Having more than one vehicle

Do you think it is a good idea? People have told me no,that is another object that you have to maintain and pay taxes on and it is a bad idea,if there is only one driver in the household to have more than one car. But,my opinion is what if I am running out to get somewhere really important that I can not reschedule or be late to.Like a concert, school event, sports event, wedding, funeral, party or other event that will go on without me and my car does not start. Then I can jump in the other one and get to my event! And call for repairs on the broke one from my cell phone, when I get back or tomorrow. What do you think?

I think it's always nice to have two cars, if you can afford it. It's nice to a back up, or maybe one small car and one van or SUV for family outings.

Hubby always says if you drive old cars you need at least one spare. However, he would have several spares if I left it up to him. You know how women like to have shoes for every occasion, well, he likes to have a vehicle for every occasion. If you do not have a way to get rides and your vehicles are older and not expensive for tags and taxes then a spare may be the way to go. You have to look at your budget.

It is good to have a spare even if your car is new thou.

Hi dfollin! I definitely agree with you, it is better (and costly though) to have 2 cars if you could afford it. It will be convenient to have 2 cars in your garage, one for your everyday use (one that is economical) and another for emergency purposes like the one you have mentioned. Though this means additional expenses in maintaining the other car, I think it will be compensated when it serve its purpose. Here in my country where a number coding scheme is being used to lessen the everyday traffic, it is a must to have another car that you could use if you're car is on coding (the last number of your plate number have a corresponding restriction day). Have a nice day!

Number Coding Scheme sounds like a great idea, but what if you have to get to work, take the kids to school or the doctor? What if you have an emergency?

I don't like carpooling because what if you had a family emergency, having to take a kid or elderly parent to the hospital.

That's why most of the rich people have at least 2 available cars in their garage, so that whenever the car is on coding, they could use the other one. Others use the carpool method (share a ride with their coworkers) so that they could still go to office. I believe that traffic enforcer would also be compassionate and allowed cars with emergency cases to pass through even if they are on coding.

I think if both people in the family drive yes by all means then you need 2 cars.Especially if kids are involved what if something happened and one of the kids got sick.

Exactly!I know a woman that was a single parent and she took a job about 75 miles away from her home and was going to take a public train that only runs during rush hour. And I asked her where her family was and she said in another state.I also asked her, what will you do if the school calls and need you to come get the kids?

Wow this woman must have been desperate for a job but she should have used her brain especially going that far away for a job. You are so right what if she needed to pick up her kids she would really be hurtin if she needs to get there to pick one of her kids up.

If you know how to maintain a car then it will never break down. I own three cars and it's very expensive to maintain them, parts are expensive, change oil, gas and of course insurance and taxes. So now that i bought a new car i'm planning to sell the other two.

I think I'd just sell one of them because, my luck, it would break down the next day.

My husband and I don't even have one vehicle!! We are both legally blind, and do not drive. He did drive before he lost his sight, so we did have one at the time. Now, if we both had better vision, and we both had jobs that were in different places, children, and other reasons why we both needed to use the car at once, we would have two cars, otherwise not everyone needs two cars. God knows, not everyone needs one car.

I know what you mean,I do not even have one car and where we live there is very limited public transportation and I have places to get to and take my daughter to school and events.Take my mom and uncle to run errands as well as my own errands. And get my granddaughter for church on Wednesday's and Sunday's.And myself to church on some Thursday's and Saturday's too.

I don't think I would want a second car even if there were the possibility of the one I have breaking down. I think it would be better to call a taxi than to have to pay the extra expenses of maintaining and insuring a second vehicle in order to have a backup if I were the only driver.

I think that some people need more than one vehicle, for example if both of the adults in the family have full time jobs that they have to travel to, then it might be something that is needed. However, for a lot of people who have two or more cars, it just isn't needed, and they find that one of them will just sit on the drive for most of the time without them even moving from their space. You should think about whether you truly need the vehicle that you want to own, because it's very expensive just to own as a fashion statement.

Really,I know a couple has kids, but 4 cars and we had no car. When my husband was sick he needed to get to the doctor and we had other errands to run.We wanted to buy one of those vehicles on a payment plan from them and they wouldn't sell it to us.

If you live in a rural area or a place with little public transportation, a second backup car is a good idea or you could be stranded - literally.

Maybe 2 cars are enough. I got 2 cars at home and i vehicle for me that works great because if the other one doesnt work there is an option to use the second one. And like for example you going to a market or any crowded places there you have a vehicle one that can give you a chance to make your transportation fast.

I think now a days because of hike in petrol it is not at all desirable to have more than one car unless and until it is very much necessary. And if you are able to afford more than one please go ahead. Because after all this is a question of individual's importance's, likings and capacity to afford.
