Sadie hound has a cough. It happens in the morning, can't feel it in her lungs, and she has no fever, eating well and still very active. I can't afford to get her to the Vet for a week or two, unless it's urgent. Could this be allergy? Any experience with this type of thing? Please let me know what you think?

dogs experiences allergies also like us, usually on foods, for me as long as your dog active and doing things what she usually do its ok but make sure that when you noticed something that is unusual it is better to bring her to the vet..

Apparently, dogs and cats can get cold and flu just like we, humans do. Hopefully, she will feel better soon.

Animals get allergies as badly as people do and I have heard that this is a bad year for allergies. If all of her functions are normal I think you are safe to wait. If she eats, drinks and poops and plays she should be fine. If it gets worse, I would worry.

Dogs can have allergies. I had a dog that was very allergic to fleas, and she needed treatment for the rest of her life. It doesn't sound urgent to me, but by all means take her to the vet in a week or two if it doesn't clear up. My mini fox terrier has an occasional cough, which has never amounted to anything so I haven't taken her to the vet. Has your dog been vaccinated? I know Kennel cough can be a problem here, but don't know how prevalent it is in the US?

Dogs do get allergies, just like us. Here in Ohio allergy season is pretty bad right now. I don't know about where you live but people here are sneezing, coughing and going about teary-eyed right now. You can give Sadie 1/2 of a Benedryl and see if it relieves her cough. I sometimes give generic Benedryl to Gus and Cookie when they get allergy symptoms, which is not often but it really helps them. Depending on her weight, of course. 1/2 for dogs under 40 pounds, a whole one for 45 or more. I got this info from a vet years ago. He also told me to hold a jar of Vicks (or generic) under a dog's nose to clear their sinuses. They'll only take one sniff but that's enough.

Our pets can have allergies just like we do. I would ask first, however, is she current with her immunizations? Some of the doggie diseases start with cough, as distemper comes to mind. Cough is also a symptom of other issues. A change in the weather and the high pollen and ragweed counts could be having some affect too. If you do use the Benedryl and she isn't relieved, I think you should get her to the vet.

I have had dogs for a few years now. Seems like I'm always learning now things about them, but you've been given some great advice. I've seen things in my two puppies that sometimes concerns me, but if you wait it out and your Sadie is still healthy and active, then no harm done. You know her well, so you'd be able to tell if something is weird. I noticed my little puppy (she is a terrier mix and only about 25 lbs.) has been coughing a lot more than usual this year too. I worried that maybe it was due to heartworm or something (because if they cough frequently enough, I read somewhere that could be symptoms of that), but I really don't think it's an issue unless it continues through to the fall/winter seasons. Keep an eye on her, but if it goes away then you know you did the right thing for her. I know what you mean about expensive vet bills and such. Thankfully for me, my husband and I found an inexpensive vet called 'All About Animals.' It's more like a charity almost for those who don't have a lot of money to spend on their pets. You have to pay cash, but it's $10 and $15 per shot, flea or heartworm pill, etc. It's very reasonable. My youngest puppy who I told you about earlier was fixed at fourth months old for only $80! I know that probably sounds like a lot of money still, but not when it's normally over $100 to have that done (and more as the dog gets older). If you want to see if there's one in your area, you can go to http://www.allaboutanimalsrescue.org/. Actually, now that I'm looking at the site, it looks like this AAA is local, but you may be able to find others in your area. Hope this helps and sure hope Sadie feels better soon!

I'm sorry to hear Sadie has a cough. I hope by the time I write this message she got rid of it. The most silly thing that I heard about dog coughing was "they cough because of worms". I found it very amusing but then I informed myself and I found out it was true. So maybe you would like to check her deworming calendar to see if you're late with it. Another reason of dog cough may be a heart disease. I have a friend who's Poodle had such heart cough. He was put on the proper medication and he stopped coughing. If Sadie don't stop coughing, you should better try to take her to the vet to find out the reason of her coughing and to be given the proper treatment. I hope she will be well soon.

how old is the dog? and what breed is the dog? older dogs sometimes cough because the trakea (windpipe) partially collaspes causing them to cough this mostly happens with dogs that are usually chained up or from years of pulling on their leash when taken for a walk this happens more often in smaller dogs for they are weaker and more fragile than larger dogs if she is a younger dog she may have boardetella also known as kennel cough this is a highly contagious disease and could be life threatening and she will need to see a vet right away a vet is the only one that could positively diagnose if it is boardetta or not YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE A DOG IF YOU CAN NOT AFFORD TO FULLY CARE FOR IT good luck

The fact that we are ranchers means that we do most of our own Vet work, minor illness is taken care of here by us. We are also reluctent to take our small animals to the Vet's office where they are often exposed to illness they would never encounter on the ranch. The main reason I started this discussion ws to get other's imput on the cough, and that is what I got. So until the cough got worse I felt a short wait, 2 or 3 days would not hurt, but as soon as the cough got worse Sadie was taken into the Vet, she is under treatment and is already responding. She has bronchitis. People who have animals, who cannot afford them is a pet peeve of mine, but I also want to use common sense when involving the Vet. Like everyone else in the animal care situation, we are finding it more and more expensive to feed and care for them. So the fact of the matter is whatever money we spend must be spent wisely. The only other answer is to put all these creatures down, it's a nasty trap that no one expected when we got the animals. We have not bred for many years and now just have senior animals to care for, the Llamas each live about 20 years and we want those to be healthy years. Thanks for your response, I felt your anger and was glad you experssed it.
