What a morning!

My son is a power chair. Our ramp was built by crippled children of our county. Last year, I put in a paper for them to come service it, as the nails were rusting and the ramp was falling apart. I have had no replies. I have called, no return calls. The woman I need to talk with, has never returned calls. It is so ridiculous. Anyway, this morning, the platform on the ramp broke with my son on it. It is 3 foot in the air and just dropped about 6 inches with the front wheels of my sons wheelchair. The front of the wheelchair was just dangling and we could not get it back up on the other part. I ended up getting the bus driver to come help me. We also live next to a small store and their happened to be a delivery driver there, which is unusual at 6:30 in the morning. He also came to help, thank goodness. We did get him back to safety, thank goodness. I am so grateful for all that came to help. The only other thing that I could think of doing was calling the fire department and having them come to help. I just cannot lift a 350 lb. wheelchair plus the weight of my son. I sure hope the rest of the day goes better. When they built the ramp, years ago, I was told that they would come fix anything that needed fixed. I have tried for over a year to get them to come. The plate on the side of the ramp says that it is owned by the agency. If they are not going to fix it, they should call and give us permission to do so, and let us take their name off, as the way it is right now, is if we do not need it any longer,it is theirs to come and get. We have done repairs that need done, thinking we are keeping my son safe. It needs an overhaul, as it is just worn out. We don't have the money to build another. We checked into it and it will cost over $800. I am not sure what we are going to do. I am just so glad that my son did not get hurt!! Have you ever gotten into a mess where you were not sure what to do to get out of it?

This is rediculous! And so stressful and frustrating. It makes you feel like you are between a rock and a hard place with no recource. I hope you get something figured out.

The thing is they are an organization. I think I am going to find someone to just replace it, instead of trying to keep after them to fix it. No one wants to touch it because it belongs to them and not me.

This is very unfair. for you to put in a paper over a year ago, and no one has come to fix it, let alone ring. Can you report this agency to an authority? It sound sto me like they are under an obligation to fix it? In Australia, we have the Ombudsonman to report such things to. Thank goodness those mind people came to help you and your son. He does not deserve to put up with this. Is there any other voluntary community service that would help you?

I don't know your area and what your community is like, big or small. But something similar like that (without someone actually being on it) happened, and no one would come fix it depsite promises. So the people went to the local news, and each news station has a "in your corner" kind of thing. They did a spot on it on the local news, and while the original people did not fix it, people came forward to pay and fix it for the people themselves.

I am glad you and your son were not hurt. I did have difficulty with a wheelchair ramp when I was transporting my late husband and the chair slid off the ramp. I was standing there trying to hold him and the wheelchair up and a pickup truck drove by with some big guys and they came to a screeching halt and jumped out and rescued us. Yayyy! I could not have held on much longer.

If the organization that installed the ramp for you has a local and a national branch, then the first thing that I would do would be to call the national branch of the organization and let them know what is going on. If that doesn't work for you, then I would check into other community service organizations in your area that might be able to help you with this. I'm sure that there will be someone that will be able to help you with an overhaul of the ramp.

God was surely looking out for your son! I'm so glad he's okay. Call the Better Business Bureau and file a complaint. That usually gets the attention of the business that's acting like jerks. Also put in a call to your local center for disability and ask them if they can get in touch with the ramp people. It is dangerous and your local health department may be able to help with that, too. Keep making calls but do file a complaint with the BBB, I'm sure that will get some action. It did when I was having trouble, resolved my problem within 48 hours after I'd called for weeks with no results!
