Why do dogs howl? Is it because they can really see ghosts? Our neighbour's dog which is a siberian husky howls almost every night while my bulldog and labs never do. Or is howling typical to siberian huskies?

i read somewhere that dogs howl when they are in heat. they howl to call the attention of their mate. before i heard of this information, a dog's howl scared me out of my wits. a dogs howl is just like a serenade to their mates!

It could be because the owners leave him in some other room for the night and he's unhappy about that so he howls for attention. I think howling is more typical for some dogs than others, and the husky is one of them. Dogs also howl when some noise is hurting their ears...that's why dogs always make such a fuss when they hear sirens because it's at a pitch that hurts them.

i have heard the superstition that dogs howl because they can see ghosts i do not believe that is the reason dogs howl to let other dogs know where they are it is kind of a lonliness thing dogs are pack animals they like to be around other dogs so when they are alone they howl to see if any other dogs are near siberian huskys are closer related to the wolf and howling is in their breeding the bulldog and lab were not bred into an environment where they need to howl but yes howling is typical to huskys and a few other breeds

My dog, used to howl when we would leave him at the Vet. His howling was a way to express his feelings because he felt abandoned. We always would come pick him back up and the Vet would say he howled the whole night!

When a dog howls it is not because of something creepy and ominous.
It is simply a way of getting attention, just like whining, barking and growling. It is the dog's way of saying "I'm here or I'm lost, where are you?" Varying pitch of howl lets the dog communicate with other dogs in far away locations. This form of communication is least used in domesticated dogs. Seldom would you hear a family dog howl, some never howl at all. Dogs are related to wolves which are well known for howling.
