When we think of pankakes, we tend to imagine all sorts of syrups, butter and cream over them. They are awesome, but they are a bomb. If there´s a mylotter nutritionist, I wish he/she would enlighten us on the dangers of this treat.
But I´m making fairly often crepes (the thin pankakes) filled with spinach, chard and kale. I make the inside thinly cut, no water and add some milk and spices. I used to put some cream on the spinach, but now I use low fat milk. Over them I put either tomato sauce or white sauce with parmesan cheese. You can make them 2 or 3 days beforehand and put the in the oven to heat. YUMMY!!! Do you make filled crepes or pankakes as a main dish? I imagine that we could fill them with the same filling a taco has. What do you think?

Hi marigucha, I too love pan cakes and in India, we call them Dosas. We have it with either coconut chutney or dhal for breakfast or with chicken, prawn, mutton or fish curry for lunch or dinner .It is also had with potato filling or spiced tomato filling , which is very tasty...There are some restaurants here making several types of dosas , some with spiced egg filling ,mince meat filling etc etc...I like to eat it with honey and ginger jelly as well ...
I have given a link for a recipe for layered pancake...

All the best and happy mylotting

I like pancakes, and I can generally only manage like 2 or 3. Unless I have REAL maple syrup or fresh berries like blue berries, I pretty much just put some butter on them.
I do like crepes, but since I can't make them and also don't know how to make a filling, I just mostly pass on them...

I was talking about crepes with a spinach creme or a mushroom sauce inside. They are easy to make if you have a teflon pan. You can get a recipe for pancakes on the web. Ax I have kale in my garden, I make kale cream with parmesan cheese and place it in the crepes and roll them. Over it, some tomato sauce and it´s a dish fit for a King

I'd love to try them the way you are making them. But I would think of course they'd taste better when they are much more sinful with fruit, syrup ect on them. If it makes you feel any better you can use a lite syrup and some batters are also available in a lighter version as well.

I make crepes (the thin version). Then I make a cram that can be done with anything you like: mushrooms, spinach, artichokes, you name it. I put some over the crepes and roll them. Now that I have kale for free in my garden I make them at least once a week. Sometimes, to make them different, I use a whole crepe, cream, crepe, cream until of a good size. I top it with either white sauce or a tomato sauce. YUMMY!!!

In our household we actually make breakfast for dinner on a pretty regular basis. Just last week, we had biscuits and gravy for dinner because it was something that sounded really good and all of the things that I needed to make the meal were on sale.
I don't typically do pancakes though because they really aren't one of my favorite things. When I do have pancakes, however, I prefer for them to be on the sweet side as opposed to the savory side.

I like both kinds as different ways of eating something that alone is just flour, an egg and some milk. The filling changes everything and, just like mexican tortillas, you can fill them with anything you wnt to, as it´s an equivalent of bread.

hi friend, I could live on just about anything as staple food especially if it's a healthy alternative like your delicious creation but I'm not sure if I could speak for the 90+% Filipinos who can't seem to survive or feel a lack if they don't get to eat rice, it's always rice, rice and more rice for them, all the rest are snacks or "merienda"(afternoon snack or meal)for them, perhaps it has something to do with what they have been used to

I have never been in a country where rice is the staple food so I cannot even imagine what is to have rice for breakfast instead of wheat bread. Merienda is a word in Spanish, so I understood it perfectly well. Of course our meal have to do a lot with our costums, except for Mac Donalds (my most hated food).

It's not just in our country friend but it's the rest of Southeast Asia and large parts of Asia where rice is a staple. I've been wondering that too, people here can survive with rice and just dried fish or fish paste, boiled vegetable or coconut milk. Some people even eat just rice, adobo oil and salt. I'm glad that I have adopted to eat anything and healthier food besides rice as staple and teach my children to be like me but some people, even members of my family will settle for nothing less than rice. Our local Jollibee here beats Mac Donalds in terms of patronage, both serve rice too or else they will both lose sales

Pancakes are often eaten as the main meal, especially in families with children. It is also customary that the father makes them (I live in the Netherlands). Dutch pancakes are thicker than crepes and larger. When I make them I use the largest frying pan I have.
Although traditional pancakes are made of white flour, I use all kind of flour - wholemeal, rye and often add oatmeal.
I like sweet but also savoury pancakes. My two favourites are: with bacon and black treacle, or lemon juice and sugar

Thanks for sharing one of your country´s dishes. In my country, not many men would have a try at making pancakes akthough my daughter´s partner is a pancake maker. But (I have never told him) the ones we do at my home re much better.

i'm not really a big fan of pancakes or crepes... but i do eat them every now and then and i have to agree with you that they are DELICIOUS... very YUMMY... :-) i usually prefer the salty crepes (with eggs, cheese, ham and bacons) compare to the sweet ones... :-) take care and have a nice day...

I don´t like to eat anything on a daily basis. Not even the food I like best. But I do like pancakes, crepes, waffles and I made very good meals with them when it is the turn to the salty crepes.

Well, they must be yummy - one friend of mine used to fill them with something salty, veggies and other things. Could be used for main dish.
If I make pankakes, I will fry them in coconut oil, as the other oils should not be heated..maybe one other exception, almond oil.
Pankakes are still a mixture of carbs and proteins, so I would not eat them often. They could be great at family get togethers and I guess kids would like them..

Unless you are on a strict diet, pankakes (the thin ones) don´t have too much carbohidrates. And if the filling is made of veggies it might even be a nice way to have children eat vegetables instead of pasta or rice.

I think pancakes are pretty good. I usually eat them with out any syrup. I enjoy them if there is a little crunchy golden brown crisp around the edges, I also add a dash of vanilla extract and sometimes a pinch of brown sugar. That makes them melt in your mouth!! That is the best! and no syrup required. My children on the other hand saturate them in syrup. But I think its not that bad since they dont have them every night. And I try to add some fresh fruit as a side along with this. The boy scouts even prepare a pancake supper a few times a year for people in the community to come out and support them. I might just have to make pancakes for supper tomorrow!

Try the salt ones in your family sometime. It can be a good way of eating veggies. And now that you speak about fruit, maybe the pancakes can be filled with diced fruit and have some brown sugar on top.

I remember my mom used to make a simple pancake using only water and flour and a little bit of salt added to the mixture. She'll make a dozen or more every morning for our breakfast. We either add honey or sweetened condensed milk to go with the pancakes. I have brought over the recipe to my own family but with little modifications like using milk instead of water and adding eggs to the mixture. Sometimes I add in dried prawns and chives with a dash of pepper just for a change. Pancakes are quite filling and and easy to make compared to having rice and various dishes to prepare for dinner or lunch.

Chives add a zest to almost any meal. I have chives in my garden so I will add them to pancakes as a main dish. When I was little, pancakes were often filled with condensed milk at home. Condensed milk still brings back childhood for me.

I love pancakes and would eat them anytime of the day. I can do this now being that the kiddies are no longer at home.
Although I am far from a nutritionist, maybe too much of the sweet syrup can be bad for us. As long as we eat them with moderation I think we can be safe with it, unless someone is diabetic I suppose it can be harmful.
I have not eaten them with anything other then syrup and butter, but I like your spinach idea and you can be sure I will be trying something different now as you know me I love to experiment and have become more courageous about experimenting with food since I have met you here.
I am wondering if I make the pancakes really thin, then yes filling them with meats and cilantro will make for a wonderful main dish. MMM marguicha yet more to experiment with.

Pankakes can be a real treat as a main dish. I also make a sort of omelette in layers, playing one pankake and a layer of filling. On top, you put white sauce or tomato sauce and parmesan cheese if you like. Them you can cut it as you would a cake.

WOW! I love pancakes. And you spelled pancakes wrong too or did you do it on purpose? That's weird. I love them though, I eat them with honey syrup on it and it goes nice with tapaz. I love it with peanut butter too. Yummy! Tapaz....mmmmm! I feel hungry again with this discussion i bet I'm gonna have some of it then.

I spelled them wrong because English is not my native languageAlthough I think that I write well enough for a Spanish speaker, I always have some problems, specially with words that are similar to Spanish. We say panqueques.
I don´t like much peanut butter (it´s not in our culture either), but I love them with jams or with dulce de leche (a sweetened milk that you boil until dark).

I love pancakes too! who doesn't like pancakes? I actually have never tried stuffing pancakes with other types of food like mushrooms or vegetables, I have never thought about it. Every time I feel like pancakes, I just think of nice sweet syrup, chocolate and cream, you know all the sweet stuff. I might actually become a little more creative and try adding other stuff on the pancakes and make some crepes. I usually have pancakes for breakfast or dessert because I have always considered it as something sweet for the mouth. I might actually try having some pancakes as a main meal. Who knew you could eat pancakes with practically anything?

I´m so very glad I started this post! I wanted to share some pancakes as main dish I make but I have learned a lot. Those mushroom pancakes sound out of this world! As for pancakes for dessert, my favorite are Crepes Suzette although they are diffucult to make and I do them just for special company once in a big while.

But looking at your idea it could work quite well, maybe trying different combinations could be really nice! awesome idea!

Just like you I love pancakes/ jack flaps/ crepes whatever you might call it. It will depend on what mixture you will add to it that makes it bad for your nutrition but I do believe that once in a while it is nice to eat one without thinking about the calories that you will get from two pancakes ( 1 is simply not enough for me). I use maple syrup and margarine in mind. Accompanied with bacon or ham it is simply divine even if the nutritionist will say its unhealthy.
