My eldest daughter utilises her fabulous talent to make celebration cakes for many people. She makes cakes for weddings, birthdays, anniversary's etc.
While I think these cakes are truly beautiful, I wonder what happened to the traditional candles in birthday cakes - especially for children's cakes.
Modern birthday cakes tend to be themed (like this latest helicopter cake that she has just finished) and have no space for candles, what do you think? Would you prefer a themed cake like this or a traditional one with candles?

Hi Friend,
There are many people who love to have candles on their B'day cakes. I don't like to have any (Who Want to have 25+ candles on B'day cakes lol!!) as they do not good to me. And Sometime mix with cake to make its look bad. lol...

Wow that is such a lovely cake. Your daughter is truly talented. In cakes like that, putting in a candle would really hurt me, even cutting it! The last time we bought cake was of a cat. It was so cute I didn't wanna eat t at all. It was so perfect. But we did eat it LOL
And I am ok with any cake, candle or not. But i do anyhow light candles on my birthday, even if they are not on the cake, just at the side :)

I think that candles shaped into numbers are a good idea. By using them, the birthday cake won't be covered by a bunch of candles and you can still have a themed cake for your birthday.

I think it really does not matter. It is just a meaning that for each year, a candle is represented, by its being lighted. I think I am not really that into cakes anyway.

I prefer cakes without candles because it's clean to look at and sanitary too. When a kid with a colds and flu will blow the candle, the virus will be transferred to the cake and thus this will be the start of an outbreak. LOL just kidding maybe outbreak is so exaggerated. But I think you get what I mean. Better to make cakes as simple as they can be.

for me the most important thing is not the cake.
it's enough if someone shake my hand and tell happy birthday to me.
but if somebody come to me and bring a birthday cake of course i will accept it.
with candle or not it doesn't matter, but i prefer with no candle.

Dear friend, I always used to prefer it without candles. I mean since the time, I developed my senses. Reason is why some petrochemical should directly contaminate my food?
But honestly, I always failed to communicate my thoughts, and surrendered to traditional public will -- after all these are entertaining occasions mostly for the guests. I think not keeping candles on cakes is a very good idea.

It is a difficult decision - to candle or not to candle!! This cake is one my daughter made yesterday for an 18th birthday, and yes I can see that candles could take away from the look of the cake - perhaps we should have a small plain cake just for the candles and have the best of both worlds1!

Themed cakes are a great way to showcase one's talents as your daughter does. But I think I'd prefer more cake and candles compared to a fancy themed one. I'd imagine a creation like her's runs alot more than your standard square cake with decorations.

I admire your daughter's skill! I've been dreaming to have baking skills but not yet very successful. Maybe someday when I devote enough time in studying then I could be the best baker in town.
Now for a birthday cake, I still prefer one with candles because it is always my delight to make a wish then blow the candles during birthday celebration. I also want my guests to sing birthday song for me after the blowing of candles. It sounds quite childish but honestly I always believe that blowing of candles should always be part of any birthday celebration.

Personally, I prefer my birthday cake to be beautifully decorated, in addition to having candles. There should be a balance.

To me it just isn't a birthday cake without candles to blowout to mark the occasion. You are never too old to blow out the candles on your birthday cake. Admitting the numbe of candles can be the hard part.

Firstly I have seen the photos and have to add that your daughter if very talented. As for themed cakes I find them best for children. However, there can be themed adults cakes too.
I wouldn't mind a plain one and numbered candles would be fine, as somehow I can't see a cake full of loads of candles, there may be a fire with the high numbered ones. lol

The cake is beautiful and you daughter is talented indeed! Coming back to the question - yes, since we are so used to the candles...birthday seems incomplete without it. However, the candles can be placed alongside the cake but, its up to each individuals preferences. I would certainly prefer blowing the candles even if one day I have to blow around 70! :)

In the past I have made similar cakes to these (my daughter took over from my cake making business) when I had placed candles on the cake board; however with so many of Helen' cakes the board is an intrigal part of the cake - as with this one for a Beatles fan, I don't see where she could have placed 65 candles!!

I think a traditional cake(or any chocolate sweet desert) would be fine with me. It seems that so much hard work goes into these beautiful cakes, that it is a shame to actually eat them. The people that make them say: that's what I make them for, but I feel it is sad.

In my family we like candles and thinking up three wishes before blowing them. Even when the child is a baby, we all blow after we sing Happy Birthday.
Once, many years ago, I made a house cake for one of my daughters. Even there, at the top of the roof, there were the candles. I would not feel it was a birthday party without them.

I prefer the traditional one with candles when it's his/her first, 60th birthday something like that, the occasion that needs candle to be blown for a wish or wishes but there are themed cakes that can have candles on it since it will be made personal as to what it should look like for what the celebrants want...stylish, thin candles that can be perfectly match on these themed cakes.
