My turn to say why I've been absent the last couple days...
No internet.
Why no internet?
No power.
Why no power?
Well... hydro cut it off because there was a fire in the other end unit of this 3-unit rowhouse...
And no one told me until 7:45 pm the following day that I needed a Fire Safety Authority Inspection before it could be turned back on. Of course, that office closes at 4:30 pm. So here it is Friday afternoon and I finally have power again.
But it cost me $293.80 to have the inspector come out. Nice, huh?
The following link will get you to a news report about it, however there are some factual errors in it, such as the fire started at 5:00, my unit had no damage except for the hole the firefighters punched in my attic to let out smoke, and the middle unit just has smoke and water damage.
And, oh yeah, all 3 cats concerned are female, and safe.

OMG. That was a rude surprise! And why should they tell you anything? You are sitting there without power after all. But how RUDE that you were required to have the inspection and then to Pay for it!

Yeah, well, as the caption under a cartoon I clipped many years ago, showing two scientists observing a lab rat getting through a maze only to end up in one of those spring traps, states... "Who said life is fair?"

I'm very pleased that you, the cats, and your home have come out of the experience relatively unscathed.
Will insurance cover the Inspection fee? You'd think that after a traumatic event like a fire the fire and power companies would be doing everything in their powers to help you return to normal life quickly.

OMGOSH, Glad u didn't have any more damage. WOW, that's pretty expensive to have it inspected. Looks like the owners of the complex should have to pay for that.I know u are glad to have it back on. I hate it when mine goes out for just a little while.I'm spoiled when it comes to electricity & water. We take it for granted i guess.

All three units are owner-occupied, unfortunately.

Wow!! They would not turn on the Power, etc. until you got an Inspection while also making you pay for this? What if you would not have had the money? Somehow this does not sound fair unless you were the cause of the fire. But glad to see that everything turned out OK and you are safe.

Well, being on disability, I suppose I could have gotten some sort of emergency fund from them, but I put it on my credit card. I probably would have had to wait even longer for power otherwise.

That fee does sound a bit extortive, doesn't it?

Hi, BarBaraPrz. I am so glad that you and your cats are okay! I had no idea that you were away. I just came back to myLot myself, this week. I have been away for almost two months now. It is a blessing that no one was hurt or killed. I am especially glad, that the firefighter's were able to put out the fire in time to save you all. You may not have any damage in your unit, but thank God that you are at least alive and well. I am very sorry about this tragic incident that has taken place to you and to your neighbors. Take care.

Barb really glad you are back! I was MIA too but not anything like your reason.
Just allowing the doctors to pluck at me again!
Anyway glad you and kitties are ok, and that you did not get any more damage than you did.
Read this discussion to my husband and he just shook his head.
Anyway special hug to you today!
