Positive & Negative Online Communities - Thoughts?

I am a member of two online writing communities where I earn from articles that I write. Both sites are a lot of fun to use and each has its own forum. I have found that on one site, users are REALLY mean and ugly to each other. On the other site, the forums are pleasant and the users are nice and helpful.
The administration on both sites don't really seem to get involved in the forum communities, so I don't think it has to do with the site owners.
What are your thoughts? What could account for such negativity and purely hate-filled comments on one site, whereas the other one is really friendly?

there are positives to the online communities. communication is one of the biggest and now a days even knowledge share is one big thing. personally i have benefited a lot in my photography skills with the help of facebook and i feel that people with positive intention can get lot of advantages from online communities. but yes, i would also agree that most of the time people waste time there doing chit chat etc which are not so very useful way of spending time.

It may be the topics of the forums and the communities that bring out the worst in people. Or they feel pressured if they are not earning as much as they think they should. I have heard of one site that is basically paying its members to flag each other, well that just brings out the worst in people, and reduces them to tattle tales. I like when a site has lots of positive members.
