Why do we spend so much time and energy focusing on what we do not have, instead of focusing on the things we do have.

We tend to focus on artificial thing,if I can say. Well, we`re going to be hypocrite that we all want to be rich, successful etc. But if we keep thinking that we are unlucky because bla bla bla we will get frustrated. Sometimes what we see doesn`t reflect what really happens. We are amazed by a person who has perfect wedding,in a ballroom, hotel etc it seems that she is so lucky to have a rich man, but who knows what`s going on inside?Do you think that a person who gets married in ballroom will be richer than a person who has a simple wedding party? How many people have a big wedding but their marriage only lasts for 2-3 years (hope it won`t happen to me as I am still single now)?We think that people who work in a bank or multinational company are more successful and smarter than people in creative work..actually, we are shaped by wrong mindset that has been internalized in our society, family etc. It makes us overthink what we don`t need to think..

I would say It's because we are desperate to get things that we don't have, while taking what we do have for granted.

Although it does sound to be negative, it's actually a positive thing to be partially discontented with "our lot" . I don't mean to the degree where nothing we have gives us any pleasure or satisfaction, this is the way that spoiled brats probably feel, just to the extent that we wish to improve our living conditions or lifestyle. This sense of discontent is what enabled us to move out of caves millions of years ago, inspired the great inventors, helped us develop new technologies and to explore outer space.
It provides the drive to turn that patch of waste ground at the back of the house into a pleasant backyard which all the family can enjoy, or to acquire the skills to become a doctor. This is a characteristic which is inbuilt into most people and without it I think we would stagnate as human beings. We just need to reflect on our achievements and acquisitions from time to time so that we enjoy what we have already.

Humans are born to be ambitious. When we see things others that they've got something what we do not have, we tend to wish that we wish that we have what they have. In the end, we tend to forget the good things or the unique things that we have in which what others want for themselves too. I think we need a lecture on "Looking on ourselves for while 101"..hehehe

It is but just fine to do so, however do not do so excessively. Discontent can be a positive thing to motivate people but done excessively can ruin a person. I think envy and greed is the root of this nature of man. There is something innate of that in man. But man should control these such character and turn it to be a positive reinforcement to getting their goals.

Every human has a dream. And every human has something about their circumstances that they want to better. For example, no one wants to stay in the mobile home park forever, and others don't want a mortgage and car payments to be over their heads forever. We have many good things and we probably don't spend enough time being thankful for those things. However ambition is part what makes the world go round: it drives the economy, invention and even work itself. If we were always content with what we had, we would always stay in a poor position. We may even get poorer.
Both extremes are needed. A balance is best. :)

i think its because of one of the prominent character of human being - greed.
How much ever is given to a human, he won't be satisfied. He needs more and more.
In other perspective, a human being strive forward, on the basis of hope, aim, desires etc.
This makes the person feel that his life is worthwhile living, especially when he gets to his aim.
