I woke up over the weekend anticipating going to church but I did not feel well so I took my blood pressure. The monitor was reading a blood pressure that is way higher than I normally have so I thought maybe the monitor was wrong, but after repeating the study six times with the same result, I woke my husband and told him I needed to go to the emergency room because something was wrong. The doctor came in and said I looked paler than usual so she wanted to run some tests. The lab work came back quickly and before I knew it, I was being admitted to the hospital for a blood transfusion. My hiatal hernia had been bleeding and my hemoglobin level was only at 6.8 which is 6800 and 13000 is normal for a woman my age. I was admitted to the observation unit and had two pints of blood transferred into my body over a period of twelve hours. Now I have to get iron transfusions next week and the following week and my blood has to be monitored for infections and the electrolyte balance. I have been pretty weak so I have been mostly resting since this all happened. I never imagined my anemia would get so bad I would have to have a blood transfusion.

I hope they have set right the root cause of your problem so that your blood count comes to normal without any blood transfusions. I can imagine how frightened you must have been to see your BP readings. Hope you get well soon.

I know of many people who have anemia. They have been able to keep it under control with vitamins and natural healing medicines. It shouldn't become such a dramatic situation, as people with anemia are able to prevent such occurrences. I'm suspecting that too much physical pressure or too much exertion was the cause. Well, thank God you're getting back to normal. Keep us updated!

Oh my Linda this must be terrifying. Thankfully you were aware something was not quite right so you were able to seek treatment right away. I am a terrible Anemic also but have not had this type of issue.
I do hope you begin to feel better and sad that the transfusions are still needed. Take care of yourself.

Sorry to hear you have not been feeling well. I have never heard of an Iron transfusion. I've worked in the medical field for 15 years. I'm not a doctor or a nurse. I was just curious if you meant Iron infusion. Hope you start feeling better soon. Best Wishes!
