I only upgrade my hardware and software when I actually need to or when I am forced to.
As long as my computer does what I need it to do, there is no need to upgrade. If there is somthing that I need my computer to do and it can't then it is time to get whatever upgrades are needed to accomplish that task. If a component fails, then it needs to be replaced; but, it only needs a replacement that meets MY needs - not necessarily the latest thing. There is no need to get an upgrade that has features that are useless to me. If I can't or don't use them the money spent on the upgrade is wasted. I might as well take the money and light a match to it - it doesn't benefit me either way.
However, some companies push and push and then refuse to support things that worked fine and then I am forced to upgrade. Others actually disable their software if you do not keep up with their latest upgrades. What is really bad about these companies is that many times the "update" does not perform as well as the older version!

I agree with you speakeasy. Upgrade as you need it. Good grief...you could spend a fortune upgrading everytime something new comes out. My son had a Win98 computer...my brother had it and handed it down when he needed a newer one for work. My son used that for probably about 10 years before it finally just couldn't "do it" anymore. And it was just more that the internet had changed so much that Win98 wasn't accepted anymore on most sites. But he stilled played his games on it (none internet). Mine here is now 6 years old and XP and doing fine. I wanted more speed and was told I needed more RAM (I had 1 gig minus what was needed for it to work) and then I put in another gig ($115) and still...did nothing for the speed and since I don't do games and such...I kind of wasted my money, although at least I have it if I need it.
I noticed that many sites don't take IE any longer as they just got so tired of constantly updating/upgrading when IE changed that they now don't take IE much! That is why I changed to Firefox. No probs since.
You just gotta take what you need to work for you and let the rest go on by! I can't imagen upgrading everytime something new comes out! What a hassle!

Actually, the latest update to Firefox was a big disappointment to a lot of us. Instead of making things faster it actually slowed down our computers.

Update your computer softwarez when its needed. IF your software is some 3 Years old and not keepoing up with other new application or causing problems then there is a need for updating the software.
Generally download a "Updater Software" this is a application that shows you which softwares are outdated and not working. These can be very useful, you can be attached to new updates.
Mostly older versions are good and some times newer ones are good so the Updater software will decide tham for you.

i think you should only update any technology when your current stuff stops working. otherwise there is no reason. just because you see that apple or microsoft or whatever released some new product doesn't mean you have to buy it. often times the so called upgrades or updates or whatever are barely any different than their previous projects....that is why i don't bother trying to keep up with much of anything anymore. i just get one thing i really want and keep it as long as possible no matter what new stuff comes out

I usually update or upgrade my computer if there's a need for it. If the parts are still working, I usually don't upgrade because it will just be a waste of money for me. I try to keep the parts running until they die out. For most part, once this happens, I'd get the one with the latest technology on them, in that way, I don't have to upgrade for another year or so.

According to my opinion it based on the usage of computers. In the case of proffessional they need to update the computer because this are their part of work. As in the case of normal users when they have to deal with software having high RAM so they need to be updated. I think most of them will update because of computers are available at cheap prices.
