My dogs got sprayed by a skunk!

So the other day my dogs were outside doing dog things, and they found a skunk to "play" with. Needless to say, they both got a healthy dose of eu de skunk in the face. now for those of you who don't know.. that is the WORST smell your dog can ever have. So I've tried a couple methods to get the smell off, and now its really faint, but it's still there... has this ever happened to your dog, and if so, what did you do to get the smell off?

Best thing for that is: 1 qt Hydrogen Peroxide 1/4 cup baking soda 1 t Dawn dish liquid Mix in a plastic pitcher with warm water. Pour on dog, lathering as you go. Allow it to sit for 15 minutes. Re-lather, rinse repeat. Follow with a gentle shampoo and conditioner, as this is alkaline and strips the oil out of their oil glands and will cause itchy skin. Repeat every few days as needed. The sooner you use this concoction, the less skunk musk will be stored in their oil glands. Just neutralizing it with tomato juice or another acid solution is not enough. It will not remove it from their oil glands. Every time they get wet or it is humid out, you will still smell skunk spray. My dog got a near miss, but enough to STINK a few years ago on my hubby's birthday, during his party. We did this right away, then again three days later. G-O-N-E I used to work at a vet clinic and this was the recipe we gave out. We even had it as a message on our after hours voice mail.

You're most welcome! Glad it helped. You may need to repeat it one more time, as their oil glands secrete naturally. At the very least wash them with a soothing shampoo and conditioner. Vet Solutions makes one that smells great and soothes.

What stary said is correct, tomato juice is good for removing most of the scent and to finish off, do a vinegar rinse, that will remove more of the scent and even fleas if your dog has any...This is what I did when my dalmatian cornered a skunk one time, YUCK!!!

Don't be surprised if even after the tomato juice and vinegar rinse that your dogs still won't have that good fresh smell for a while..You will still have a slight odor, but nothing like before and in a few weeks you can probably give them a nice bath with good smelling dog shampoo and it will be like it never happened..:D

I haven't tried vinegar. thanks for the tip, I'll give that a shot in the next bath.

Definitely use the tomato juice. You'll need to slather it in good so you will need some of the large bottles (or just get the cheapest cans) for each dog.

so far we've used 3 cans between the two dogs, and let them soak in it for an hour. Thinking will have to do this at least one more time.

Oh I remember the smell..lol my dogs (a sheppard and a doberman) used to never learn and were repeatedly sprayed. I soaked them in tomatoe juice and they had to keep it on for a few hours. They never were happy about that but they still never leaned. LOL it's messy but that is the only way we could get rid of the scent fairly quickly.

yeah this was their first skunk.. and I'm hoping it will be the last one. We did the tomato juice and we also did a mix with peroxide and baking soda and dish soap, but the smell around the face is still there a bit.

Not much will get the smell completely out except for time, lots of baths, and tomato juice. That stuff takes forever to get off.

tomato sauce and juice, lots and lots of it. but dont feel bad in the past 2 weeks my dog has gotten a porcupine to the face, a raccoon and a skunk. not to mention the he got kidnapped by my nabors that i havent seen since i moved here 2 years ago but one day they went to their house and next thing i know their truck is parked by my driveway and then they took off, after searching for my poor dog for hours i got a call from the dog warden, the nabors got my dog into their truck using chips and other treats and took him in to the dog warden. my dog almost never leaves my yard and i live on a seasonal road so there is almost no traffic so for them to come up and take him was really upsetting, luckly we have him back home.

Oh poor dogs, that'll teach em though huh? I have always heard of tomato juice or apple cider vinegar working to balance out the smell. You have to make sure that whatever you are using is getting all the way down to there skin and not just on there fur. You may have to rinse and repeat a couple of times before you don't notice the smell anymore.

LOL. Happens a few times a year... The best thing to get rid of the smell is a mixture of Baking soda, Dawn dishwashing soap and Peroxide.. You only need a teaspoon of Dawn in a gallon bucket and a small box of Backing soda and A small bottle of peroxide added to the mix.. and used that to scrub the stench away.... I don't think it is ever fully gone.. But since I learned this trick I always keep these 3 products in stock!

I know that smell! Very well! When I was growing up on the farm we had dogs. We had more then one dog get sprayed by a skunk! Pee UUUU! We never did anything about it. To my parents dogs were just dogs, nothing special! So the dogs had to deal with the smell themselves you can say! The smell did go away but it takes time!

My dog never met a skunk, as skunks don't live in our area. But I know how it is when your dog smells that bad. One day, when we met her German Shepherd friend Blacky, I smelled something bad at my dog. When I called her and smelled her from a short distance, I realized she was smelling like faeces. Blacky had rolled into human faeces and Binne got the smell from Blacky's coat. I can't tell you how bad it was, I washed her and shampooed her three times and the smell was still there.

hahaha that's funny:D you can use tomato juice, apply the tomato juice on the dogs body then leave it for 30 minutes before you rinse it, then shampoo. goodluck:D
