Ah okay, so i was just talking to a friend about a relationship problem and as we chat the topic becomes lighter and we started joking about the usual break up lines used and abused. We wonder, how come guys, or even girls (of course) would use such lines that its not you, and the problem is me sort of thing... hehe well and we did try to thing why would we do this, why say its not us when the truth is that we actually meant they are not enough for us, hence we are leaving them or we have found someone else... right? so why can't we just be direct? any thoughts, ideas on this?

I think that is because the person saying that line doesn't want the other person to get hurt even more. Maybe the one saying it is ready to move on with his/her life without his/her current gf/bf and he/she doesn't want that person to be hurt and even feel more pain if he/she lets him/her realize that he/she is just not enough for the other.

Breaking up is not easy but awkward. So, we tend to say that to put the person's ego at peace or make it less emotional to the one we are dumping.

I think most people try to hurt the other person's feelings as little as possible. a break up is already an awkward situation to be in, it would only be more so if the other person gets upset and so, for self-preservation, people try to console the dumpee. I do agree that we should try to tell the truth however, sort of like constructive criticism, it might help them in future relationships, but you have to be careful not to be too harsh and just start listing their flaws. I think it's just a way to break it off easy. Some people don't always understand that it just isn't meant to be sometimes or they get too attached to a person when you aren't. And being direct would only hurt the other person's feelings or make them think that they're is something wrong with the way they are. So, when you dump someone it's a nice way of letting them off the hook without being as hurt or without them trying to change themselves just to stay with you.
