Relaxing Sounds

If you could pick any sounds in the world to help lull you to sleep, what would they be? When I go to bed I'm often still stimulated by what I've been reading or writing. This keeps me from being sleepy. Sometimes if the windows are open, the sounds of the crickets are relaxing. But what relaxes me most is the sound of gentle rain on my roof. Of course, I can't make it rain whenever I need to sleep, so I bought some CDs of nature sounds. Most of them can also have stimulating sounds. But I found one that really does help. it sounds like a thunderstorm with lots of rain sounds and some occasional quite background music.
What sounds make you relaxed and sleepy?

When I started reading this discussion, I was thinking of how rain tapping on my window sounds so peaceful, but as i continued reading, I found we share the same thought
Yes, if i could pick any sound to help me sleep, i'd choose the sound of the rain. Thunderstorms always scared me and am not a very big fan of it but light rain or heavy rain, the sound always sounds really very soothing to me.

The answer is being relaxed and sleepy! I am a night owl and I have been awake over 24 hours before . So the Only thing that makes me sleepy, is Being sleepy! I love Thunderstorms but they excite me ,they don't make me sleepy. and onlt time can make me relax.

Remember how your two year old would play and play until they couldn't keep their eyes open? Well that's me. Unless I am tired , I stay up. And the main thing that keeps me up is a damn good movie. This reminds me of that slogan Turner Classic Movies used one year." Tossing, turning , counting sheep? Catch a movie , who needs sleep!

As you might have guessed, I'm also a night owl. What ofen happens to us is that about 2 we may start to get sleepy, but just want to finish one more thing on the computer. Then about three we get our second wind and don't feel sleepy anymore. What will work then is reading an old education textbook to soft, wordless music.

For me, this is a loaded question. I am a severe chronic insomniac. I sometimes can not go to sleep until daybreak and even then can only stay asleep two or three hours. Other times I can go to sleep about 10 pm because I am so tired but I wake up hours earlier than I wanted or needed. This is what happened last night. I went to sleep about 10 pm because I was so worn down from my insomnia but I have been up since about 3:30 a,m. I am writing this at 4:20 a.m my time.
Some sounds can help me relax but not necessarily sleep.
Sounds that help me relax include rain and sometimes a violent storm as long as I am safe and sound and at home. Sometimes I am able to fall asleep while listening to rain or a storm.
Religious music can relax me but any form of popular music stimulates my brain. I might be able to fall asleep listening to religious music. Popular music might relax me but not necessarily allow me to sleep.
However strangely enough, listening to TV in the background can help me relax and fall asleep. Often when I have not been able to sleep, I will go into the living room and lie on the couch. I will turn the TV on but very quietly and turn my back to the TV. I am not watching TV. I am listening to it but ever so quietly. And that has sometimes relaxed me and allowed me to sleep.
I love the sounds of nature like water moving and birds singing. These sounds might relax me but not necessarily allow me to sleep.

I forgot to mention that I often have been able to fall asleep listening to Imus In The morning or ABC World News, the overnight news. A radio does not work. There has to be a dim light from the TV. I often have my back to the TV. And the sound on The TV is very low.
I also sometimes can relax and fall asleep watching a really good movie. it has to be a movie that I am really enjoying. I guess that a movie I am really liking allows me to relax and sleep. If I do not like the movie, it feeds my insomnia and will make it worse.
This is among the reasons that it is important for me to have Cable TV with the premium channels. Sometimes I am homebound because of my insomnia. Other times, good TV will allow me to relax and sleep. But since I sometimes miss parts of a movie that I am really enjoying, I need On Demand to catch up with it another time.

I forgot to mention that I also have a somewhat noisy box fan that I sometimes use to cool me when I sleep in bed. I love the sound of my box fan and that sometimes helps me relax and sleep. I have to first relax to sleep. I have to relax my mind. That's where the problem is.

Radio can also work, without lighting the room. My husband often wakes early and sits in the living room with the radio on softly to a talk station. He falls sleep right away. Sometimes the same will happen to me if I'm in bed and a talk station is on. There's something about those hosts droning on and on that puts me out. But I prefer the rain CD.

I can sleep with the piano pieces of Jim Chappell especially the albums "dusk, serenity rush, acadia, night songs and lullabies. I love listening to his music because its soothing and relaxing. It can lead me to reflect on how my life has been , reminiscing the past and sometimes i felt like being part of the music .:-)
The sounds of the running water is the most relaxing for me. Since I have my miniature falls ( battery operated), i can have the luxury to listen to it anytime I like. The chirping of the birds in the morning and the cool breeze in the afternoon lull me to sleep in the veranda while watching the little birds jumping and transferring from one branch to the other.
For the actual oceans waves, i visit an ashram by the sea where the only music i can hear is the rushing of waves to the shore. And at night time, the rushing waves of the high tide. I do this every summer and staying in the ashram for a week.
In moments where travelling to that place is not possible due to the inclement weather,i settle for the ocean waves on a CD.
For many instances, i just listen to an instrumental inspirational music of the Jesuit Music Ministry.:-)

Oh thst is a nice sound. I also love the sound of the rain but not the thunderstorm. I am afraid of the thunderstorm. For me I love the music of the lullaby song. I can feel being baby again.. free of worries and problems...feel the lovely music that gives delight to one's feeling.. I guess each one have different taste with regards to the music that will keep them at peace and relieved with the world worries.

I do have some lullaby CD's but I haven't tried them yet. Maybe I should, just for a change. Though I also think that when something has worked for us night after night we begin to relax at the first notes because our body begins to associate that sound with wanting to sleep.

When I was quite young, I used to be afraid of lightening and thunder...I don't know what I thought would happen but it always worried me. One day my older brother told me as long as I saw the lightening I had nothing to fear because thunder came after the lightening. LOL it made all the difference and I was never again afraid of the noise. Now only my dogs are afraid of the noise..as most are...

I find that the outside sounds make me go to sleep, but more then that it is the darkness. I find that when it is cloudy and dark, I am more tired. I also get ready to bed an hour or two before I go to bed so if I watch Tv it will be something boring and I might play the piano or write something that is not exciting. But for me, just the outside stuff gets me going to bed. Oh by the rain has the opposite effect. It keeps me awake. especially when there is a thunderstorm.

I do most of my my lotting in the morning and the evening, is mainly for watching TV. Tonight however I am going shopping and will have a shower because it is getting to feel like fall , so do not think I will get much sleep tonight. I also spent a quite a bit of money, bought some furniture, and on top of it I am waiting for at least three orders. You could try my lotting in the morning.

For me it's just so relaxing to listen to the sounds of water. I love the ocean waves, a babbling brook and the sound of rain.
Interestingly, if my sink faucet is dripping and I can hear it when I'm trying to go to sleep, it drives me nuts and I have to turn the stupid thing off. Hmmm, that's funny. Maybe it's because it's too abrupt of a sound and not relaxing. There, I figured it out.

You are right, there is nothing relaxing about any kind of abrupt sound or noise.
I try to tell that to my cats and sometimes they listen but sometimes...

I think the problem with the dripping faucet is that rather than being a soothing and rather steady sound, with no real silences, the dripping faucet is a repetitive sound with silence between drips. Instead of a lullaby carrying you to dreamland, it constanly jars your senses as you wait, braced to hear each new drip.

I usually have no problem falling asleep. I have some of thoses nature CDs too. One that sounds really nice too is one that has whale sounds on it with gentle waves. The thunderstorms are nice too. I have no problem reading to get sleepy. In fact ive had many a book fall in my face from that. Of coarse it would suddenly wake me again. But i would be sleeping again in no time at all.

There is nothing more relaxing to me than a soft sound of heavenly music. It is like being rocked gently by the loving arms of Jesus. This is the reason why a small radio on our headboard never leaves that place. It should play old time godly hymns for me and my hubby each night as we lay down to sleep.
Another relaxing sound to me is the sound of the waves of the sea. This is the reason why whenever we go to the beach I always sit at the seashore and listen carefully to the waves as they rush too and fro. Many people at the beach may not notice but the sea is not just a relaxing sight, it also produces relaxing sound.

We have a local Baptist radio station that plays non-stop traditional hymns and baptist favorites with no commercial break except some for some devotional sermon which I also so enjoy. My radio has been nailed in this Baptist station.

Chirping birds are nice to wake up to, if they don't start chirping before I want to wake up, which they usually do. At night I find the chirping of crickets more relaxing. Birds tend to wake me up.

It could be anything. For the most part, I prefer to hear or listen to nothing when I want to fall asleep. I don't usually get attach to certain mechanism or stimuli for relaxation. It could be like any of the responses here like the virtual sound of an ocean or waterfall, trance music, or lingering rain. Any sound could potentially be relaxing sound.

I have to disagree. I don't find repetive sounds like snoring or dripping faucets relaxing. They drive me up the wall and make me very tense. But I don't mind the songs of crickets and distant owls.

Hi! Actually its kind of a family story. When I was younger, my mother read to us from the Cricket magazines and eventually Cricket book. Did you read it? Later on, I had two cats and one was born on my mothers birthday and she was so quiet I named her Cricket. Hence the screenname.
How is the cd working?

Silence is nice, but how do you find it? I've never lived anywhere that had no sounds. Even out in the country we have yipping or howling coyotes, birds or something thumping on the roof, crickets, and hooting owls. I find the cricket and owl sounds soothing and relaxing, but I get tense when I hear coyotes and banging against the house or roof.

It's not that there aren't any sounds, but it is relatively quiet where we live at night. If the TV is on really loud or one of our neighbours is having a function where there's lots of music and loud talking, I find it difficult to sleep. I'm an extremly light sleeper and the slightest sound does wake me up.

My favorite is a slow dripping rain on a tin roof. I used to have a friend who had a mobile home, and when it rained and I was sitting on the sofa, it'd just put me to sleep every time. Many years ago I used to have a tape that I listened to for learning to relax. It was sounds of the ocean, and you could hear the gentle waves coming in, and every once in a while a shore bird or two in the distance. It reminded me of the days I used to go to the beach and close my eyes and relax. When I moved, somehow the tape went missing, I miss it because it had the power to send me into a totally relaxed state! My grandson, as well as my one daughter, uses a white noise machine and it blocks out the traffic noises when they're trying to fall asleep. Personally, I cannot sleep if there's music on, no matter what type. If it's instrumental from a song that usually has lyrics to it, I'll lay there and sing along in my head. Even if it's instrumental and there's no lyrics, I still get caught up in listening to the melody and beat behind it.

I'm thinking I should just take my recorder out into my barn with the metal roof next time there's a gentle rain, and then once recorded set the playback on looping during the night lol. The sea gulls in the tape I had were so distant a sound that I found it didn't bother me too much at all. BTW...I liked your comment (below) about how the sound of a dripping faucet can get to you, but raindrops don't. Too true! I'm thinking it drives us crazy because we can see dollar signs in the drips...either $$ to fix it, or $$ if you pay for your water!

If I could get a tape that was just straight rain, I would. But they always seem to add some sort of music, and, of course, birds. The sea gulls wake me up again.

Rainy weather is the best thing to sleep in! In my house, I have a snoring hubby. I sometimes shake him, nudge him, push him, all to try to get him to change positions and stop making so much noise. If I can just get to sleep then he can snore to his hearts content...but he can drop off in about 3 seconds flat and it takes me a little longer! A couple of years ago I started leaving the radio on playing my favorite Christian music station Klove. Not only does it help to drown him out, but it gives me something better to concentrate on. It helps a lot. I still have to nudge him sometimes and he'll turn over.

I've thought for years that he had sleep apnea, and a doctor even said the pysiology of his mouth and throat probably meant that he was prone to that, but he has not, up to now, been willing to be tested at one of the sleep facilities.

We had that situation here, too. Turns out that Hubby's snoring is related to sleep apnea and Hubby would stop breathing for a few seconds and then snort to start breathing again. It's bad for the heart. He saw a sleep specialist at the request of his doctor and was diagnosed. Now he uses a machine to help him breathe at night and doesn't snore unless his mask comes a bit loose or something. He's not nearly as tired the next day, either. It would probably be a good idea to have your husband checked for this -- especially if he snores loudly, wheezes, or snorts as he sleeps.

I cannot sleep without some ambient noise and in the summer I have a fan going. When it gets colder and a fan is too much without raising the thermostat I take out my noise machine. It has 10 different sounds and I find that the stream running over the rocks is very helpful. I also like the rain sounds and the ocean.
I used to sleep great during the rain but not since I got this latest dog ten years ago..Gus is terrified of thunder, the very sound that soothes me to sleep the best. He burrows under the covers and scoots closer with every peal until I'm practically pushed out of bed!

I thought about it but Gus and Cookie are better than an electric blanket in the winter, we all keep each other warm. And it's nice to have some living thing to sleep with, even if they are a bed hog and a scaredy cat when it comes to storms!
Walmart often sells those noise machines around Christmas time for about $10. I've had mine for 5 years and it still works like new. Look for them in the area where they sell "grab a gift quick" packages like the baskets full of bath stuff, things like that around that time of year.

i agree with you when you said the sound of gentle rain on my roof is a relaxing sound that can make you sleep specially if the rain came in the middle of a very hot night it does not just sound relaxing but it feels relaxing as well. sound of leaves when i gentle wind blows is relaxing too. bird chirping while you can hear my wife cooking is very relaxing too. it sounds like you are in a vacation. ahh best things in life are really the simple and the free ones.

har har har your response made me remember last year when we are at japan for a three month work. there are a lot of crows everywhere. and their noise is scary and not relaxing at all. so i agree with you that not most birds. if this are birds that chirps then that would be relaxing but if ths sounds they make are like crows then it is not easy to find relaxation.

our neighbor planted an ornamental or a dwarf bamboo tree in her garden and what's nice about it is the bamboo tree is very near my room. the sound of the bamboo leaves as it sways in the breeze is very relaxing. besides making my room cooler because of its shade, it provides this very calming sound that is like piped in music that helps in getting me to sleep.

here in the Philippines properties are separated by concrete fences but trees defy property boundaries and concrete fences. actually this ornamental bamboo tree is right above our roof line because our neighbor elevated the natural ground level of their property making their house loom over ours. from my bedroom window the bamboo cannot be seen but only the sound of its leaves can be heard. to be able to see the bamboo i would have to get out of the house and walk a few distance to see it.

I've never heard bamboo leaves. I've not had a tree close to my window in this house. That's actually good, because when I have had trees close, the owls would get in them and when they would hoot right next to my window it was really loud. Now the owls are farther away and their sound is almost soothing.

The way to get past that is to remember something else that you know by heart and repeat it in your mind. Or try the old sheep counting trick. I prefer to count my blessings, and that usually puts me to sleep in a great state of mind.
