Are you a wise spender?

After reviewing my card expenses I just realized that I am not a wise spender. Although I only used my card for small expenses. I never noticed that it had already accumulated in a large amount. Last night I began tracking my expenses so that I wouldn't commit the same mistakes again. Do you consider yourself a wise spender or a compulsive shopper?

I use my card to book my plane tickets to have a discount. Since I started to have one, I only use it thrice for shopping. I always use cash to shop. One thing is, I only buy what I need and not what I see that is on sale. I can proudly say that I am a wise spender. I spend for things I need no matter what is the price because it is budgeted. I think managing my resources properly contributed a lot to being a wise spender. Projecting things to be bought, places to go and allot a specific amount for it seems to do me good. I never give to sale items that are not in my list of things to buy even if they are very attractive.

Good for you janevi. I hope that I can over come my problem on giving in to impulse buying. Although it is not on everything I like, I usually impulse buy on gadgets or camera equipment. I guess this two are just my weaknesses and I should really learn to control it. Maybe I could try your method and project the items that I like to buy and save for those items instead of using my card.

I'm an impulsive buyer. I buy on impulse. Even if I have a budget, I give myself loads of reasons why I shouldn't buy it, but I still do. haha. I think it's a sickness already!

I used to be an impulsive buyer until I made a decision that I should sleep on something before buying it. Most of the time though I still end up buying the stuff.hehehe

me too. No amount of rationalizing can stop me from buying something that I really want. That's why as a precaution, I don't got to stores on payday!

Hi there Andyvil I am not really very good with money, if I have some 'spare' I will spend it but it's not usually on myself, my kids normally benefit from it. There have been times when I have had to take a calculator to the supermarket with me because I only had so much money on me and could not overspend as I had no more money. I recently has some good luck with money and spent some of it but put the rest in the bank where it is out of sight out of mind, hopefully and I will try not to spend it! hahahaha

I believe nothing is wasted if you spend it on your kids. They are the only reason why people with kids strive hard to earn more so they can provide more for their kids. Anyway thanks for responding to my discussion.

I try to be, but honestly I do not think I am. Money is still very tight and I do everything I can to help bring home extra money. But with the cost of food and going to Wal-Mart to buy it, it's crazy! I love Wal-Mart, but I hate going there because they get most of our money.

That is exactly why I rarely go to the mall if I don't have anything to buy there. If ever I do go to the mall I only bring limited cash and leave my credit cards at home.

If I were to lose my job right now, I guess I will definitely be forced to live a lifestyle within my income. As of now I am spending more then my income since I know I can pay my bills within a month or two. I really should start saving and lower my unnecessary expenses.

Hi Andyvil I am a wise spender too when I am out I don't think of anything. The thing I want I buy that instead of giving about the money thought because it gives happiness to me. And I have the bad habit of always buying the good quality thing I do not like cheap products. But sometimes cheap products are also good. Some cheap products are more good than the high priced products.

I am really not particular with the price or brand of the product. If the product is worth the money I will buy it. My problem right now is I spend a lot on things that I really don't need. I need to regulate it since I have wasted a lot of money in those things. I have bought gadgets wherein I only used them for awhile and it ended accumulating dust in the closet.

I think I'm a wise spender regarding credit cards. I treat them as debit cards, entering purchases in my checking account register just as I would a debit purchase. When the bill comes I add those expenses up and treat them as a deposit. Then I write the check to pay the bill. This way I always know how much money I really have in the bank. I pay off my card in full every month and earn cash back on my purchases so they are actually paying me to use the card and they earn nothing from me.

I think we don't have the same setup here in my country. It would be great if our banks here would pay us back if we paid early on our credit card bills. The only thing our banks here gives us are reward points which is way lower than the interest I am paying when I don't pay my card bills in full. I am currently monitoring my expenses on my card and have cut down using it unless it is necessary. After I pay all my credit card debts I will only use it for emergency use so that I won't end up paying for the interest of my bills again.

Is it wise to buy this? - Expensive Hermes Bag
Yes, I believe I am a wise spender. Although I love to shop I shop wisely. I don't just buy things if I don't need them. I always have a list and will not go beyond my budget. also, I don't buy very expensive items. I'd rather just take advantage of the SALE most of the time. I also don't ever spend for very expensive items like Hermes bag and all. I have few signature items but those are just gifts from my husband and from my husband. I always believe that there is not much in the brand. If I could get cheaper brand of one with good design and color then why not. For as long as the item does not look cheap, I will always go for it.

I just recently started saving again. Even though I still have some bills to pay I always save about 10% of my income in my bank. By the end of the year I will transfer my savings into a mutual fund or trust fund. I just recently realized that seeing my savings grow made me want to save more. I just hope I won't be tempted in using my savings on buying some gadgets.hehehe

I am now a wise spender, but only because I was really really stupid before. Like you I had an "OH WOW!" moment when I discovered how much I was spending on stupid things. I discovered I spent 18% of my monthly income on carbonated drinks. Specifically Coke. It amounted to roughly $4,000 USD a year. Now I drink ice tea. About $40 a year. Ever since then, I do a budget every month, and track how much I spend on absolutely everything. And now I have MONEY IN THE BANK! Oh yeah! Loving having money. It's a good feeling.

Most of my expenses are on buying photography equipment where in which most of the items I bought were really not useful to me. I only bought them since I was curious or was just fooling myself that I needed it. Although I still have some remaining bills to pay on my credit card I am already starting to save some of my income in the bank. Seeing my bank account grow made me want to save more. I am planning in investing my money on trust funds, mutual fund or high yield time deposits by the end of the year. I really hope that I won't be tempted again to spend my savings this December.hehehe

If I go out for shopping then I really need to shop something even if of a very low price. If I don't have money at all, I simply do not go out for shopping. But when I have money, I must restrain myself to what I really need. I think twice or even more before buying things. Shopping is a very pleasant way of spending time and money but I know how to be within the money possibilities.

I was a compulsive shopper before. But i learned my lesson after having a big amount in credit debt. Now, i only buy through credit card when it is for a big appliance or a big material, which i could pay in full after a month. That way, i don't have to pay for too many charges.

That is exactly what I hate about credit cards. I can't stand looking at those charges when I could have saved all those instead.

i am college-goer now, so in addition to the tuition, i have a monthly payment for my telephone fee, transportation fare, dining fee and put aside some for rainy day. so a clever spender is necessary, less money for more comfortable life on campus.

Back in college I was also a wise spender, but as my income increased I began spending on things that I usually would just ignore. Anyway I am planning to change all of that and I have been applying some solutions for me to prevent unnecessary expenditures.

well i wont say that im wise spender .. but the person who will be staying with me would definately say this .. the reason is that sometimes i spend money so wisely ,, but still i dont say my self wise because sometimes your budget is too low and you have to do shopping according to it . so thatsywhy i would say myself intelligent spender rather than wise spender ,, laughing out loud ..

I am in-between. Mind you I use my card for everything but I find that sometimes I am very careful, but sometimes I go on a spending spree. The latter usually happens as I buy something that I need like getting the TV fixed and then because I fixed it, the furnace starts to leak. It could be anything. If it were because I bought the whole set of dvds for whatever show I like, ti would be a different story. I can accept that, but things going wrong because I repaired one thing is bad and also if I decide to upgrade the house or fix things, I feel that well anyone else can budget for repairs and are not made to feel guilty. Then I start to spend.

I think I am. Before I had a car, I can manage to save up even on my small income. But when I got my car, bye bye savings! All my money pretty much goes to my gas money. So I started commuting again so I can save a little. I don't really consider myself a compulsive shopper, although sometimes I slip up and buy the things that I really, really like.

In the past, I haven't been a wise spender. Now I am forced to be a more wise. My husband lost his job in 2008 and I also didn't work. After that happened we are slowly pulling ourselves out of credit card debt. My husband is working somewhere else making better money now. We were able to have a small savings to help with emergency repairs, which we had to dip into this month.

I think I am a wise spender. When I go to groceries to buy I only buy things I need. Also when I buy stuff on the mall I check first if there are cheaper alternatives before I buy.If there are cheaper brands I go for them, but I still consider quality..

I am a wise spender when it comes to garments and food. The only time I become an unreasonable spender is when I am spending on gadgets. I buy gadgets that I really don't need and sometimes I buy gadgets that I really don't want. I have also learned my lesson on purchasing cheaper alternatives and eventually buying the expensive item in the end. As of now I have decided to use my head in purchasing new items. So far I haven't made any dumb purchases.hehehe
