Why are there people who likes to drink a lot?

My uncle who is part owner of one food company almost had a heart attack because one of his salesmen went to work drunk and could not reconcile his sales at the end of the day. When the salesman was called into the office he stills smelled like fumes. I'm having a hard time understanding why there are people who would want to get drunk. I mean most hard drinks taste bitter and how would that be delicious. Why would they keep drinking that? What can you say about this?
