What do you think of self check out lanes that some stores have. Do you love them, like them, hate them what. I'm not sure what I think about them. I use them sometimes, and sometimes not. What do you think?

To be honest I have only used them a few times. The first time I used one it was complicated. If you didn't put your items in certain spot it didn't ring the item up. Also, you can't put much on the counter if you have more than just a few things and this gets hairy if you still have stuff in buggy to check out, but need the buggy to put checked out items into also. Another time I used it the scanner didn't work properly and wouldn't pick up the upc numbers. Annoying! Also, if you need help you have to wait for the manager or whoever is in charge to come clear up the problem so this doesn't make checking out any faster in my opinion. I think I've had bad first experiences and have just learned to let the cashier take control of my purchases :).

That's true. Although, the way the computers are programmed now, you rarely have slip ups on coupons. When I have trouble with coupons, it is because the cashier is too dumb to understand what the coupon says. I just love having to dig out a product with a basket of bagged items to show a cashier that I did buy the item in question. Grrr!

Yeah, if you mess something up on the self checkout, you do have to wait for someone to fix it. And if there are 2 on the fritz, then that is more waiting. I'm like you, I want the cashier to control my purchases too. Especially if I have coupons.

I don't like self checkout lanes and refuse to use them for a couple of reasons. One is that I pay for a checker when I pay the mark up price for groceries. Do you get a discount when you do the checking yourself? Of course not. You're working for free and the grocery store is making money. Secondly, self checkout lanes replace real, live people who need jobs to get by on. Our unemployment rate is painful, so I will not support any technology that takes more jobs away.

You know you bring up a good point. You don't save by using the self check out. The cost is just the same isn't it? I had never thought of that. Some stores you get cheaper prices because you bag things yourself. We need cheaper prices for self check out too.

I have used them at Walmart when I don't have any produce to weight and they are okay.still not my first choice but if it's extremely busy I'll go through one.

Not my first choice either unless I only have 2 or three items. If I have more than that, I get annoyed and just rather wait for a cashier. At our local Walmart, it just as long to wait for a live person than it is to go to self checkout so it's not really faster.

I hate them. First...you are taking someone's job from them. Most stores have 4 or more and one person standing there to "help" customers. THat means that 3 people are out of a job because of these "self help" lines. YOu have to do the work yourself and don't get paid for it and you have taken a job from someone. Plus...I already have to pay the high food prices...now I have to do the work too? Not me. If I am going to pay the high prices, I am going to have the work done for me. Plus...to many people going through those self check out lines...means more the opportunity for stealing your pin numbers or other access to your debit/credit card. No, some things are better left alone. An automated world is not a very nice place to be, I don't think! And if you have problems with this checkouts...you have ato stand and wait till someone comes to help and half the time I hear complaints about problems and "didn't do this" from the users while I am standing in line...and half hte time...nearly done with my check out in the same time they are done checking themselves out.

I do not care for them. Unless I literally have one thing. I usually end up needing someone to reset the machine or have something that needs a clerk to accept anyway. Plus my big one for not liking them as a cashier myself it's taking a job away from someone.

From a cashier's point of view They are simple to use for me becasuse I know how to use most of them, especially the ones at my own store. I know it's a bit difficult for those who aren't cashiers or have never used a cash register, especially if they've never worked with produce as it can be difficult (you have to enter in the plu's for it). We have people who stand by to help, and that makes it easier, but they are also usually the same people who have to provide the cashiers with an over ride etc, so they aren't always there to help. I think they are much easier, especially if you only have a few things and don't want to wait in line.

I agree if you have something go wrong which everytime I'm at the store I see some poor customer looking at the thing like it's from Mars, I think this isn't easier at all. I used one when I had a bunch of coupons, not good. I won't do that again. I prefer live people but when shopping with my daughter "she" prefers the self service one.

I used them just once and that was because I had wanted to avoid the long lineups. So, I took a few items out with the self check out and managed to breeze past those who were in line and I was glad, not to mention it was faster as a paying option. But I have also thought of the chances of me getting an error then, like 'what if' something went wrong. I don't know if I will use the self check out lane again for my shopping. I think I will only use that if I have to avoid lineups with just an item or two in hand.
