this topic is inspired by the story of my officemate. she is also a born again christian and well of course, bribing is not allowed right and we really go against it. but imagine the hassle of getting a ticket, paying for it and getting your license from the city hall.
anyway, what happened to her was that she was caught beating the read light, she knew she made a mistake and that she admits that she made a mistake... oh well the traffic officer went to her and then he asked for her license and she gave it the officer was sort of asking for her to simply tell him to just let her go, or maybe even suggesting or waiting for her to offer him money instead.
she just said, sorry officer i won't bribe, please give me my ticket...
and the officer was stunned! haha
so what about you... honestly.. what will you do?

I don't drive, but if I do, and got caught by an officer for doing something wrong in the street and would ask for my license, I would go ahead and give it to him and wait for my ticket. I don't mind taking the hassle of going to the city hall and do the necessary thing to do to get my license back. Bribing is really never good, that is why our country never loses these kinds of government employees because we are not doing something to get rid of these people but we are doing something so many will be asking for bribes.

I agree that corruption starts not with the traffic officer but the offending motorist. In my case I also ask the traffic officer to give us a ticket but most often than not, they let me go without a hitch because I speak to them with so much respect, they get amused. I also address them with Officer or Sir or Mr and let them know I understand that he is merely enforcing the law. Then for some reason they become more patient and understanding and send you off with only a verbal warning, and a smile!

Good for her. I would have done the same thing. I'm also Christian, so I wouldn't even think of bribing an officer.
Not only that, but it's possible that someone could bribe an officer and the officer ends up busting them for that too. So now, this person would have a traffic ticket, plus another one for attempting to bribe an officer.

Hi chiyosan!
I have never bribed an officer. I have been caught driving my scooter wearing only slippers (which is not allowed) and I have been caught for jaywalking which I did not received any ticket but I was forced to pay fifty pesos.
When I was caught driving with only slippers, they only gave me a warning because I told them I was s student driver and I did not know driving wearing only slippers was not allowed. The traffic officers, there were two of them, were very generous that day, although I thought they were taken by my charms (only to find out later that I looked horrible that morning ), and so they let me go without a ticket or anything. And I told them that I was with my brother who was teaching me to drive so that also was a factor that they let me go.
Now for jaywalking, I think the area where I was caught was really not a place to catch jaywalkers. I think I was scammed. But I was scared since it was my first time to experience that so I just paid fifty pesos.

I may ask the officer to spare me from the mistake i did and will be aware of it next time but i would not bribe him to let me go. He can do so out of his kindness and consideration but between bribing and receiving a ticket, i would rather have my ticket because anyway it is my mistake.

Your friend definitely had done the right thing. Honestly, for me that really depend on the situation. For me, I probably would bribe the officer if he can let me go easily, and the bribed money must not too high, and my violation won't be too severe too. Sometimes, we just want the convenient of solving a difficult situation, and hopefully everything goes smoothly.

Hi Chiyosan,
I have honestly never thought of bribing an officer. I have been pulled over many times and mostly for speeding. I just go along with it because I'm guilty as charged. Except for one occasion, they have always let me go with a warning. The one time that I did actually get a ticket, I did almost cry because I really could not afford it. It was near Christmas time several years ago and money was tight. Plus I know for sure that I was not going nearly as fast as the officer said that I was because I was in an old beat car that would not even get to the speed that I was being charged for. Still, I was going over the limit and rather than argue details, I just took the ticket. It was my own fault. Trying to bribe an officer can land you in even deeper trouble. It's better to take the punishment if you are guilty.

i know it is a crime, bribery. and i know i will not ever do it.
i simply do my best not to violate traffic rules.
but if ever i will be apprehended for traffic violation, i will ask for forgiveness.

I would see no point in doing this so i would not. it would just be asking for another problem to compound the one you already have. Getting a ticket is not the worst thing that can happen to you. getting charged with bribery from a trafic officer would be more devastating. i would just pay the ticket and not look back.

I guess I also wouldn't because it might backfire like what your story told. I would just follow the right road and if ever I violated something, follow the right procedure. There are too many corrupt government officials around, there is no point on increasing their numbers.

I haven't been in that situation before. But I think I will not do it because I'm afraid that the traffic officer will report me. Or even though the officer offered it, I will probably not give any cash for me not to get a ticket. If I do that, it seems like I'm advocating bribery and giving these traffic officer the right to collect bribes.

I don't like bribing people, I'd rather get my ticket the proper way. Besides, if I know I didn't make any mistakes, I won't be afraid to dispute the ticket and if I know that it's my fault, then I'll accept the ticket since it was my bad anyways. It would be great if no one would feed the crocs, in that way, we'd have a cleaner less greedy society.

Definitely, I would not bribe an officer to get away from a traffic violation especially if it was my doing. If I intentionally violated a traffic rule(s)then I will be ready to face the consequence if caught. However, in our country chiyosan, sometimes (or I think many times), a traffic officer will flag you down even without committing any traffic violation. In this kind of situation, the MORE I wouldn't bribe. They can take my license, but I won't sign the receipt stating that I made that particular violation. Bribing is one of the reasons why many of these traffic enforcers develop the guts to go the "wrong way" in implementing traffic laws.

i think if you say to the officer like this, he may think you are joking even though you are in the most serious. i think if you don't want to bribe, you should choose to accept the fact that your ticket will be expropriated. and the best way to avoid bribing is to avoid making these mistakes.

I think that you have to be really careful about doing things like this, because you don't know what kind of person the officer in question is going to be. If they accepted your bribe then you will have saved yourself from getting the ticket, however if they didn't accept it there is always the chance that they might go to the police and you would be arrested for bribery which is actually against the law. Sometimes it's best just to accept your ticket and pay it, as you at least know the amount of trouble you're in at that point.

It depends to the situation... First, she beat the red light so its really her fault...Not bribing the officer? If she's really in a hurry and won't get hassled by the officer, then if she can afford it, then pay him ...but considering that she didn't bribe so that means she can afford to pay the ticket from the city hall...Considering also how much for that ticket... And she has a lot of time to go there and process it...
Traffic officers love those motorists who don't follow traffic laws...
