A record I wish we wouldn't break!

In 1925, Austin, Texas had 69 days of 100 (38 C) or more degree days.
Let us remember, they didn't have air conditioning then...
In 2009 we nearly broke that record, but feel short.
Not this year. This year we are not only going to break that record, but SHATTER it.
Tuesday we are going to match that record, and there is no end in SIGHT for the 100º days.
Today is August 20th, 2011, and we can easily expect 100º days until well into September if this high pressure that's been sitting over us doesn't move, and it has only shifted east and west all summer.
Our lakes are very low, we are on water restrictions (not that I water my yard anyway and I got to car washes that recycle the water to wash my car.)
So, how's your summer been? Are you as ready for winter as I am?

I just mentioned your weather in my other response. I know it is awful there from what my friend was telling me. It has been hot in Tennessee to but not that bad. I am definitely ready for cooler times. I am sick of out heat.

We are heading towards spring after a long and wet winter here in Australia. We’ve had an unusually high amount of rain this winter which is good because we survived a drought not too long ago. The strange thing is that although there has been so much rain our dams are nowhere near full! I am looking forward to summer though, I love the hot weather and no matter how hot and dry it gets I enjoy it!

Our summer has been hot and dry as well. I have not heard if locally we will break any records but both Wichita and Dodge City are breaking the 1980 records, but not the 1936 records yet. We have had a few cool (upper 90's) days this last two weeks. Feels like a cold front. I anticipate a nasty winter to match this nasty summer.

My summer was pretty good. I had a first cousin visit I haven't seen in over 30 years so that was different. We did have some real hot days. I do have an air conditioner.
I am so not ready for winter. Here in Alberta Canada we get some pretty cold winters and I am a shut in during winter due to health issues. I do dread winter now but I can remember days when I enjoyed the tobogganing and playing in the snow.
Take Care.

Now that sounds rough - not one day of 100 degrees but 70 days or more? And that with water restrictions? I live in the icy north so that sounds like pure torture to me. How you stayed cool all this time?
I am indeed ready for winter. Summer here has been in the 80's and 90's, not as hot but still unpleasant. I am also getting sick of summer's visitors: insects. It has started to rain though and that is the sign of a timely, cold autumn. I can't wait! Winter is going to be more refreshing than ever!

Well, at least that's one good thing! I envy your heat wave bug repellent - the beetles here love the weather and have been getting into everyone's house. Then the moths - do not get me started on them. Let us just say the males in our household have been having a great hunt this year... ;)

Wow!! And we are complaining about the weather being 85+ here today. But since we do not have Air Conditioning in our house it is HOT. Personally I am really Glad I do not live in some of the areas where it has been extremely warm, and makes me not want to come visit Texas during the summer as well. Sometime there the weather has got to cool.

yeah, I'm looking forward to the cooler days so we can open windows - now its just too hot for words! We've been trying to get everything done, but with the temps over 100 every day we just are dying, and the heat index is 5-6 degrees higher then the actual temps!

I hate winter almost as much as I hate summer! But I am certainly wanting to have fall weather! Cooler days would be great. In Amarillo, we think we are having cooler weather when it only gets up to 95 or 96! It's been a really HOT summer!

I have a friend who lived for a while in Amarillo.
On the one hand, she really liked living there, she liked the people, the area she lived in, her job... On the other hand, she hated the weather, the cold winters, the hot summers, the dust storms...
Then they moved to Houston. She wasn't real happy with where she lived, but did like the cultural expansion she got and she really liked her job as well.
Then they moved to Dallas, and... well... things haven't been great up there, but they have been much improved the last few years over the previous 5.

Here in New Brunswick, Canada, we have been having the weirdest weather as well this summer. I think the temperature is probably been average, but we have been having thunder storms about every other day. Rain, I can understand, but we have been having wicked thunder storms with hail-the whole nine yards. I can honestly say that we probably have had about only 3 says in a row without a storm this summer. This has got to be a summer for the record books for us as well.

I am never ready for winter. We had quite a few days in the 90's but for the last few days it has been in the 70's. I think we broke a few records but I am not sure! Whenever I get tired of it being so warm, I tell myself that in a few months I will be cold!

You are right about the clothes, but I can never get warm until May or June. I hate being cold but living in the North, I guess it is something you must get used to or move. Moving is too much work, but I don't think I will ever get used to the cold.

Same here in Chicago, as it had been warm but not as hot as by you. I did go out to Arkansas for 2 1/2 weeks, which we were suppose to stay for 3 full weeks but the weather was way too humid and hot. It was 112 - 120 degrees each day we were there. In fact at ten pm it was 101 degrees.
Everything was so dry and fried and even the lakes and rivers were like saunas. I do hope you get some relief soon, as I can understand how terribly humid and hot you must feel.

Oh, that is awful! I remember summers in Arizona, hearing the weather person once again say the high pressure area hasn't budged and it will be 110° or more--AGAIN! Weeks and weeks of that without a cloud in site and my trying to entertain my kids indoors. It was awful and I'm so glad I'm no longer in such a climate!
Our summer here has had a couple of heat waves--hot and humid, blech! But for the most part we've had 70s and 80s. Although it's sometimes oppressively humid, most of the time it's just warm and sometimes a bit uncomfortable.
Thank God for air conditioning! Yes, I'm ready for winter although I'm sure I'll be complaining about the excessive snow and sub-zero temps!

We had our really bad summer last year although it still wasn't nearly what you're getting. We had over 30 days of 100+ degree weather but, for us, even ONE day over 100 degrees is not normal. Usually, low- to mid-90's for the hottest part of the summer is normal. This summer hasn't been too bad (only a few 100+ deg. days), although it did reach over 100 deg. for three days this Spring which totally destroyed my cherry crop.
From what I've been noticing, we're all in for unusual weather, probably from now on. I believe weather patterns are shifting but haven't settled down into any one predictable pattern... yet. I'm thinking we all need to own two homes, one in the south and one in the north so we can escape at least some of the horrible weather we all seem to be getting more and more of. Of course, that's not financially feasible so the best we can do is dream.
BUT, be careful what you wish for! With a summer like you've had, you may just find this winter well below normal as far as temps go and above normal for snowfall! We had that gawd-awful winter with over eight feet of snow total (when less than one foot is "normal") right before that blazing hot summer with almost no rainfall. So, when you say you're ready for winter, you should be more specific.

Wow! I knew it was bad but it is worst then I realized! I feel for you and rest of Texas! Right now in Wisonsin we have little humidity and it has been hovering around 80 the last few days. It is still August and we will probaly have a heat wave or two before September ends! It will not be like you are getting in Texas, though! Thank goodness for AC! I do feel for the animals of people who leave them outside in the heat without much water and not in the shade! I would like those people to be treated like they treat their pets as punishment! Anyway I said enough!
