I recently quit my job to pursure a career in professional writing. Easier said then done!! I am currently working on my first novel and a short story. Is there anyone out there that has had writing work published? Either novels/books, short stories, magazine or news articles, anything! Any advice for someone starting out?
I also write a lot of poetry and am searching online for some place to publish it.
Any advice from writers/editors/publishers or anyone with any type of writing background is welcome to reply!!

That's a brave step, I wouldn't have quit a job to take up writing. I would have done the writting on a part time basis to find my feet and check that I could make a living out of it.
I have had some poems published and this was done because I saw a article in a newspaper about a poetry competition. The publishers then kept in touch with me, inviting me to submit more poems for a book that they publish every year. If you look online for writting competitions this maybe a good starting point.
Also there are online site that allow you to submit creative writting pieces, check out Helium.

I just thought... that Helium advice is excellent, since it's one of the very few places that does revenue share on creative content but (there's always a but) if you're looking to *publish* your work, putting it on Helium makes it already-published, no-longer-unique content. Just something to consider when deciding where to post things.

Very true, Spike. You may want to try and publish your own ebook of poems. That's one place to start.
No experience in the novel area...sorry.
Other places to write are associatedcontent.com, factoidz, triond.com, or reviews at epinons.com or viewpoints.com.

There are a lot of writers here on myLot - a lot of VERY helpful people.
I've been freelancing since November 2008, though nothing as serious as writing novels. Yeah, OK, so I have 4 chapters of one that screams "Finish me!" every time I look in its direction, but don't we all?
I've had a bunch of stuff "published" if you count the web (including web magazines) for which I've been paid but most of my work is either direct-to-client (so it's writing on demand, on their subjects) or a bit of revenue share or something. I maintain a blog about freelancing, so there might be something there of use. I don't know; not without knowing what kind of opinion you're looking for, on what subjects.
Off the top of my head, bits of advice:
- poetry won't pay much because you'll have trouble finding anyone willing to buy it (though someone here has been published in an anthology so there ARE possibilities)
- it's easier to earn money by writing boring stuff to order than it is to get published
- if you want to publish books, never EVER self-pub without employing an actual book editor (i.e. not just an editor like me but someone with a history in BOOK editing, preferably in your niche/style) - otherwise, you're wasting your time and money
- anyone can publish, it's the marketing that counts
- you could join an online community like Authonomy (run by Harper Collins, I think) or Scribophile (independent and one of the most awesomely friendly critiquing places I've ever visited)
- there's a neat post here with five places to sell fiction (not mine, not a referral): http://www.wordophilia.com/five-places-to-sell-your-fiction/
Umm, that's off the top of my head. I'm sure there are specifics people can help you with if you have questions!
Oh, one other thing: don't rush to publish. It's really tempting but it's worth waiting a bit and getting a proper edit, opinion and so on. The world's waited this long for your work, it can wait a little bit longer.
Good luck!

Oh, and visit Writer Beware - an awesome blog by a US Sci-Fi publisher that watches the WHOLE publishing market and warns of scams and stuff. If you can find Miss Snark (a blogger), she runs competitions, critiques and stuff as well: she was an agent for a LONG time (or still is, not sure).

Hi there.
I find your discussion quite interesting because I had written some poems & short stories myself. I've also tried publishing one of these through a local publishing house. But before it gets to be published, they had to review the content if it is worth editing. Unfortunately, my manuscript had been rejected. I guess the story had been too easy. Honestly, I was not satisfied with the plot because in the first place; I only made that story for my youngest female sibling who at that time, was just starting to realize love. Most of the events were suggested by her.
After my unpublished work, I was quite shy to retrieve it. And, I never had the chance to submit my other articles after that.
I do hope that you'll be successful with this new endeavor of yours and I'd like to welcome you here in this wonderful mylot community. 'Til next discussion. Regards.

You could try to publish your novel in ebook format, in Amazon Kindle, you can sell your novel their, they will give you the software you need to publish them in amazon.com, then if you earned from selling your own novel ebooks, you could try in amazon too the published copy of your book in conventional style of book.
