It's different because US & the Phils is in different hemisphere. we call it hurricane in the US because it's in the Western Hemisphere (the North Atlantic Ocean, the Northeast Pacific Ocean east of the dateline, or the South Pacific Ocean east of 160E) and in the Philippines, it's called Typhoon because it lies in the Eastern hemisphere (the Northwest Pacific Ocean west of the dateline).

In fact, they are the same thing.
The word typhoon comes from Fujian Province in Southeast China. The accent of typhoon there means big wind. Now typhoon is usually used in east hemisphere, while hurricane is used in the west part. Or it can be said that the wind in the Pacific is typhoon, while the one formed in Atlantic is hurricane.
