hehe well i remember that back in highschool having to answer a "what is your motto?" question is pretty normal, and we thought wow these statements we declare as our motto is the words we live by.. and then we move on.. and forget we ever had a motto.. suddenly saying "patience is a virtue" is to be answered back with "but time is gold :... haha
do you think that we should still have a motto in life? or really.. these are just words that we might not even need to have and we can still live our perfect life? your thoughts??

hi chiyosan.
i've always believed in mottos. i've lived my life with a couple. there is not one that stands out at this time but one of my favorite ones, and this is a daily mantra that i read to myself every single day, is this:
be the kind of man that when your feet hits the floor each morning, the devil says 'oh crap, he's up!'

Your post render me nostalgic!
I vaguely remembered being the idealistic teen that I am- so many aspirations to achieved and gazillions of virtues to uphold. Perhaps it comes out naturally in me-being raised as morally upright and sheltered as possible.
I still have few of those mottos that I lived by. I have my ironclad philosophies that I uphold. The worth of self, value of life and love of God are few of those things.

I have so many motto in life that sometimes I don't know which to follow anymore. Ahahaha! but that's okay. Life is a buffet of challenges and each challenges applies the best motto or saying that fits better on the situation.
But my number saying in life is.. "Pray until something happens."

I think it's not really a must to have a motto in life. We can live our lives the way we what it to be without following any motto as long what we are doing is good not does not cause any harm to anybody, then we can still live our lives. But, I still have a motto anyway. It helped me somehow to still remember to be a good citizen and be a good person.

Have a motto in life is important. At least that will determine the limits in every work and your effort. But in fact it does not mean anything. So, between believe or not, you should have a motto in life, but do not depend in that. Just face what you have to face in your life...

I have motto in my life " sometimes love is not enough". This words reminds me that no matter how you love someone you can still destroy your relationship or circumstances can do it. This words remind me that my partner and me should work to make relationship happy, because sometimes love is not enough.

In other words, both partners of the relationship, like husband and wife, should always be on the guard 24/7 to uphold and maintain the sanctity and holiness of marriage. You're holding marriage like an egg taking all precautions not to break it.

You remind me of those old school days, when we had Scouts and guides as part of my activity ....and the motto was "Be Prepared", that was the only time I thought about motto......and it is better that I don't have any motto because what I say I never do. I am following many good preaching in life, but I don't want to say that they are my motto, because then I may not follow them....and you are absolutely right, we don't really need to have a specific motto, we can still live a perfect life...

Hi chiyosan!
I remember my motto back in high school. It was printed in our yearbook along with some of our basic information. My motto was "If you can forgive but can't forget, better not to forgive." I thought I was living that motto. You know how teenagers are, they are emotional with all those hormones running inside their bodies. And everything was dramatic that's why it was my motto. And I did not want to be just like anybody else with common mottoes like "Time is Gold" or whatever.
I do think that it's good to have a motto in life. It's like your guiding principle for everything. That motto is not my motto anymore though. Things have changed and so do my outlook in life. I think having a motto will enable you how to do things or how to react to things when you encounter them. It's how you will live life.

I was told once when I was very young, "Beliefs are nothing more than an opinions & thoughts spoken out loud, until they are tested." I don't think I have one-line motto but I do have few beliefs & I try to stand by them. Another one I've heard was, "I can't trust you with a million dollars if I can't trust you with a penny." I always thought that comment has to do with a person's chracter. Something small to me might be a huge deal to someone else. I try to stick to my words no matter how trivial or small it may sound.

When I was in grade school and junior high we had a autograph book and we would ask questions and have friend answer and sign it. I remember that. But in my life my motto has always been: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. The golden rule is a good one to live by.

I don't have a motto exactly, because I'm just too indecisive.
I do regularly pick a quote that inspires me and focus on it though. Right now, for example, it is "It is never too late to be what you might have been" by George Eliot - it makes me think about things I wish I'd already achieved (ie better savings, a decision on my career after uni etc) and focus on achieving them now.
Do you have a motto?

i think we should! why? its just only our positive perception in life and as long as its in our mind we always believe in it. i remembered when i was a kid my grandma always thought me how to be matured enough and she always mentioned about like "act as your age", "time is gold",and actually it sinks in to my mind that i realized now it helps me a lot to think first in how i act.

Yes I have still a motto but it is not the same as it was as I was at highschool.
It is: treat others like they treat you. I don't everybody needs a motto. Some feel stronger if they live by that motto, to others (like me) it will be a reminder not to stay the way I always was and attrack all the parasites and abusers.
