How Did You Get Rid Of Your Acne?

I hate acne. I've been suffering from it ever since I hit maybe 8th grade. I've tried everything. ProActiv worked for some amount of time but stopped. Then I used prescription Differin and that made things worse! I hate acne with a passion! Nothing works and my face hurts and everyone stares at me like I have some kind of disease. And I get these big cyst acnes that take up maybe half my face an don't go away at all. I've tried salt water rinses too, which seemed to help a bit.
Did you suffer from acne? If so, how did you get rid of yours? Or at least, lessen the breakouts?

Are you on birth control?
Acne is generally caused by 2 things. 1 is hygeine. If your face is oily and you don't clean it properly, your pores get clogged and turn into pimples.
However I'm going to assume your problem is not hygeine because you've stated you've tried a lot of things to get rid of the acne, so I must assume you wash your face multiple times a day with acne cleansers and other products meant to help acne. (I always used Noxema, and loved it.. and never had much of an acne problem until I was pregnant).
The second cause of acne is hormones. No matter what product you use or how clean you keep your face.. hormones will cause ridiculous acne occurances and there's nothing any over the counter product can do for you.
I dealt with this during a pregnancy. I used every acne product known to man and it didn't help. It was hormones causing the terrible acne.. and due to being pregnant I could not take any hormone pills to correct the problem. After the pregnancy was over, the acne was gone and I've never dealt with it again, thank goodness.
Unless you are pregnant now, I would talk to your OB/GYN. They can prescribe a birth control pill that contains hormones that should keep your acne under control. Tell them you want it specifically for controlling your acne, so they can prescribe the right dosage. It might be higher or lower than a typical birth control pill.
Good luck, I hope that helps.

Most commonly prescribed birth control pills help regulate the hormones and as a result reduce acne. However, progesterone only pill (pop pill), Mirena IUD (progesterone only) and Depo-Provera (also progesterone only) can all stimulate cystic acne and oil production.

My general doctor put me on birth control to treat acne when I was 14 and I'm still taking it. While it did help, it didn't eradicate my acne. Hygiene and hormones are not the only causes of acne, there's also evidence to suggest that diet, lifestyle, and stress levels play a huge role. And besides those factors, genetics is credited as being the heaviest. Some people are genetically doomed to have terrible skin no matter what they do, and on the other side of the spectrum some people are blessed with beautiful skin that seems immune to poor hygiene, bad diet, and high stress levels.

Back in my high school days, I did suffer from acne. I actually got cysts, so when I went to the dermatologist, I was prescribed different creams to apply to my face. Then the medicine Accutane came out, so my doctor put me on that. It did wonders for the severeness of my acne. Accutane is a very powerful medicine and is used for the most severe cases of acne. But if you want to take a more natural approach to treating your acne, I have heard that tea tree oil works. I personally have not tried it yet, but may do so to treat the occasional breakout I get due to the hormones I have for being a woman or because of stress related events in my life.

I have wanted to try accutane, but I was told that the side effects can be dreadful. How did it work for you? I have heard good things about Tea Tree Oil as well.

That is an interesting take. I have tried altering my diet but did not notice my skin clearing up. However, having a healty diet has many other benefits so it can't hurt.

I am 60 years young now, i don't suffer from this any more, here are some tips to prevent and get rid of them..
Apply garlic paste over them or rub one or two cloves of cut garlic; this prevents infection.
Apply egg white with a cotton swab, wash with warm water after 15 minutes; this prevents recurrence of pimples.
Mix paste of sandal wood, tender neem leaves with rose water, apply at bed time, wash with warm water in morning.
Apply paste made from powder of orange skin dried in shade and mixed in water, apply at bed time, wash with warm water in morning.
Always avoid oily, spicy foods, keep your bowel clean.

Hello Stephanie~ I just want to ask, have you tried to visit or go to the dermatologist for your acne problem?
I think it's the best option. Yes, there are lots of remedies that might work for me but might not work for you or to others (or worst, it will only worsen the problem) because we all have different skin type.. so i think when it comes to skin problems like acne, the professional has the final say on what medicine we should take or apply to avoid further irritation.

I had acne because of the oil produces in our face. One thing for sure to get rid of acne
sleep 8hours a day
if you feel itchy, don't scratch it or touch it will worse
drink glass of water @ least 6-8 glasses everyday if you are expose to the sun double it because water is essential to our body it excretes toxins.
use mild anti oily solution
wash your face with mild soap two times a day(morning and night)

I hate acne too. I still get pimples from time to time, and I can't really get rid of pimple marks. I use Olay facial wash and moisturizer and it seems to be good for my skin. I still do get pimples sometimes though, especially when my period comes along.

Hiya steph,
I used to use Clearsil and that was the only thing that did work for me and I am glad to see that they are still around.
Having gone to Boots the Chemists countless times I chose Clearsil and never looked back.
Using the Soap and the Cleanser is very often just enough to break down the cycle of it coming back again and it took down the biggest part of the problem in just a few hours sometimes right away depending.
Had an oily nose (grin) well a bit of one but for me Clearsil worked like a gem and secretly one of my Kids says its rubbish but he uses it on the quiet as well.
I told him to use the concealer cream as it dries up the acne and he said thats for girls but he uses it because its hidden away in a Drawer in his Room.xxx

I had really bad acne when I was growing up and I still get the occasional acne even now at age 34! I started drinking plain water and my acne started to clear up! Do you drink plenty of water to keep hydrated? I started drinking tons of water every day and then I also used Clearasil facial wash. That also helped. I hope it goes away for you! Pro-Active I have heard also helps a lot!

Dalacin-C and some facial cleanser/toner. What you do is you put the powder inside Dalcin-c capsule into the toner. Shake well. Apply it on your face using a cotton ball, every morning and before you go to sleep. This is a FOOL-PROOF and SURE FIRE way to get rid of those acne.

I too have suffered with acne since I was young. I'm 33. It got a little better in my late twenties, but never went away completely. then 2 years ago it cam back with a vengeance. I was later diagnosed with an autoimmune condition, that makes me develop cystic acne.
I did a lot of searching, but eventually came to acne.org. It reminded me of what worked in my teens and early twenties.
1) Cleansing- A mild, but medicated cleanser, like Neutrogena's Glycerin based with 2 % Salicylic Acid (My ten year old started using this over the summer too) or Serious Skin Care's Glycolic Cleanser. Once or twice a week use a Benzoyl Peroxide Cleanser like Clean & Clear's in the purple tube, it has 10% BP. Try to avoid exfoliating when you have raging break outs, it can cause more inflammation, but some of us need to. Use a gentle one like St. Ives Medicated Apricot Facial Scrub (2% Salicylic Acid). (*** There are many generics that work just as well, Target's brand makes good ones)
2) Toning- Use a medicated toner like Neutrogena's Pore Clearing or Clean & Clear (both have Salycylic acid 2%). Toner removes any soap residue and helps clear pores of softened oil plugs. Follow immediately with moisturizer.
3) Moisturizer - use a non-comedogenic one (doesn't clog pores), preferably with Salicylic Acid, Alpha Hydroxy Acid, or the like & a sunscreen. These help unclog pores. By moisturizing right after toning, you signal to you oil glands that they don't need to go hog wild on oil production. Eventually (within a few weeks), you will notice that your skin is less oily.
Why Salicylic acid? It is an anti-inflammatory that helps clear blemishes, unclog pores, minimize scarring, etc. Acetylsalicylic acid is aspirin.
Why Benzoyl Peroxide? It brings extra oxygen to the pores and helps prevent and treat blemishes by killing bacteria.
Once a day you can also use a BP Gel (Persagel is a good one) to spot treat blemishes.
Why Sunscreen? Well, for one your skin is already going through enough trauma, doesn't need a burn on top of it. 2) the topical meds to treat it also increase sensitivity to sun.
The main goal is to reduce inflammation while treating the infection of your pores as well.
I've been in differen, Retin-A and my derm even wanted me to go on Accutane; I refused, I had a couple friends have long term damage from it, one mental, the other liver. Getting natural sources of zinc and Vitamin A in your diet can always be beneficial too!
Good luck. Hope this helps!

I have acne when I am in highschool, It was a nightmare for me. But instead I learn to deal with it properly. Use a soap that best suits your skin type if it is oily or dry. Never use strong astringents and soaps.
Be sure to drink 7 to 9 glass of water everyday because our skin needs to be hydrated every day. Ans also sleep a lot. up to 8 hours a day.

My sister got the acne gene in our family. She used to get so mad at me because I always had clear skin (she needn't have worried, I'd get my genetic payback later in life even if it wasn't acne). Have you tried looking up foods that help acne? I know there are a lot of anti-inflammatory properties in a lot of foods. And that definitely helps decrease the cause of acne. Also, they say water water water, and no soda. As for products, have you tried a product called Zapit? I don't know where to get it anymore, but when we were teenagers my mom bought it for my sister and it worked. But like I said, I don't know where to buy it now. I know none of this will cure you for good, but I hope something someone says can help you.

When I was a teenager I had acne around my chin mostly. I had the oily T complexion. I used a product popular at the time named Stridex. I used it morning and night, washing my face and rubbing this into my clean skin. I have aslo heard that this new product called ProActive is helpful as well.

Mostly I outgrew it. But I found that the products they sell only ever worked for a time, the best I ever used was Natique Skin Care. Makes your skin feel super good too.
When I was younger every one told me it was the candy, but I think if diet has anything to do with it, it is the animal fat. Regular saunas work well as well.

My face is filled with acne when I reach my 19th birthday and this has continue until I was in my middle 20s. As I reach my late 20s my skin become smooth. I use to avoid eating foods that cause my acne to break out such as nuts and chocolate with peanuts. Here in the Philippines anti pimple facial wash or Neutrogena can help you avoid those icky and greasy break outs. Just use a mild toner. You can try products in sachets to see what will work for you. Do not try to pick on your acne since it would leave you with skin craters that you won't appreciate later on.

I still struggle with acne as well and I have tried everything I could think of, including proactiv. Now I am using Dudu Osun African black soap. It's made of all natural ingredients from plants and it has a clean smell to it. I have noticed my skin clearing up little by little. The important thing I have found is not to use harsh chemicals.
