Have you checked it?
AAKASH tablet, its really cheap and its a new venture from Indian government.
This introduced by government mainly aiming the graduate students.
Its named as Akash Ubislate, its manufactured in association with UK based company named 'Datawind'.
Its 7" touch screen having Android 2.2 with 2gb internal memory which can be extended upto 32 gb.
Processor: Connexant with Graphics accelerator and HD Video processor.
Also having a 256mb RAM.
its having Wi-Fi,USB ports, GPRS, mobile internet @ 99/month.
It also support, text viewers and text editors, image viewer like doc, docx, pdf etc..
3.5 mm jack, 3hour backup,3g dongle can be plugged in.
And its a phone too!
All these comes in dream price just below 3000/- INR
if the no: of customer is going to increase, government is planning to reduce its price below RS:500.
Disadvantages that i have noticed:
Its having resistive touch screen, but Datawind said that they are planning to make it capacitive.
No details about camera, I dont know whether its having a camera or not?
battery backup seems to be low(3hours).
One more thing is that not much information about processor and its speed.
And I came to know that Telecoms and human resource development minister Kapil Sibal launched the tablet, but dont know when this will be available in market and where to buy it, but there is a option for pre-odering in the website.

Some websites say that it has only 366mhz processor. Also it doesnt have a camera at all.It would have been nice if there was a high end varient of this product with a 2MP camera and a 800mhz processor and increase the price to,say,5000rs. SO that it will be a lot worthier than an ordinary cell phone which they sell for around 5000rs.

but they can launch a commercial version, which are not meant for college students and increase the price slightly to add a camera and a bit faster processor. It is definitely not going to cost much to increase the processor speed for sure.

i haven't actually heard anything about this tablet yet... may be it is because i am not a technology gig person and i don't follow the trend... anyway, i will definitely check it out when it comes to the market in my area... if it is really a good product and worth the money, i might consider getting it for myself... take care and have a nice day...

Hello Venkit,
I read the news in newspaper and very excited on hearing the same. I think the students will carry the PC with them like a mobile phone wherever they go. It is really cheap and small in size so both of this will attract the students.
The disadvantages, that we can find out only after hearing by many users. There may be problems since the gadget is cheap; I hope the disadvantages will be resolved soon.
According to the Minister in India, this is a gift for all students in the world. Let us wait for more feed backs from the users.

They were running a ticker below the news channel I watch on it last night.
The ticker said they were going to be reasonably priced but not sure the quality to the other tablets.
I think it depends on what you want to use it for.
I have a 7 inch netbook. got it for 39.99 from Sylvania. The lady that sold it to me even told me I would not like it. While its naturally slower runs off OS system its perfect to throw in my purse for local coffee shop if I just want to email or work on writing assignments or here on mylot.
it does the basics of a netbook without the size and fits conveniently in my purse.
Guess it depends on what you want the product to do.
I will watch when these come out it may be worth my while as I like the lower tech style stuff not so much to learn as the newer highergrade techie items!
thanks for the extra information,

This one is a great initiative. Let the technology reaches the masses. There should be some tablets like this in the market , then the huge prices of the other tablets will come down . after all its a competitive world. All need to survive. Meanwhile eventhough Govt has released this cheap priced tab, why they have given I PAD to all ministers and MP's ? After they are no ready to compromise like a common man right.

This is really interesting. I am waiting for this tablet to come into the market. If it is already available, I want to by as soon as possible.
The specifications are impressive looking at the price. It would definitely gives a huge competition to the existing expensive tablets.

I am aware of this, but not checked, am afraid many 'real' students will not get it, black marketers will earn as middle man, it happens with all schems of the govenment..
my grandson and granddaughter are students of engg colleges, they said their professor was making a list of students who will buy!!!!
Thanks for sharing
Best of luck.
