I was astounded when I read this article that said that 1/2 of all Americans drink sugary drinks every single day. I live in Canada, and I'm sure it's the same here. How does this happen? Is this a direct result of the huge marketing machines of the big soda companies?

Why can't we just go back to the old days, and drink water instead of all that garbage? Maybe that contributes to the high obesity rate in the world. Do you drink beverages high in sugar, or just stick to water?

It is always a problem. The bad things are always the nice things that our palate likes and the companies are taking advantage of it. It is really up to us to control ourselves and really take care of our health. I do like sweet things. But most of the times I just have to get rid of them as much as I can and try my best to eliminate them from my body as soon as possible by eating good foods.

EGADS..how disturbing! I also was reading in MacLeans Magazine(you would be familiar with it, being Canadian)...that drinking TWO cans of soda..Coke, Pepsi, 7-Up, etc., increases your risk of pancreatic cancer tenfold! 20 years ago, I was not even familiar with pancreatic cancer!
Reading the labels of all the "so called" Fruit drinks--the amount of high fructose corn syrup is appalling.
Fast world, Fast food--SUPER-sizing everything...so seldom am I anywhere that there is FAST Food, but when availing myself--they ALL ask if you would like a LARGE Coke, etc. Servers are taught to do this...so I concur..it is the BIG Soda companies. Hope your enjoying the last long weekend of summer! Cheers!

Mostly I drink water, unsweetened coffee and tea, milk, and on very rare occasions juice or pop. Yes, it is making us all fat.

I usually drink water, coffe or tea. In Summer I make fruit juices in the blender, but not very often mainly because I´m lazy. I only buy soft drinks for family parties when my grandchildren will come. They drink a lot more sugary drinks than what I do. I am sure that the media and commercials have a lot to do with people eating junk food and soft drinks.

I don't know why the rest of the world does it, but I think it's flavor. The human body needs more then just water in our systems. And, water basically has no taste. So to suggest a person depend on it for fluids, and souly depend on it, yeah that's most likely not going to happen. Some might. Others I'd disagree. You have the consersitive types who don't mind just water, but the body needs more then just water.
For me at times I need a little extra sugar. Quite often Milk, won't do it so I drink at least one can of caffine-free coke a day. Once and a while I might be persuaded to drink a little more, but the end result's the same. I get that extra boost. Though I'll admit I used to have a large sweet tooth. At times I still do, but I'm working on healther choices.

This certainly doesn't surprise me, but I do think that it is sad that so many people don't seem to be interested in their own health. I think that people should make more of an effort to cut back on the amount of sugary drinks that they consume, although it isn't just the public who are to blame. The people who make the drinks concentrate hard on making us want the drinks because they are made out to look attractive to us. They have techniques which they know will get people to buy them, so they are brainwashing us to a certain extent.

I'm going to admit, I do drink Pepsi. It helps when I am pulling all nighters, especially in school when I am working on several projects. I haven't drunk them as much since at the time, I was working full time and going to school full time, and I had no car, so I would lose a lot of time on the buses, and had to make up for it by pulling all nighters. Working at times when I should have been resting is not healthy, but I was losing productivity as well. Yes, I think the companies are pushing the drinks aggressively, but then again, what large company isn't pushing their product or idea to the masses. I also carry a gallon of water with me everyday to drink out of, so it not like I just drink straight pop. Some people told me that water would help give me energy, but when you are up 96 hours straight at a time, I don't see how is that possible, and I am not exaggerating. Because of the workload and school work, I have managed to stay awake for this amount of time just to get everything finished. I understand how water can flush things out of your system, but water has nothing in it. How does it give me needed energy?

to be honest even i do and most of the people even they do like sugary drinks
its obvious salty drink wont attract our taste buds .....but everything should be confined to a limit........it is better to have a drink once in a while like week or two
coz excees of it can lead to childhood obesity and many other diseases to name

drinking soda has an advantage too. People who drink softdrink may feel refreshed because of its content of carbonated water. And also, it contains caffeine which is antioxidant and people who drink caffeine is less likely to develop parkinson's disease according to some article I have read.
