Vitamin is risky for aged women

Most of us have a general idea that to take vitamin is good for health. But the researchers found a reverse fact. They claim if aged women take more vitamins their risk of death increases. Vitamin may be useful for those who are suffering from malnutrition. But to take excessive vitamin may be dangerous. It is found that having sufficient nutrition many women of fifties and sixties take the decision to have vitamin tablets. Study says, specially multivitamins, folic acid, vitamin B6, magnesium, zinc, copper, and iron increase the risk of death. The study was made by Dr. Jako Moors and his associates of the University of Eastern Finland.

I heard that too...Nevertheless, i feel tired when i heard for another research which scientist found exactly the opposite result than the previous "in subject" research....I dont know which to follow and make people anxiety for the basic things bigger and bigger.....

billant8 I really agree with you and I was reading hoping to find someone saying that. Every few years or so there will be research giving results that conflict with previous - and future - researches. Not sure how "trust-able" that makes any research made :) Basically you can you can prove anything you want with any kind of research. You can do it on purpose or not, but this is true. Depending in which direction you take your research, people studied, and research parameters, you can find basis to prove or disprove almost any theory. WHich might just render any research....well shall we say garbage? LOL Just kidding, there are positive aspects to research of course, but it should be taken with a grain of salt as opposed to believed as the whole truth.

I never know what to do, one study says yes and another says no. How do you decied? I take what makes me feel good and if I am not feeling good I stop everything and then slowly add it back.

Really it is a problem. The researchers make us confused.

I do the same, Pat! I go with how my body feels all the time now!

That sounds strange, although the concept is kind of logical. The B vitamins are water soluble, so the body gets rid of whatever it doesn't use. It's possible that some women have a problem getting rid of the excess or if they take too much. There are supplements made especially for older women that have lower levels of minerals and vitamins that are not needed as much. Older women especially shouldn't be taking iron supplements, as iron builds up in the body. A woman's doctor should tell her that. I'd like to read more about this. Do you have a link?

Yes it is preferable to take advice of doctors. I got it from a newspaper. I have no other link.

That is only true if they take the wrong vitamins or the wrong amount. Also, they should take only natural, and not synthetic vitamins. If a person goes to a natural doctor, they can help discover what is good to take and what is not needed.

Hi nanajanet, yes it is advisable to consult with a natural doctor. There must be a difference between synthetic and natural.

I have heard boths sides of that discussion..some people say a "vitamin is a vitamin" there us no dfference in natural and synthetic because the make up is the same..so I am always confused about this...

This ia an alarming news as my mom takes multivitamins prescribed by her doctor. Do you mean, aged women should refrain from taking vitamins and instead eat natural food? So supplemental is wrong? My mom digestion is not that good anymore and to supplement her with nutrition ,she takes multivitamins. I think will so many products coming out, there are also so many studies disclaiming these and that! I think it's up to us which one is to believe.

I also agree it is nice to take vitamins from natural food. Just wondering where can we find the food that can get us those vitamins and is not tainted with fertilizers, "modifiers", "prettyfiers" "huge-ifiers" and such. ALso for a true deficiency sometimes the vitamins in food will not be enough unless the person will be eating that specific food by the bushel. And then we need to take in account the trends in nutrition and even availability.... complicated to make decisions nowadays even without reading new research :)

I totally agree with you - it seems that as soon as one study comes out, another says the complete opposite! Personally, I believe that the best way to get your required nutrition is through food. However, I also believe that this is extremely difficult to do! If you're really worried, then I might suggest going to see a nutritionist who can help your mom balance her diet without vitamins. If her digestion is a hindrance though, the vitamin might be the only way she can get the nutrition she needs. Health is always about pros and cons. Everything has a drawback, the question is what we should do after comparing those drawbacks.

Never take vitamins if it isn't prescribed by your doctor. It's the doctor who knows what deficient vitamins you need after he has diagnosed what you are feeling and after some laboratory tests to support it.

unless the doctor has been "bombarded" with pharm reps doing their thing, or been to this or that seminar/symposium/etc which is as a rule funded by this and that pharmaceutical company, and then, even that prescription should be taken with a grain of salt. When your notepad - let's keep it at notepad only - keeps reminding you the name of a certain brand of vitamins - keep it at vitamins because it's what's being discussed here - there's a probability that you will remember to prescribe that proportional to the times you look at your notepad :) I know, I'm sounding cynical. I apologize but with age comes.... not answers to questions but more questions LOL

Everything with balance and common sense always, is better than any research and counter-research. Commons sense will tell us that too much of anything - even a good thing - is not necessarily healthy. Trying to achieve a balance between what we eat to maximize out intake of natural vitamins coming from food, will come with the common sense as well. I"m not a big fan of taking vitamins or any medication for that matter without knowing exactly why I need it and in which way will it help me - as well as what are the side effects and all the cons that come associated with taking it. Taking excessive vitamins, is not necessarily making a good thing better, and as you say it might actually make it worse. Yet that doesn't mean that people should from now on, stop taking all vitamins - which is what often happens after any kind of new research comes up. People read, don't think, and act. Some people do need to take vitamins - but not all , and certainly not in excess. Moderation is the key word. On the other hand, getting our vitamins from natural foods - which is the best idea of all - is sometimes complicated. Certain vitamins are in such small concentration that even if the person only eats that food it will still not be enough if they are deficient on that specific one. More than that, it is complicated to really know what quantity of vitamin we are taking given the fact that foods are altered , cooked, pasteurized, emulsified, pureed, powdered etc. etc. And even when they're not, they've gone come form so far that half of the good stuff is lost by the time they reach our table. Ok so I might be exaggerating a bit, but just to give the idea:) Am I trying to discredit this new research? Not at all, I think all research serves a purpose which is to make us think about something, but not to follow it blindly. Ideally most people wouldn't need to take vitamin supplements, but it sounded good when the fad started, because it was generating money - yeah it always comes to that, and we know where the money ends up too LOL Dr. Jack Moors seems to be concluding the obvious: excessive vitamins might not be good to your health. Duh! Shouldn't we know that? Then he adds "specially to older women" that makes sense too because the key word is not vitamins, it is "excessive". I know, I talk too much.... I'll stop here :) Good topic by the way

Hi arkaf, you are right. It is better to take vitamins from natural food. But we can't abruptly avoid all vitamins made by the pharmaceuticals companies. Many people lack some vitamins which are necessary for their health. In that case they can take synthetic vitamins which they need.

I don't think you can get all of the vitamins you need from food anymore. Some people don't eat right to begin with. I have heard that too much of a certain vitamin can do more harm than good but withink reason I think they are good for you.

Like everything else, I say moderation in all things. I agree the mega doses of vitamins to try to cure things can be harmful if one doesn't know what they are doing..but moderate amounts of vitamins are ok in my opinion..

A recent study has shown that individuals who takes vitamins, except calcium, may be at risk of shortening their lifespan. Iron is stated as being the worst of all vitamin supplements taken that reduce one's lifespan. It is much better to obtain your daily intake of vitamins by food sources as oppoed to synthetic supplemts.

Hello Dear Bhanusb! You are right! The vitamins are catalytic agents and they are required to perform some important functions by the body with the help of other chemicals in the body! Normally these things are provided in the food what we consume on daily basis! A normally balanced diet provides almost all vitamins in required amount! In case of a particular deficiency, the supplementation of the vitamins can be helpful! But just taking vitamins on routine basis without having any deficiency can lead to hypervitaminosis which can be detrimental to the life! So in my opinion one should have vitamins only under the strict supervision of the doctors! Thanks !

It's interesting. Can you please explain why?Maybe Iron will not be necessary if a woman will be in a menopausal stage, because she is not at risk of Iron deficiency anemia anymore, and iron build-up can be toxic. What about the other vitamins?

If you eat healthy food and a large variety of foods, no one needs to take extra vitamin. Vitamin tablets are an invention of the pharmaceutical industry. Their aim is to make money.
