Brain drain due to the internet

Did you know the internet could be causing us to lose our ability to remember facts.
It used to be that if you wanted to check a fact, you'd have to find a book and look it up.
But with the internet even the most obscure information can be checked in seconds.
Researchers think this is too easy for the brain and, without the "workout" of trawling through books, our brains are becoming lazy.
I think this is very true, do you agree with me? What are your views on this subject.

Of course it's true. And not just the internet, but phones that store numbers... no one knows anyone's phone number anymore.

Yes, but now we can trawl online and see all the wonders we want. I really doubt that this is true. There are still some who retain better than other and I doubt it matters where the material comes from. I don't agree with you on this. I am a researcher and I have been able to retain quite alot from the internet.

I am fascinated with serial killers and so I research that alot. Right now I am researching sweetners, second hand smoke, intersex, women's rights, and SAD. Anything that interests me I research.

That's one reason why people ended up being lazy. I read somewhere that this might also be the reason why kids nowadays lacks interest in reading and non-online activities. Internet is indeed useful but people should work their brains out sometimes :) I work in the IT field that's why I tend to rely on the net a lot! As oppose to this, to ensure that my brain's not idle, I continuously read books and love puzzles. I also love reading and doing mystery based books/games/puzzles since it enhances brain activity :)

I thought the internet was increasing our brain power. I think that reading online books is just as much mental exercise as reading a paper book and several studies have shown that playing computer games is good for the brain.
People used to say that using a calculator would hurt our ability to do math, but I don't think that turned out to be true. It does slow down our ability to do math without paper and pencil, but I was never good at that anyway. I think what is important in the long run is being able to get the right answer.

hi anne,
in a way, i think you are right. but then, it could also be the reverse. the brain maybe working so fast because it gets so many things fed into it in so short a time.
drain? hmmm. i guess it is even doing overtime.

Actually, I tend to believe that it is quite the opposite. I think that the fact that most of the facts that we want to know are within the touch of a few fingers gives us the ability to learn far more than we would have ever had the opportunity to have known before the internet was available. I know a lot of things and many of those things are things that I've learned about simply because of the fact that when I had a question I was able to surf for the answer and I retain those things in my memory.

There is a discipline in getting information from the internet. Yes, it is easy to find information but the validity of the data should be analyzed and evaluated. Not all information on the web are valid. One should learn that farther research and referencing is required to ensure its validity.
The brain drain may not be the issue. But the laziness to think and process the information that we get, that's the main issue.
This is a good topic. Congratulations.

i agree to this opinion too, regarding the issue of laziness to think and process information. Even though searching through the Internet is much more convenient than browsing through books, we should still think of Internet as another source of information just like books, and thus we should analyse information that we gather from the internet the same way we do with books and newspapers. In fact, critical thinking is much more important when it comes to information gathering from the Internet, given the nature of the Internet, where anyone can add or edit information online, as such there is no guarantee that all information found on the Internet is definitely accurate.

I very much agree with you. Critical thinking is not so common nowadays with our students and workers. I hope we can do something about it.
Best regards.

I think this is true with every other human body part. If you don't use your hands to lift weights, because a machine does it for you, your hands will lose from their strength.
This must be the process with the mind also. If we use our mind less, it will become lazy, like you said and we will have concentration problems.
An example for how my brain works: When I was in elementary or high school, we had to learn on daily basis, so I had this custom of learning, which made me to have a good memory. I have only read the lesson two times and I knew it.
Now, at the University, I learn only time to time, when I have my exams session and then I find it very hard to concentrate and to memorize the courses.
So I agree with the research results completely.

This was the case with my grandfather, who in his last years was completely "on another planet", if you know what I mean. He was a smart person when younger, but as he hadn't had to do too much when he got old, he became a bit amnesic and his mind hasn't functioned well anymore.

If that's a fact then we have nothing to do about it then for me, I'd be careful of my health now because not only that brains had to workout but the radiation of being in front of a computer for hours will harm. Yet, I'd like to applaud what the internet does. It helps a lot because not every household have a compilation/library of encyclopedias and books to help them learn something right away. Internet helped me with helpful information and tips especially when one in my household gets sick and I needed something to remedy it. In situations like this, immediate researching is needed.

Yes, with the internet available in our home, we can always search for helpful information right away. Same like you, i don't buy many encyclopedias since i don't have a big library at home. So, internet had been a very useful source of information for me.

I actually prefer to use a book if I have the right book around. I have a number of reference books and field guides and gardening books, and cookbooks, etc. I love to read. For me it's easier to reach for a book and keep it open on my desk that to flip between computer windows.

I am so tired of everyone blaming everything on technology. I happen to learn a heck of a lot of facts from the internet and if I do forget, I can easily look it up and be reminded. No, internet doesn't make people's brains lazy; people being lazy, makes their brains lazy.

it depends on what type of activities you do on the Internet. If you play Sudoku or some other games online which require you to exercise your mind, then your brain will still get a good mental workout. For me, I play the online version of Go, which is a traditional Asian board game for those who don't know. It is a very challenging game which requires a lot of calculation and analysis, thus it really works the brain.

During my time, we were so much dependent in using the library. The index cards were in so much use by the students busy looking for their topics or subjects. Researches were all accomplished inside the library of the school and even outside for bigger library of other schools or institutions that can give wider and further information. And so you really can see the effort exerted by students, because before it was a long struggle to accomplish a piece of work. Now, the finger tips are doing the work. Copy, paste, print and then there comes your masterpiece done by others. I remember my son telling me that he has a report to be presented. After few minutes, I asked him if he has done it,he told me "yes". "How come, I have been watching you and you are always in Facebook and Youtube". He answered, "I have it in my USB and will be printed few minutes before the reporting because we have our printer there". Gosh, what a robotic gesture, being dictated by the technology. I am just hoping that the brain will still have its purpose in the future.

what do you suggest then ? Do you know what Newton or einstein would have spen their time in if they had had a computer with access to internet? Probably the world will be different that it could be without it. But the bottomline is that, internet is such a big invention that our life has acquired a new sense, things have been created to make our lives better and smarter.
