for Avast! Home Edition it is free. Than i will recommend you to reinstall the windows ,this way your laptop will be cleaned form any problems.
Great site to buy IT stuff is "newegg" ,so visit it and i'm sure that you will find what you want.
Cheers

Don't ever used Avast, that website is itself a virus. And I have many friends whose PC/Laptop got corrupted just for using that crap anti virus.
If you can buy anti virus, go for kaspersky. And it you want free anti virus AVG works really good. It is PC friendly anti virus.

I dont think its because of virus but maybe just wrong registry and system settings made your Microsoft Word documents wont open, and i also testing all common antivirus and for me McAfee is doing good just update it for latest pc threats protection. Why dont you try drive or registry Cleaner/Defragmenter, maybe it could solve your problem..

It happen to me once and cause by malicious virus (Trojan type).
When you scan your laptop, do it on safe mode.
1. Run the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool.
2. Run the McAfee Stinger Tool (optional)
3. Make sure Windows Updates are turned on.
4. Get Notified for Microsoft Security Alerts.
If not working, Change your anti virus repeat steps above.
Note: Your Anti virus is too heavy for laptop, it make your computer run slowly. (Usually take some space on your RAM to work properly).
