I got a cat hair where???

Okay, you guys know I've got a LOT of cats. However, the thing I'm going to talk about happened actually more often when I only had 6 AND it happened to my mother when she only had ONE! (but she walked barefoot inside the house.) So, This happened the first time when Maggie and I were roommates. I can't remember if it were me or Maggie, honestly, its been too many years... However, it felt like I had gotten a splinter of glass in my foot (or her foot). Lets remember this is like 30 years ago... Anyway, which ever one it wasn't finally got down there and looked and there, in the foot, was a thin, fine, strand of cat fur. That person grabbed it with a pair of tweezers and pulled it out. It didn't hurt coming out, but it was like the glass shard was gone when weight was put on the foot. So, over the years, maybe as much as once, but more likely less than, one of us got a fur in the soul of our foot. Then, one day I was at my mom's and she said she thought she had stepped on a bit of glass. Now, like I am now, my mother couldn't get the bottom of her foot up close enough to see with her glasses on. So, she put her foot up and I looked. Sure enough, a tiny, fragile bit of cat fur, in her foot. Now, what brings this up today? Did I get another one? Well, yes and no. I felt this pain in my wrist. I looked and there, right where the wrist joins the hand, was a fuzzy black bit of cat fur. Not having a tweezer near at hand, I grabbed a needle nose pliers from my jewelry making stuff and carefully pulled it out. Mind you, the fur was in my right hand so I was pulling it out with my left hand. So, of course, now that I've told you about this its going to happen, but maybe it has happened to you in the past? Have you ever gotten cat fur in you skin like this?

Wow I would never have thought that a cat whisker was sharp enough to feel as if it was a piece of glass. Interesting and wondering if at times when I have felt like something was there and take a look to not visibly see a thing. Though I do not own a cat just wondering if something like a string and or thread could also do the same. I will take a closer look next time something feels foreign on my foot.

Sometimes a tiny tiny item will bruise your foot, and it will be so irritating, but then you cannot find anything like a splinter to remove.

This really interesting to me as I have felt like there was something there at times and after diligent probing could not find anything. So I wonder if the probing it causes it to somehow loosen and or maybe I saw a fine hair and did not relate that to it had being there. Interesting.

It could be, that's pretty much how I discovered it the first time, a piece of fine hair that would NOT be brushed away, in fact, returned to the same place

To my knowledge, no, I have not had that happen. I did have a friend who posts both here and on another site who developed foot pain while out shopping and it was so bad it made her limp. When she got home to examine her foot she found a thread wrapped around her toe. Having just read her post recently, I expected you to tell me that you had cat fur twisted around your toe, as well. This is even more odd. I could imagine a whisker doing that, but not regular fur.

not even feeler hairs, the finest of the fine hair are the guilty ones! I mostly get mine in my heels or balls but I have gotten it once in the arch, and they all feel like a shard of glass!

Can't say as I have, nor have I ever heard of anyone else having this happen (before now). You sure do come up with some Twilight Zone stuff.

That story is unbelievable, but I'm glad to know of the possibility. I'll be sure to check for cat hair whenever one of us has the feeling that they've stepped on something sharp.

Never, but I have heard that if a hair follicle is alive, it will burrow into your skin and try to grow there, but will most likely just get infected. I think this can happen with any type of hair, which is why doctors recommend always wearing either socks or flip-flops if you are on a floor where a lot of hair is present

Yes, I've had this happen before and it's even worse with dogs. A friend of mine worked at a dog grooming salon and after her first couple weeks had what looked like a pimple on her shoulder. It ended up being a huge piece of dog hair that had gotten embedded in her skin and infected.

Yikes! I guess I have a lower threshold of pain, as soon as they hit the pain nerve, I'm getting those things OUT!

Well uuh yes, I actually have several times. I've gotten them in my foot. I have 3 dogs, use to be 4. You are right it feels like a shard of glass in the foot. It hurts like crazy until you get it out.

Yes, it is and it's amazing how far in there they go. You just can not pull them out with your fingers. I've tried and it don't work. Simply amazing!

I do not have any pets so this has not happened to me. However, I found this topic interesting because I did not know this happens. Have you tried wearing socks or slippers around the house? Maybe this will help. Good luck!

I never go barefoot, and these furs generally got in my foot with socks on, tho the others did/do go barefooted - but in my wrist??? that was just STRANGE!

Sounds so painful! Just be glad you catch them before they get infected. I know you love your cats and this is just something you have to put up with. I bet they love you too! I wish I could get one but my husband is allergic.

I think I might have once, but I'm not sure. I do remember the feeling of a shard of glass in my foot or the like but it not being that. It's odd that a cat's fur could hurt like that, but I guess it's the small folicle in a small pore that makes it hurt. I love when i have something like that that hurts, I pull it out and it feels much better!

That is so true! The kicker about the cat fur is that it doesn't hurt ALL the time, just suddenly and only when you maybe put the weight on it right....

of the many years i owned cats, id never noticed that. but i do know that often hair dressers get hair under their skin and was told by one friend, a hair dresser, that their main concern is knowing that some have gotten lung cancer from it in their lungs. which makes me wonder sometimes if i could be breathing coco hairs from my little girl here. since she seems to shed a new coco ever day. her hair is every where, let me tell you. but i love her to much to let her go. lol

if you are brushing her or even petting the fur out it doesn't seem as bad as just the stuff that falls on the floor gee, I never would've thought that hair dressers worry about hair in their lung! I wonder if that's why dentists are wearing masks to keep the tooth dust from getting in their lungs...

Wow your cats must have some thick fur. I have never had this happen, and never heard about it, but from reading the other posts, I guess it happens a lot and I have just been lucky.

I have two cats living inside my house 24/7 and, although they do shed hair almost anywhere especially in the summer time; I have not experienced fur on my skin like that. I did have a cat bite on one of my fingers which became badly infected once. It interesting that you should get fur in your skin like splinters. I’ll keep an eye out…

I haven't had a cat hair in my skin but I was talking to a hair stylist one day and she was telling me how aggravating it was to get a hair stuck in your skin. She says that it will actually grow if you don't get it out!!! I don't know if I buy that but I bought that it was like a splinter when she told me that. I had never thought of a hair being like a splinter.

someone else mentioned that if the hair had a live follicle it would try to grow - that's scary!

The closest thing I have in my repertoire of stories that even comes close to this is when I got some fiberglass fibers in my bed and was itching like crazy. I was about six or seven at the time and my mother had me climb into her bed while my dad slept in my bed...and then he started itching! But fiber is fiber and any kind of fiber can work its way into the skin. Some fibers are more irritating than others, of course, which is why I refuse to use wool when I crochet. Still, in over fifty years of living with animals, I have never had this happen to me. Interesting...verrrry interesting!

oh yeah, fiberglass is notorious! I remember a gal from elementary school who couldn't touch their curtains because they were fiberglass - I mean - WHO puts up fiberglass curtains?
