I first read 'To Kill a Mockingbird' when I was in seventh grade, after discovering it in a box of book's that my mum's friend had given me. I read it several times throughout the years and was ecstatic when I was required to read it for my College English III class in high school.
What excited me more was that I was watching the movie one day and my 10-year-old daughter came in, sat down with me, and took actual interest in the film. She asked a lot of questions so that she could grasp an understanding, and the next day, I discovered her attempting to read my copy of this favorite novel. I was ECSTATIC!
I've read the novel at least 20 times and I hope that in a couple of years, my copy will still be available to pass on to my daughter.
How many times have you read the book and have you shared its story with your children?

Well, I just finished college and I don't have a child yet. However, I also have read it for 5 times at least. I took it in high school for the whole trimester, so I was really attached to it. I love Harper Lee's symbolism and how I could understand it because I actually read it! (My classmates were too eager to be spoonfed with the facts.)
I'm glad that you and your daughter could spend time together reading and discussing it, for it is after all, a family story. However, I think the book is a little deep for a ten-year old.

When you're 10 years old and already had to face the reality of being a target of racism and having family members murdered, there's very little that's too deep.

Does she? Where are you from? I'm surprised to hear that, with all the efforts of UN nowadays. I thought people of this generation have better understood and respected racial differences.

The book holds a special place in my academic life, it was one of the first books I had to read for high school lit and one that I really really enjoyed, which in turn made me love the subject and I ended up majoring in it. I love the characters and story, it evoked quite a few emotions as I was reading it, I remember not paying attention to the class and reading ahead of the teacher or re-reading favourite scenes. If I have children in the future I'll definitely share it with them! There's lots of life lessons and great quotes to be taken from it. I wish Harper Lee had written more stories!

This book means a great deal to me. I chose it on a stack of books my dying great aunt offered me one of. I watch the movie every time it is on and enjoy it over an over. I have so many favorite scenes and my favorite character is Bu. It is such a great story about growing up and racial indifference of the times.
