In the hope of attracting more people to take an interest in the abandoned kitties in the UK rescue centres, Cats Protection asked the public to suggest names for their moggies.
Surprisingly, food related names were the top from over1,000 people polled, suggesting names like Sushi, Saffron, Pilchard and even Captain Haddock!
The most popular pet cat name in Britain is Charlie, followed by Oscar, Alfie and Poppy.
In the past we have had a cat named Charlie from a rescue centre.
Is your cat named after a food?

Personally I am not to fond of cats, I am more of a dog person. I have never had a cat, however I have had about 7 or 8 dogs in my life time and I currently have a shitzu named Sasha. As for naming dogs I have never named a dog after a food name.

Funny I just found out this weekend my son is terrified of cats he had an encounter with one in the back yard and he panicked and started screaming I am still trying to figure out why. That definitely means no cats in the house for now.

I used to be scared of cats until we had our cat.
The only reason I can think of why I was scared of cats was because my mum was scared of cats when I was a girl, I suppose I never had any contact with cats because of this and was scared because she was scared of cats!!!

Got loads of names, but I don't think I have any foods...
Got loads of SF show names. 4 from the Tomorrow People: Timus, Elmer, Emily and Elizabeth. Couple from Farscape: Zhaan and Rygel. I have Flower (didn't name her), her sister Blossom and an unrelated Daisy. Flower was named for the skunk in Bambi and Daisy is actually after Granny in the Beverly Hillbillies.
Lets see... Oliver - from Oliver Twist, he was an orphan... Kismet - well, there's a musical by that name too... Sparky was found in a car engine... Star because she was once referred to as a "Siamese colored meteorite" her full name is Shooting Star... noooo, don't think any of them are named after food...

I have not named my cats after food but I did adopt one of them from a shelter and I am so very glad I did! I love the idea of rescuing animals that desperately require homes. My other cat I adopted as an abused stray that showed up on our doorstep. I wish more people would adopt from shelters instead of pets shops or breeders.

Well, I guess if you want to get really technical, one of the cats that we have right now is named after a food because her name is Peaches. She actually was named Geneva at the Humane Society when we got her a year ago, but we didn't feel that name was fitting to her at all and so we changed her name to Peaches.
Our cat that passed away a year ago was definitely named after a food because his name was Cornbread.
In addition to the two cats that have been named after a food, I've also had two dogs in my life that were named after foods as well. First there was Fudge Brownie and then there is Sara Lee (which is a brand of sweet desserts here).

That is a good idea. Once peole name kittens, they are more likely to relate to them, and thus, raise awareness.
I love the Saffron.
Our cats are not named after food. One is called scamper and I dont know how my daughter thought of that name. The other is called Kiwi, and I think she got the name form our vets dog.

hi anne its been a l ong time since I had a cat but she was all black and at midnight she would get in the dark hall lie down on the rug and snooze so unexpectedly we would bump into her on our trips to the bath room so we called her Midnight . we also got a small night light so we cou ld go to the bathroom without danger of stepping into her middle and hurting her. she always got me up in the morning by gettring on my chest and patting my lips with her paw. she never ever scratched me but I sure did wake up then she would look into my eyes and purr. so I would get up stagger to the door and whosh she was in the kitchen underneath the electric can opener awaiting food. smart cat. It broke my heart to h ave to give her to friends as we were moving into an apartment after selling our house.

No, we have never had a cat named after a food. We have had such names as Sabbath, George, Zoey, Crystal, Mother Cat, Grey Boy, Battleship, Coin, Terra, St.Thomas, Colbert, Moe, Tabatha and Maggie Mae. Sometimes it took a while to get the vibe on the name but we all come up with one.

We have Nala , KC & Simba
If we had a Nala we had to name our tom Simba !!
He even has a mane in winter as his fur gets thicker!
Nala & KC are just domestic moggies but Simba is a Tiffany or Tiffinae if you prefer the posher spelling
