You know the signals of your mobile phone changes depending on the location (3G, 3.5G etc) right? What does the "E" signal mean? Is it error?

That's a really good question. My phone used to have that signal a lot. Sometimes I would even get this weird "o" signal which I have no idea what it means.

That's even weirder, an "O" signal. Wow! Are you in a remote area? It might be Oh No Signal! Just kidding! :)

It seemed to only get that signal when I was away at college last year on the west coast of my state. I guess that area didn't really get good att signal because I got E and o a lot. Now that I'm back home I don't get those signals, only if att goes out in my area.

E means 'EDGE' . Its a pre-3G technology actually. It stands for Enhanced Data Rates for GSM evolution . EDGE can carry a bandwidth up to 236.8 kbit/s. EDGE is four times as efficient as GPRS.

Whoa! So, EDGE is actually an acronym of something. Pretty fascinating information I'm getting here. Imagine from not knowing what that signal is, I now know what E stands for and what EDGE stands for. Good job mylotters! Thanks!

It could mean "EDGE". Before 3G came out, EDGE was what some of the wireless carriers were using. It's 2nd generation high speed mobile internet hook up. It's slower than 3G but it's fast enough to do most of the things we are doing today. 3G basically do them faster.

That makes sense. Thanks. I thought it stands for error which I don't understand because I am able to browse even with that signal on.

Yes E symbol represents which means edge network simply known as 2G network before 3G. As old phones are having G symbol which means GPRS. After when its switch to 2G network .

the E signal on your phone means you are on edge network which is also knows as 2g or 2.5g . Its speed is two times the speed of gprs.

Nice additional information. Now I know I'd rather have the E signal than the normal GPRS.
